2 Remembering the In 1961 Keith Royer, Executive Officer of the Fire Service Institute at Iowa State University, was elected the first president of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI). His election sparked interest in forming an Iowa Chapter of the ISFSI. In 1963 Fire Instructors from around Iowa came together at a conference to discuss forming a chapter; and at the Instructors Conference on April 21-24, 1964, the Iowa Society of Fire Service Instructors was formed. Floyd Bill Nelson wrote the Constitution and By-Laws that were adopted at that conference, and soon after, the ISFSI accepted and recognized the Iowa Society of Fire Service Instructors as Chapter 2 of the ISFSI. Dues for the Society were set at $2, and the first membership cards were sent out in The Iowa Society was actually the first chapter to be recognized and remains the longest continuously affiliated Chapter of the ISFSI. 1

6 FRIDAY November 14, 2014 Crew Resource Management in Training: This Safety Tool is Working in Iowa! Presented by Jerry Holt, Fire Chief, Urbandale Fire Department; and FSTB Field Instructor New recruits, experienced firefighters and Chief Officers will be able to identify the concepts of crew resource management and learn how to apply CRM to improve firefighter safety. Sometimes the expert is wrong and someone has to be a barrier preventing actions from resulting in injury/accidents. Hear of the success of CRM right here in Iowa! Training the Next Generation Presented by Jerry Presta, Firefighter, East Norwich (NY) Fire Company; representing the National Volunteer Fire Council This workshop was developed to enhance the skill set of the fire department administration and junior firefighter program advisors in the leadership and management of their junior fire fighter program. The workshop provides information in the specific areas of leading junior firefighter programs safely and proficiently, including management, understanding standards and regulations, and meeting the potential challenges specific to junior firefighters. This workshop is sponsored by a grant through the National Volunteer Fire Council Using the USNG as a Language of Location (Train-the-Trainer) Presented by Rob Inouye, Captain, Cedar Falls Fire Department; and FSTB Field Instructor Where the heck am I? or Where are they? Thirty-three percent of all incident calls nationally happen in areas with no addresses. Whether a search for a missing 8 year old camper or a major Wide Area Search after a tornado; the challenge for first responders is to quickly and clearly communicate using a common language of location for situational awareness and search and rescue. The United States National Grid (USNG) is the required standard mapping system adopted by FEMA and the National Search and Rescue Committee for geo-referencing. Participants will be introduced to the USNG and how to use it in events ranging from routine incident calls to catastrophic natural or manmade disasters. Participants will be provided with instructional materials so they can teach this back home. 5

Fire Service Training Bureau Update Hear the latest update from Randy Novak, Bureau Chief, Fire Service Training Bureau, and find out about several new training programs, including the National Traffic Incident Management Responder Training Program and the National Fire Academy s Managing Officer Program. Customized Video Based Training Made Easy Presented by Scott Meinecke As an instructor you are met with many challenges. Some of these are different learning styles, generational issues, work schedules, etc. Much like the changing role of our fire departments themselves, you are asked to be everything to everybody. This presentation will help you identify different methods to deliver customized training. You will leave with the ability to set up your own video based on demand system with YouTube and quick reference QR codes. This sounds hard but it really isn t and once you have done it, you will be amazed with the results. 6

Chief Billy Goldfeder is Deputy Fire Chief, Loveland-Symmes (OH) Fire Department; Associate/Contributing Editor for Fire Enginneering, Fire-Rescue, Firehouse.com, monthly columnist: Firehouse Magazine s Close Calls and co-host of Chief Billy Goldfeder will present through video, audio and WAKE UP lecture, an in-depth program featuring specific and very recent fireground events with a strong focus on DWELLING FIRES that end with tragic results. The program focuses specifically on the LESSONS LEARNED so that these incidents (and those involved) don t ever become forgotten. This very personal, high energy direct and frank operation and tactics program is presented, providing the attendees an excellent opportunity to apply the LESSONS LEARNED to their own departments and themselves, when returning home...potentially avoiding history tragically repeating itself. The goal of the program is to have the Firefighters and Officers leave more knowledgeable, educated and informed but most importantly THINKING HARD about their role, their SIZE UP responsibilities before, on arrival and while operating at FIRE and RESCUE operations: to themselves and their families. These factual LESSONS LEARNED and related CASE STUDIES will help insure that history is not repeated...and your department. NOT EVERYONE GOES HOME. Some firefighters do and some don t this seminar will help you understand HOW AND WHY. 8
