City integrated stations A multidisciplinary task PEER FRANK, ARCHITECT URBAN PLANNER KARSTEN FICK; PROJECT DIRECTOR
What are city integrated stations? When we are planning for stations to new High speed trains or new railway lines outside the city we ca choose: a better integration between the cities urban spaces, the green/blue structures and the new stations. new stations build with a short link to the old stations and connection lines new stations localized with the purpose to achieve a better competition for public transport. 2
New stations Stations to new High speed trains or new railway lines have to be located outside the city border. In a Scandinavian context typical between 2 and 4 kilometers from the city center. A new station on the edge of the city border could determine the future urban growth direction if urban planning and station localization are planned together We know from studies that a station within meters from work places are very attractive for commuters and other travelers. 3
Urban planning Example 1 City transformation direction The station is lokalized in connection to a densed transformed urban area. The link betwen the old station and the new station can be the comming transformation area The plot ratio in the link can be increased 4
Urban planning Example 2 - Green/blue connection The station is lokalized in connection with a river, which is reorganized for climate reasons In connection with the river are new housing areas 5
Traffic When carrying luggage, even a few 100 meters can be long distance It is imperative to secure a very good and comfortable connection in-between the current and the new station This connection must also serve the City both the current city area, and the City Development areas This service must also run off-peak It is highly preferable that this connection has an identity of it own. That clearly identifies this as the City Connection. 6
The Classic solutions Diesel busses This is the easy reasonably cheap and quickly implemented solution The bus line 5 in Malmö and Copenhagen respectively, demonstrates the necessary clear identity But the large capacity is probably not justified It is a challenge that the High Speed Train will often off-load many passengers that all wants to travel Now!!! 7
More on the Classic solutions In a medium sized City, the clear identity have a large risk of being diluted over the years Then it is just another bus The trams and even more a Metro will most often prove prohibitively expensive. But there are other solutions 8
Driverless electric busses Not yet but soon Well suited for a distance less than a kilometre If provided with a reasonable right-ofway it is sufficiently fast Clear identity Can offer a flexible service also offpeak Can run through a green area with limited noise and no pollution (Not field proven) 9
Micro Metro As in airports Often called a Hecto High quality high capacity system Very adaptable to demands (But it is not cheap) 10
Cable Way Not as crazy as it mat appear at first glance Doubles as a tourist attraction Specially well suited in very dense cities, or if there are lakes and rivers all over the place 11 15/05/2017
Example Jönköbing One thing is certain. When planning city developments like this You have to consider all options and all possibilities. Standard solutions are just not sifficient 12 15/05/2017
This is also a Cable Way Just not suspended but with wire traction 13
The city's qualities In urban planning today it is a condition that the mordern city is a city with mixed use. The good city schall include good green areas It is important to preserve a part of the old buildings if possible and make good urban spaces around the new station 14
The city's qualities The link between the old station and the new station can contains densed urban areas because of the short distance to the stations. A lightrail can link the old station with the new station 15
Citizens' use of the city Build on the existing city life It is so much easier and faster then creating a social life in the street from nothing 16
Urban Anthropology The key to extending city life on the existing basis How do the citizens use the city Why??? Which further needs will they have in 10 years How will the changes in the city influence this? How to support the growth of what is already existing /05/2017
The city's climate management Climate management has an increasing importance in the modern city The blue element in the city can be an important recreative characteristics in new urban areas 18
Climate initiatives Nørreport station in Copenhagen the most busy station in the country has several climate initiatives. - Green roofs 19
The city's climate management - Lowered area for parking bicycles Climate initiatives can be an occasion to improve the quality of the urban space around the station 20
New Station - New Options Good examples are rare Aix-en-Provence TGV Station. The picture comes from a web page recommending to book a taxi in advance. Good idea it s a 13 km walk. 21
Another example - Lille Here there is a Metro But there are other problems Lille Europe Lille Flandres Two Stations Within the city 600 metres walk And a Metro connection (In the basement) But 30 % of the passengers at Lille Europe have to get a train at Lille Flandres 22
One from Germany Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe 3 km from the old station 3½ km from the City Centre Served by the local tram Fine! But 23
High Speed? Not through those curves 24
Summing up A new HST station provides a lot of opportunities for an existing city No solution is ideal it is all compromises But it is a Golden Opportunity. Any municipality should take the challenge. There are no easy solutions and no standard solutions it has to be investigated and balanced very carefully 25 15/05/2017
