1 City of Highland Weekly Report December 29, 2016 The Highland Improvement Team is currently looking to schedule residential yard clean-up projects for the New Year! There are no income eligibility requirements and absolutely no charge to the homeowner. A fabulous team of volunteers completes all work and repair at Highland Improvement Team projects. Here are a few of the tasks that our volunteers can assist you with: MOWING LAWN WEEDING TRIM SHRUBS PLANTING TRIM SMALL TREES We are searching for Highland homeowners who need help with yard cleanup and minor landscaping. The Highland Improvement Team schedules one cleanup project each month. The project must require enough work to fill the allotted four-hour period, usually from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Simply place your Christmas tree at the curb by 6:00am on your regular collection day during the week of December 26, January 6, Trees over 6ft must be cut in half Please remove all tinsel, ornaments, plastic, bags, stands, braces, wire and nails No artificial trees will be accepted For more information, please contact Burrtec Waste Industries, Inc. at (909) What You Should Know About Street Sweeping in Highland 1) Help us to serve you better by removing all possible obstacles from the street on your scheduled day. Although the City of Highland does not enforce street sweeping parking restrictions, we appreciate your assistance in keeping the streets clear on your scheduled day. Parked vehicles cause the operator to swing wide to miss them. Moving vehicles off a street scheduled for sweeping allows crews to thoroughly clean the street from curb-to-curb. One parked car equals nearly three car lengths of space that can t be swept because the street sweeping equipment must leave room to avoid it. This can result in debris building up on the roadway and entering the storm drain which can cause flooding during heavy rains and contribute to water pollution. 2) In residential areas the street sweeper can sweep anytime from 7am to 5pm, the day after your solid waste collection day. 3) If solid waste collection is delayed one day due to a holiday, the street sweeper will be delayed one day as well. There is NO holiday delay this year. 4) Since sweeping is done as close to the curb as possible, things like overhanging tree branches, basketball hoops, solid waste collection carts and especially 5) Street sweeping also serves as one of our Best Management Practices (BMP) to control and improve water quality. 5 P a g e 5 Administration Emergency Preparedness - Earthquakes One of the most frightening and destructive phenomena of nature is a severe earthquake and its terrible after effects. An earthquake is the sudden, rapid shaking of the earth, caused by the breaking and shifting of subterranean rock as it releases strain that has accumulated over a long time. For hundreds of millions of years, the forces of plate tectonics have shaped the earth, as the huge plates that form the earth s surface slowly move over, under and past each other. Sometimes, the movement is gradual. At other times, the plates are locked together, unable to release accumulated energy. When the accumulated energy grows strong enough, the plates break free. If the earthquake occurs in a populated area, it may cause many deaths and injuries and extensive property damage. The 2011 East Coast earthquake illustrated the fact that it is impossible to predict when or where an earthquake will occur, so it is important that you and your family are prepared ahead of time. The following are things you can do to protect yourself, your family and your property in the event of an earthquake. To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communication plan Fasten shelves securely to walls. Place large or heavy objects on lower shelves. Store breakable items such as bottled foods, glass, and china in low, closed cabinets with latches. Fasten heavy items such as pictures and mirrors securely to walls and away from beds, couches and anywhere people sit. Brace overhead light fixtures and top heavy objects. Repair defective electrical wiring and leaky gas connections. These are potential fire risks. Get appropriate professional help. Do not work with gas or electrical lines yourself. Install flexible pipe fittings to avoid gas or water leaks. Flexible fittings are more resistant to breakage. Secure your water heater, refrigerator, furnace and gas appliances by strapping them to the wall studs and bolting to the floor. If recommended by your gas company, have an automatic gas shut-off valve installed that is triggered by strong vibrations. Repair any deep cracks in ceilings or foundations. Get expert advice if there are signs of structural defects. Be sure the residence is firmly anchored to its foundation. Store weed killers, pesticides, and flammable products securely in closed cabinets with latches and on bottom shelves. Locate safe spots in each room under a sturdy table or against an inside wall.
