The force behind this beautiful two storey traditional home is the family s passion for everything Star Wars, and a design team that understood their vision, eclectic style and need for functional space. Carrie Ann, John and their two boys moved into the house in 2007 after completing a small kitchen renovation. The transformation started when they decided to change the boys rooms to suit their sleeping habits. They hired Elizabeth Morris of Elizabeth Morris Interiors (EMI) to help maximize that upstairs space. EMI created one room where the boys sleep together with their dog, Fozzie, while the second room became a dressing room with lots of storage. That s when the whole thing started, Carrie Ann explains. decided to do the work all at once, and rented a neighbour s basement during the renovation. It made it convenient for decision making during the reno process, says Carrie Ann.

In the open-concept family room, Sutcliffe crafted a stunning modern angular surround to EMI s specifications. Existing marble remained intact, but a new insert was installed by FineLine Fireplaces.

The cathedral ceilings add drama and set the stage for this engaging, second floor family room.

Kitchen cabinets were refinished and floors were lifted and replaced to allow traffic flow between rooms, without transition. In the open-concept family room, Sutcliffe crafted a stunning modern angular surround to EMI s specifications. Existing marble remained intact, but a new insert was installed by FineLine Fireplaces. The room is warmed further by custom draperies and a bench seat covered with the same pattern from JF Fabrics. Carrie Ann is a hard-core Star Wars fan. It s the inspiration behind the Star Wars room. The cathedral ceilings add drama and set the stage for this engaging, second floor family room. A large wood-plank covered wall is the backdrop for a stunning collage of posters from Carrie Ann s collection. A massive modular sofa from Cornerstone Home anchors the space. Carrie Ann fell in love with it and had to have it. The large blue cabinet, also from Cornerstone, showcases a collection of original action figures. Fun accessories like the AT-AT walker and the spotlight add to the theme. We can all fit and be relaxed, Carrie Ann says. The plush carpet in the room, from Sarmazian Bros. Granite on the island, quartz on the countertops and a refreshing mix of colours on cabinetry dictated the serene grey tile on the backsplash. 56 ourhomes SPRING 2017 Carrie Ann s loves from the reno include an apron front sink from Watermarks Kitchen & Bath Boutique, in the boys bathroom, a funky zebra marble countertop from Graniteworx in the master bath, and a 400-pound rolling metal ladder, arranged through Sutcliffe and welded by Rosmar Welding. It was custom built to access a loft area off the master bedroom. The garage entry to the house originally led to a small hall beside the laundry room. The space was opened and ingeniously redesigned into a charming and functional mudroom-pantry combination by Sutcliffe Kitchens and Renovations. The upright freezer and Marvel bar fridge are handy when it s time to put groceries away. The floor is a pretty, practical tile with radiant heat. Carrie Ann tells the boys to throw their wet things on the floor. They dry in less than 10 minutes, she says. EMI also designed a new, open locker with upper and lower cubbies for easy storage. Adjacent to the locker is a clever pantry with lots of room to store and display oversize serving pieces. To complete the space, the design team chose a light grey herringbone backsplash from Sarmazian Bros. Flooring. The front entryway has been completely transformed. It had a heavy oak staircase, dark coloured walls and an entryway to the kitchen that was diminished by an existing coat closet. The closet was removed and the doorway enlarged to create a spacious, bright foyer that provides a better view of the kitchen and family room. EMI designed a visually captivating white panel treatment that was painstakingly moulded and installed by Sutcliffe Kitchens and Renovations. An absolutely stunning herringbone tile pattern, perfectly installed, again by Sarmazian, greets you at the door. Together with the eye catching runner that was carefully chosen to complement the tile not fight with it the result is a grand entry to this welcoming home. Continued on page 60 ourhomes SPRING

Off the foyer, a beautiful antique piano circa 1898, tunes up to be the focal point of the music room, while colour in the area rug from Pier 1 reflects the family s sense of fun and energy.
