P lease visit the City of Highland Public Services Division booth during Discover Highland Night on Saturday, October 22, 2016, between 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Lowe s parking lot (27847 Greenspot Rd). This will be a great opportunity to ask City staff any questions you may have regarding solid waste services, recycling, street sweeping and stormwater pollution prevention. A representative from the San Bernardino County Fire Department s Household Hazardous Waste program will be on hand to answer your household hazardous waste questions and concerns. For those of you Do-It-Yourself mechanics, we will be giving away FREE used oil drain pans, filter buckets and creepers. For those of you who have home generated sharps, we will have FREE approved sharps container and information on proper disposal. Feel free to stop by and see us. 2 P a g e 2 National Prescription Drug Take Back Day O n October 22nd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Highland Police Station and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 11th opportunity in six years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Americans turned in more unused prescription drugs at the most recent DEA National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day than on any of the previous 10 events since it began in 2010, demonstrating their understanding of the value of this service. Bring your medications for disposal to the Highland Police Station located at Base Line Highland, CA The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Earlier this year the DEA and over 4,200 of its state, local, and tribal law enforcement partners collected 893,498 pounds of unwanted medicines about 447 tons at almost 5,400 sites spread through all 50 states, beating its previous high of 390 tons in the spring of 2014 by 57 tons, or more than 114,000 pounds. The top five states with the largest collections, in order, were Texas (almost 40 tons); California (32 tons); Wisconsin (31 tons); Illinois (24 tons); and Massachusetts (24 tons). The majority of prescription drug abusers report in surveys that they get their drugs from friends and family. Americans understand that cleaning out old prescription drugs from medicine cabinets, kitchen drawers, and bedside tables reduces accidents, thefts, and the misuse and abuse of these medicines, including the opioid painkillers that accounted for 20,808 drug overdoses 78 a day in 2014 (the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Eight out of 10 new heroin users began by abusing prescription painkillers and moved to heroin when they could no longer obtain or afford those painkillers. These results show that more Americans than ever are taking the important step of cleaning out their medicine cabinets and making homes safe from potential prescription drug abuse or theft, said DEA Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg. Unwanted, expired or unused prescription medications are often an unintended catalyst for addiction. Take-Back events like these raise awareness of the opioid epidemic and offer the public a safe and anonymous way to help prevent substance abuse. Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash both pose potential safety and health hazards. 3 P a g e 3 T he Highland Improvement Team (HIT) participated in the annual Make a Difference Day efforts this past Saturday. HIT joined forces with several organizations in the community to make this happen. Volunteers involved included member of the Highland Police Citizen on Patrol, Highland Kiwanis Club, Highland Woman s Club and the San Gorgonio and Pacific High School Key Clubs. Over forty volunteers came together to remove trash and litter under the Boulder Bridge. Some of the items that were removed from the flood control channel were tires, shopping baskets, cardboard, food containers and wrappers, drink cups, bottles and cans, plastic bags and miscellaneous trash that had been dumped in the area. We are thankful for everyone that helped out in this effort to fight blight and deter crime in our community. 4 P a g e 4 Administration Emergency Preparedness - Earthquakes One of the most frightening and destructive phenomena of nature is a severe earthquake and its terrible after effects. An earthquake is the sudden, rapid shaking of the earth, caused by the breaking and shifting of subterranean rock as it releases strain that has accumulated over a long time. For hundreds of millions of years, the forces of plate tectonics have shaped the earth, as the huge plates that form the earth s surface slowly move over, under and past each other. Sometimes, the movement is gradual. At other times, the plates are locked together, unable to release accumulated energy. When the accumulated energy grows strong enough, the plates break free. If the earthquake occurs in a populated area, it may cause many deaths and injuries and extensive property damage. The 2011 East Coast earthquake illustrated the fact that it is impossible to predict when or where an earthquake will occur, so it is important that you and your family are prepared ahead of time. The following are things you can do to protect yourself, your family and your property in the event of an earthquake: To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communication plan Fasten shelves securely to walls. Place large or heavy objects on lower shelves. Store breakable items such as bottled foods, glass, and china in low, closed cabinets with latches. Fasten heavy items such as pictures and mirrors securely to walls and away from beds, couches and anywhere people sit. Brace overhead light fixtures and top heavy objects. Repair defective electrical wiring and leaky gas connections. These are potential fire risks. Get appropriate professional help. Do not work with gas or electrical lines yourself. Install flexible pipe fittings to avoid gas or water leaks. Flexible fittings are more resistant to breakage. Secure your water heater, refrigerator, furnace and gas appliances by strapping them to the wall studs and bolting to the floor. If recommended by your gas company, have an automatic gas shut-off valve installed that is triggered by strong vibrations. Repair any deep cracks in ceilings or foundations. Get expert advice if there are signs of structural defects. Be sure the residence is firmly anchored to its foundation. Store weed killers, pesticides, and flammable products securely in closed cabinets with latches and on bottom shelves. Locate safe spots in each room under a sturdy table or against an inside wall. Reinforce this information by moving to these places during each drill. Hold earthquake drills with your family members: Drop, cover and hold on.
