Bronte Road (Hwy 25) is located to the west, the 407 Express Toll Route to the south and east, and Trafalgar Road further to the west and Lower Base Line further to the north. Ownership Private Access Access granted by owner. Site visit completed September 8, 2015 (AB, ES, CU) Current Use Residential-Commercial Existing Designation Listed on the Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value of Interest (OT Designated). Description: This property has potential cultural heritage value for its historic farmstead, including the house and outbuildings, historically associated with the agricultural development of Trafalgar Township. General Description Schellenberg Stables is an equestrian business (boarding and lessons) and residence. The property comprises a two-storey, vernacular farmhouse, stables, barns, grazing areas, and training arenas (indoor and outdoor). The property is bounded by agricultural fields to the east, west and south, and by a driving range to the north. The topography of the property is slightly rolling; the house is built on a high point. A number of mature trees and newer plantings were noted along the laneway and throughout the property, including: Manitoba Maple, Willow, Siberian Elm, Sugar Maple, Silver Maple, Oak, Hickory, Black Locust. Documentation and Inventory of Built Form List of Built Features: Two-storey, Edwardian style residence with aluminum cladding and hipped roof, with one storey tail (possibly earlier farmhouse) and a newer one storey addition off the east elevation; In-ground pool to the rear (north) of the residence, with wooden perimeter fence; Seven large outbuildings of varying ages, scales and materials (i.e., cinderblock, frame with metal or aluminum cladding), related to the activities of boarding and riding lessons; A newer structure east of the farmhouse is a recent replacement for an earlier cinderblock structure; A gravel laneway; and Fencing throughout the property delineates activity areas (primarily wooden) and white vertical plank fence at the entrance to the property. 4. Historical and Thematic Associations The 200- acre parcel comprising Lot 30, Concession II (DS) was first patented from the Crown to James Campbell, who is shown on the 1806 Wilmot survey map (Figure 3). 1 Campbell is shown occupying the south half of the lot on both Tremaine s 1858 Map of the County of Halton and the 1877 Map of Trafalgar, from the Illustrated Historical Atlas of the County of Halton. A farmhouse and orchard are indicated on the 1877 map (Figure 4). Burnhamthorpe Road was created in the 1850's, likely as a result of increase in land grants between 1840 and More land parcels were settled and subsequently farmed. Among Oakville s early exports were timber and potash, as local farmers undertook the process of clearing their land. By the 1840s and 1850s a great deal of land had been cleared and wheat fields were quickly established, followed by diversified grain crops. Following the crash in wheat price in 1857, fruit, in particular strawberries, began to be farmed commercially. Contextual Associations Land use in the vicinity of the property is dominated by agricultural fields. Agricultural fields are located to the east, west, and south of the property. A driving range is located to the north. Schellenberg Stables represents a portion of, what was once, a much larger farmstead which incorporated surrounding agricultural fields to the east, west and north of the existing property parcel. 39-5

Analysis & Recommendations Potential Heritage Value: Schellenberg Stables may have heritage value as a representative example of a 19 th century farmstead and because of its historical associations with 19 th century farming in Oakville. Its heritage value will depend on the integrity of the property (the extent to which it retains original elements of a 19 th century farmstead) in comparison with other farmsteads in the Town. The value may lie in the collection of buildings created for agricultural purposes, and their placement on the site and in relation to the road and fields, more than in individual buildings. Actions: The property at 2483 Burnhamthorpe Road West is one of a number of former farmsteads listed on the Town Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest. It may be beneficial for the Town to look at these farmsteads as a group before making decisions about their heritage value and the appropriate means of protection. The Town could consider a heritage designation under Part IV OHA, but this may be an inappropriate tool to protect a Continuing (Evolved) Landscape; such a property may be better conserved through zoning or other planning measures. A low priority level is recommended for the following reasons: Potential for development of surrounding area; and All existing built and natural cultural heritage resources may not have been identified or included in current listing. 11.
