2 HISTORICAL FEATURES Population: 14 mil 1690: First traded with English East India Company 1500km southeast of Delhi Hooghly River Capital of British Raj until 1911 (when it was moved to Delhi) Heavily influenced by British, it is home to many of India s revolution(s/aries), especially the Naxalites, MarxistMaoist revolutionaries in the 60s 70s Jhumpa Lahiri s characters / plots often set in Kolkata The Lowland Revolutionaries madly in love are torn apart The Namesake Indian family moves to America Kolkata
3 THINGS TO EXPLORE Victoria Memorial Religious Dakshineshwar (Hindu) Howrah Bridge / Flower Market Magen David (Jewish) Nakhoda Masjid (Muslim) St. Paul s Cathedral (Christian, Anglican) Kolkata
4 URBAN CHALLENGES Waste management No land for fortified landfill, hence Dhapa Informal settlements centered around recycling industry Near my home Clean(er) Still pungent Dhapa Landfill 20k 30k ppl. Untreated Fires(air poll.) Age expectancy: 50 Kolkata
5 SOLUTIONS Pair increase in trash bin dispersion program (already existing 10,000 facelift to street trash bins) with increase in waste management at the dumpsite (don t just dump) Halt all agricultural outputs from surrounding areas Incentivize formalization of informal recycling through private sector with caveats. Currently, the Dhapa site is managed by the state. By privatizing the recycling of all potential materials with government oversight as to toxic waste, people will gain *relatively structured wages, and private industry can reap benefits of cheap, recyclable materials for resale. Ag. land (wetland) Dhapa Landfill (untreated) Kolkata
