Commit yourself - Those who succeed set themselves apart by their commitment. Most of us make an effort: we prepare; we try; but then we hope. If you really want to achieve something, you must be prepared to stretch yourself. You must distil your energy and focus all your efforts. You must give of yourself. if you re not actively involved in getting what you want, you don t really want it Peter McWilliams. Dendrobium Speciosum - The Sydney Rock Orchid Dendrobium speciosum is one of the world's most underrated and exciting of orchids. They are capable of producing possibly the largest display plants and most spectacular shows of mass blooming of any known orchid. Extraordinarily tough, hardy and drought tolerant it should be one of the most cultivated plants ever! It can tolerate near frost to temperatures over 45 c without severe damage. This orchid is native to a vast section of Australia ranging from Mallacoota (37 33'S) in South-East 5

6 Victoria to the tropical conditions up past Cairns (16 57 S). Because it is found over such a vast region, botanists have broken the species apart into many subspecies or varieties. It seems every few years they change names again, so we will mainly use the oldest and most accepted names in this guide. Growing under harsh dry and bright Australian conditions it is the perfect orchid for garden planting in tubs or even half wine barrels. Anywhere worldwide that has similar conditions to south-eastern Australia will be able to grow this orchid with ease. Dendrobium speciosum is particularly suited for growing in southern Italy, Greece, Portugal, Spain, southern France, and California USA. This is an orchid that thrives on low-medium humidity, bright to very bright light and an open well drained pot with orchid compost. In almost every occasion I have seen this orchid in the wild, it is growing on granite cliff faces or boulders in open grassy paddocks. They are huge growers, so in time they may require a giant tub or preferment position in the garden. Very bright, open, breezy positions seem to be the key to mass blooming. Speciosums can be acclimatised to take 100% fullsun if slowly positioned into brighter and brighter light from late winter onwards. It is in these full sun positions that they will bloom annually without fail. A constantly moist root system is also important, as in natural cliff faces they live on weep moisture constantly. The speciosum's root systems are always covered with a blanket of moist ferns and mosses. Certain African introduced weeds also grow along with speciosums. A good indicator plant is Plectranthus sp. Wherever this grows, speciosum will too! Growing dendrobium speciosum is simple. Avoid frosts, unaccustomed hot sun, too much shade (make sure you can see a shadow when placing hand above foliage) and temperatures above 36c if possible. The orchid trade in Australia has sold speciosum for over 30 years, and much work has been done hybridising many different colour forms and shapes, using the various sub species from up and down the east coast. The most desirable hybrid line bred speciosum is one with intense rich golden yellow colour but not to large in the canes or pseudobulbs. The far Southern form known as dendrobium speciosum var. speciosum is the easiest to grow (and most tolerant of abuse). The deepest colour forms are unusual variants of speciosum var. grandiflorum, these may be rich golden yellow, and sometimes in full sun almost a golden orange. This colour form is extremely rare and known from only a very few parents such as "Kroombit Tops" "Mt Larcom Gold" and "Beranghi Gold". Do not expect the deepest colour forms to come easily or cheaply. Generally a good rich daffodil yellow is to be expected. In nature most clones are a pale lemon or yellow/cream in colour, very rarely are true clear whites seen. These are the rarest colour form. Look for the parent "National White" when trying to obtain a white flowering form. One of the rarest natural forms 'Boreale" from Nth Queensland tends also to be clear white. The shortest caned forms are the pedunculatum forms from furthest north Queensland. They may have fully mature blooming sized canes at only 3" tall! When bred with the largest caned grandiflorums, it is possible to obtain deep colours but on relatively tiny canes (bonsai)! For cultivation avoid the hillii variety as this produces clawed tiny blooms in pale creams. Also it produces giant canes with disproportionately tiny blooms. Many of these are exported as grandiflorums, so buyers beware. Speciosum are often sold in 50mm tubes with plants that are 18 months to two years ex vitro. These are 3" tall and will take about 6 years to bloom. An 80mm size is about 3 years old and about 4-5 years from blooming, 100mm advanced size is about 3-4 years out of the bottle and about 2-3 years from blooming. Pots should always have excellent drainage and not be too large in comparison to the orchid. As they are vigorous growers, re pot annually. The compost should be open well drained and have about 25% rock present. Feeding can be done with Peters Excel Hi K 5 grams (1 teaspoon) per 10 litres. They are virtually free of pests, as their foliage is like heavy gauge plastic (but may occasionally get scale insect). Dockrillia Orchids Fact Sheet With around 30 species identified Dockrillias are an orchid with succulent leaves. They are found in Australia however the genus is also represented in New Guinea, Fiji and nearby areas. Sometimes called Rock Orchids as they are commonly found growing rocks, the root systems find their way into cracks and crevices and through the general debris that collects in such situations. In culture they are mainly grown in hanging baskets. Dockrillia Orchids are an orchid genus only recently given its own status. Originally a part of the Dendrobium group Dockrillia are ephiphytic or lithophytic orchid are native to Australia and New Guinea through the South Pacific to Tahiti, a widely spread and varied genus. Whats the difference between Dockrillias and Dendrobiums? The question is asked why were the Dockrillias only recently separated into a specific genus? 6

7 This has mainly to do with the terete leaved structure, a cylindrical leaf, like a rats tail. They also lack the pseudo bulb of the dendrobium. In terms of species D. striolata is probably the most commonly grown, also called the pencil orchid just another way of describing the leaf structure. This is a sub tropical species from Northern Australia. From the other extreme we have Dockrillia striolata subsp striolata, from Tasmania. Dockrillia species include : D. nugentii Found in Queensland, epiphytic with white to cream flowers. D. striolata One of the easiest to grow, streaked petals and commonly called the Streaked Rock Orchid. D. rigida Very attractive tropical species, flowers vary from a creamy yellow to white with pink to crimson sometimes on the reverse. D. mortii A very rare species in cultivation and in the wild, one of the most delicate of the genus. D. bowmanii Pale lime green flowers with a white labellum. D. schoenina Cream petals with some magenta striping. Dockrillia Orchids Care As we can see from the distribution different Dockrillia species will require different care, humidity and heat are the main factors to consider. Most Dockrillia species are epiphytic, growing naturally on trees such as the Hoop Pine, in cultivation backing boards are used, tree fern and cork being widely used for mounting. The flowering period for most species is best described as sporadic. They can flower at just about any time of the year, spring is fairly common, however other seasons are not uncommon. Dockrillia linguiformis ( Previously known as Dendrobium linguiforme Tongue Orchid Dockrillia linguiformis (Sw.) Brieger (1981) Dockrillia linguiformis, commonly known as the Tongue Orchid, is a hardy orchid, naturally occurring from North Eastern Queensland to South Eastern New South Wales. It grows both epiphytically, on trees, and lithophytically, on rock faces or crevices. This plant is incredibly easy to cultivate, and will tolerate a wide range of conditions. Flowers are cream, white or occasionally yellow, with a slightly spidery form, and are produced on inflorescences usually in September and October. An inflorescence can support up to 20 flowers. The leaves are thick and leathery, smooth on the bottom, with several parallel grooves running along the upper surface. The leaves are usually around 2 4 x cm in size, and are produced alternately from the creeping rhizome. Within the normal distribution of the plant, it can simply be mounted on a cork slab, tree or rock, and left in a fairly open location, with good air circulation. In fact, the creeping form of the plant makes pot culture almost impossible. In general, the slab should be firm and solid, as the plant doesn t seem to grow strongly on softer substrates such as tree-fern slabs. While the plant is very tolerant of exposure to sun, high temperatures and low water, it should be sheltered to some extent from frost in cooler areas, either against a wall, or in a sheltered but sunny bush house. In colder areas, glasshouse cultivation may be necessary. Light daily watering in the morning should be sufficient during the spring and summer, although particularly hot days may merit a second watering, particularly if the leaves start to shrivel and discolour. In the cooler months, watering can be relaxed and less frequent. A slightly drier winter can often improve flowering in the spring. As with many native orchids, overwatering is a common mistake. Fertilizer shouldn t be necessary, as the plant, like many epiphytic orchids, normally grows in relatively low nutrient environments. However, small doses of orchid food on a fortnightly or weekly basis may be beneficial in early spring to summer, if heavy flowering is desired. Propagation for this species is very easy. While growing from seed is very difficult, and usually requires sterile conditions, the creeping form of the orchid makes propagation by cuttings simple. If a short section, with roots and at least four leaves is cut off from the parent plant, and placed on a new slab, it should flourish. Cuttings are best taken in late winter, as new roots will grow in spring, and anchor the plant to its new substrate. As with all orchids, this species is protected by law and should not be collected from the wild. However, it is usually available from orchid nurseries. A very similar species is Dockrillia nugentii, which has broader flowers and occurs in northern Queensland. Text by Richard Brackin (2006 Student Botanical Intern) 7
