2 For many of us the refurbishment or replacement of a kitchen has been a long held wish... To create a room totally from scratch is something we do only a handful of times in our life, and the prospect can seem exciting and daunting in equal measure. We have therefore designed our kitchen collections with these concerns and dreams at the forefront of our thinking. We have recently developed the freestanding ranges with our popular Moderne kitchen now also available in a freestanding option, whilst our stunning new Vermont kitchen is revealed here for the first time alongside our enduringly successful Bastide Kitchen. These freestanding options sit as a flexible alternative to the beautiful fitted ranges available in Bastide, Moderne and the chic Night and Day kitchens. Our kitchen collections are designed with an awareness of different styles of interior decor and how for many the kitchen is the focal point of our home that ties our lives and tastes together. We hope that this brochure guides you through both the functional decision making related to layout, and the fun part of choosing the worktops, handles and colours. 3 Kitchen couture or ready to wear? In developing our cabinetry and furniture we started with an idea that the kitchen is now a focal point of family life no matter if the family consists of two or twenty two... It seems even the definition of what the kitchen is has changed over recent years. Where previously it merely denoted a space for cooking, it has come to mean a place where any number of activities happen, both from the deeply traditional to those of the 21st century. These can include children doing homework, internet research, dining and entertaining, watching television and playing computer games, to the management of laundry and washing, relaxing or eating meals. With this need for versatility in mind we created kitchens both fitted, with all of the inherent design features, and freestanding, where one can literally install and subsequently remove the entire kitchen at minimal cost. If opting for a beautiful Fired Earth fitted kitchen one benefits from the complete service including design and project management of your kitchen installation. This will help maximise the use of awkward and unusual spaces, and allows the use of a number of handles, sinks and taps chosen to your exact taste. One can also use the fitted cabinets with stand alone complementary pieces from the freestanding collections for an eclectic mix. Daisy Lowe, shown in the fitted Bastide kitchen we created to suit her lifestyle, is delighted with the results. "I'm such a big fan of Fired Earth s Kitchen collections," Daisy says." Alternatively, the freestanding ranges allow for complete control over how to use the space in your home. You can either plan it yourself without the need for a designer, and then place an order online or through a showroom, or call upon our help to design a room for you. For a truly eclectic mix you can even order pieces of upholstered and occasional wooden furniture from the Fired Earth website made by our Lyon based sister company Grange. With over a hundred years of heritage, a choice of the finest walnut, cherry and oak woods, and extraordinary attention to detail, these pieces can add real lasting pleasure to the room. Spending time with friends and family is something most of us covet in our lives. 7 Bastide Freestanding The idea of the communality of a rural kitchen serving multi functions was at the heart of the design of this hand crafted collection. Before the zeal for labour saving devices turned the kitchen into more of a science lab, kitchens were the centre of the home that bound communities together, where heat and nourishment were found along with workers and family. 9 Moderne Fitted Sometimes you see something and you feel it s just right, that it s exactly what you ve been looking for and indeed that it must have existed forever. That is how we feel about the Moderne kitchen. It is truly a transitional kitchen in that it suits all types of home from the new build, back through the mid 20th Century; Victorian, Georgian and Elizabethan eras. Part of the beauty is that you can choose so many of the details from cabinet paint colour, worktop material and finish, handles and cornice to create the kitchen that suits you most. Glass fronted cabinets with mirrored backs add light and impact and act as a counter point to the beautiful craftsmanship of the visible dovetail joints available in the storage drawers. All of the units have oak internal finishes, and come with a single lever tap as standard. There are no glass shelves or mirrored backs as in the fitted option, making assembly simple and a highly effective way of getting a fantastic looking kitchen for less investment. You can customise the look with a choice of four worktop colours made from engineered stone, which are pre-cut to size and ready for you to fit onto your units. 13 Vermont Freestanding The stylistic origins of our Vermont kitchen, with its East Coast USA sensibility, country styled sink and textured wood options, seems perfectly up to date with the magpie like attitude our customers have to decorating. Wooden and painted cabinets juxtaposed with functional cookers and beautiful tiles epitomise the eclectic mix we have fallen in love with in the West over recent years. This is our most accessible kitchen to date and works wonderfully with the relaxed and unfussy interiors we create today. The kitchen looks perfect in homes where themes and styles are picked from across the globe in palettes of colours that layer wonderfully together. So many of us adore the soft whites and creams associated with Scandinavian style, the distressed woods of the French country look, and the sophisticated tailored look of US coastal homes with their wide variety of interiors finishes that we simply had to design a kitchen to meet this demand. 15 Night & Day Fitted Night and Day was designed very much as architectural furniture; a contemporary take on classic style with contrasting curves and structure that combine form and function in a hand finished kitchen. The stained ash timber works beautifully with the bronze metal detailing which is finished by hand from solid castings. We have provided the latest storage solutions in this kitchen to maximise all available space and the best of worktop materials to finish the detailing. With its generous capacity, it is a practical and durable element to your kitchen and is available in single and double options in various sizes. 25 Tap Options These beautifully crafted single lever taps are manufactured from 304 and 316 high grade stainless steel in the UK. Single lever taps allow for easy control of temperature and flow and the double O-ring pivot provides a smooth and secure rotation of the spout. The spray option provides both aerated and spray streams and for ease of use the head can be removed from the spout allowing for further flexibility. The silicone nozzles allow for easy cleaning. 26 Handle Options Our range of Moderne handles are forged and manufactured in England by a third generation family Brass Foundry in Birmingham. A mixture of simple and contemporary designs, the Circle and Cushion knobs are solid turned brass, the Pull, Snowdrift and Moderne bar are solid brass forged handles while the Square knob is machined solid brass. Each one is finished by hand in a beautiful Satin Nickel and will last for many, many years. Each handle can dramatically change the look of your kitchen choose just one or mix and match for a more individual look. 32 Fired Earth s guide to planning your freestanding kitchen design in 10 easy steps It isn t every day you plan a new kitchen, nor is it in all of our experience to have planned one that is not actually fitted. In order to demystify what creating a beautiful freestanding kitchen is about and how it is planned, we have mapped it out in ten easy steps. Planning your Freestanding KITCHEN 1. First you will need to create a sketched plan of your kitchen.work around the room in a clock-wise direction noting down your measurements in millimetres. When you have a completed plan which resembles your room you can start to position all doors, windows, sill heights, boxing, wall nibs, existing switches, sockets, water supply and drainage. Finally measure the height of your room taking into consideration any low beams and boxing as this will be useful when planning your wall cabinets. 2. From your rough sketch and measurements plot your room preferably onto graph paper. 3. When planning your kitchen consider your main feature appliances first, the sink, cooker and fridge/freezer and where you want to position them. When choosing your appliances for a freestanding kitchen you may typically opt for a range cooker, so will need to consider the width when selecting cabinet sizes. 4. Imagine yourself in your finished kitchen, with consideration to the four main areas most used where to cook, prepare, wash and store food. Think of a layout that will allow these areas to flow smoothly from one to another. 5. Next plan your secondary appliances such as the dishwasher, bin and utility items etc. When thinking about these bear in mind the space needed for the doors to open easily. It s most useful to have your dishwasher near to your sink and your bin near to your preparation area. Consider the walking distance from your cooker to your sink and fridge/freezer, you should aim to create a working triangle where possible. 6. Now that you have an idea of the position of your main appliances, fill in the spaces with your chosen freestanding floor units. Remember you are designing a freestanding kitchen so you will need to choose from the list of standard worktop lengths to create your design. A good tip is to start with your ideal size kitchen sink worktop and continue from there. 7. With your planned combination of floor units now in place, you can consider the position of the wall units. You can include some free-style furniture pieces to complete your kitchen design. 8. Now you are ready to write a list of all the cabinets you require. For every combination of freestanding floor units you should start with a worktop taken from our list of options and then add a left and right end panel and the floor units required to fill that space between. With every combination of wall units you should have a left and right end panel and the wall units between. The cornice comes complete with every wall unit and end panel ordered. Plinths are not required on a freestanding kitchen. 9. Remember the finer details. Add to your list the sink, waste, and choice of taps. Which door handles do you require and how many do you need? If you have any questions at this point please take your details to your nearest Fired Earth showroom where a consultant will talk you through your design and produce a detailed estimate. 10. When placing your order ask for information about lead times, delivery schedules and any appliances you may like to order at the same time. 33 Creating Your Freestanding Kitchen Freestanding furniture offers great flexibility, allowing you to select from a vast range of worktop sizes and finishes, followed by your own choice of wall and floor units. There are various units available allowing you to create a kitchen that is unique to you. In terms of kitchens, freestanding means a collection of furniture, composed of individual pieces that can be arranged to suit, re-configured, moved and added to with extra pieces; a matching dresser, butcher's block, dining table, chairs etc. The first step when designing your freestanding kitchen layout is to choose the size of the worktops as these will form the basis of the floor plan. Next you can select the units that you want to fit under each worktop - you will also need to choose the finish of your worktop and units and select your door and drawer handles, sink and tap. Please refer to the 'Choosing your Kitchen' section for further details on the options available and the technical specification section at the back of this brochure which shows the huge selection of units available, including wine racks, drawers and open shelves. 34 Kitchen Layouts Given how many of us knock out old larders and ancillary rooms in order to create a larger kitchen, extend sideward into entries and passageways or out into the garden, it s not surprising how our kitchens come in all shapes and sizes. We thought it may help to cover some of the layout options we have worked with, and their relative features. L Shape The beauty of the L shape kitchen is that it can accommodate cupboards on two adjacent walls allowing ample storage space. The layout of this kitchen creates a spacious feel and allows you to position your appliances for ease of use, with plenty of surface space available for preparation.the L-shape also helps to give shape to the rest of the room and can help define a corner when used in an open plan kitchen/dining room. U Shape The U shape design is most suited to larger kitchens as all three walls are able to accommodate cabinets and storage cupboards, which in turn provide a generous amount of surface space for preparation. This style of kitchen can showcase a variety of furniture and built-in appliances including fitted units and freestanding furniture creating a relaxed, eclectic feel. Island Kitchen Adding an Island unit is a fantastic way to maximise storage space and work surfaces whilst creating a stunning focal point in your kitchen. This layout is designed around a central location made up of cabinets and workspace, designed to work effectively with appliances and work stations based around the Island. Galley The Galley design is perfect for a more compact, rectangular shaped kitchen, where cabinets and workspace can be fitted along both sides. For a functional Galley kitchen you should position your cooker, refrigerator and sink in a triangle, two components positioned on one side and the third positioned centrally opposite.
