museomix 3 DAYS 6 LOCATIONS 3 COUNTRIES GRENOBLE LENS NANTES PARIS QUÉBEC SHROPSHIRE NOV Ironbridge, 21 th October, 2013 PRESS RELEASE Museomix 08, 09 and 10 of November 2013 Open to public from the 10 th at 3 p.m. and on the 11 th or 12 th, depending on the venue. The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust is taking part in Museomix, a ground breaking international museum collaboration. For three intensive days a huge pool of expertise and inspiration is brought together to help co-create and test new ways of approaching exhibitions and developing new museum experiences. During the event museum professionals, designers, web-coders, hackers, digital technology experts, art lovers, education experts and museum fans will work in teams to develop 7 prototypes that will be created and tested during the event. Participants are given a blank canvas to come up with their own innovations. Museomix creates an environment that allows participants to imagine, design and test new ways of working in museums and develop innovations that can be adopted not only by the host organisation but by museums across the world, helping them to become more open, networked and responsive to the communities around them. The first Museomix took place in France in 2011 and since then the concept has evolved and this year events will take place at locations in France, Quebec and at Ironbridge in the UK. During the event in Ironbridge, not only do the teams have the resources of a state of the art Fab Lab (Fabrication Laboratory), complete with 3D printers, a laser cutter, electronics equipment and a moulding machine to help create prototypes but there is also a world wide community that can be called upon to guide the development process and help solve problems. Anna Brennand, Chief Executive, Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust commented: For three hundred years the Ironbridge Gorge has been at the cutting edge of technology and famous for its innovative approach to product development. Museomix continues this proud tradition. The Trustees, volunteers and staff are looking forward to seeing the prototypes developed during the event, which will offer new ways of experiencing our museums. As we will give a blank canvas to the teams, we do not know whether these innovations will be web based, new methods of interpretation for our current exhibitions or brand new exhibits. That is the joy of Museomix, it is a journey into the unknown. 5 MUSEOMIX IN 5 QUESTIONS WHAT? It's the first ever cultural make-a-thon : teams of six participants are given three days to create new ways of bringing cultural content to life. WHO? Anyone! The only requirements are curiosity and enthusiasm. Museomix brings together museum professionals, new media practitioners, innovators and culture enthusiasts. Participants are selected via two calls for proposals - this year's were in June and September. The teams are multidisciplinary and will have a graphic designer, content developer, curator, a web-developer, a maker... or any similar mix of complementary skills. Each museum will host 8-10 teams that all create their own prototype exhibit. WHY? To reinvent museums, inspired by the possibilities of new media. And to create a networked museum-laboratory that invites participation. WHEN? Over three days and two nights from 8-10 November Museum visitors will be able to test the prototypes on 10 November from 3pm and on the 11 th or 12 th, depending on the venue. WHERE? Simultaneously in 6 locations in 3 countries: France: Louvre-Lens, Château des ducs de Bretagne-musée d histoire de Nantes, Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris and Musée Dauphinois de Grenoble; Québec: Musée de la civilisation de la ville de Québec; UK: Ironbridge Gorge Museums, Shropshire. 5

museomix how to remix a museum? before the event As soon as one edition ends, the Museomix adventure begins again for the following year. The call for projects is announced in January, to allow museums to set things up properly and forecast the budget needed to host the event. Any museum can take part in the event, as long as they meet the Museomix criteria. This process allows several communities to be simultaneously mobilised in museums around the world. This year, six museums are involved. When the museum is ready, a team of local co-organisers is created and a local coordinator is appointed to communicate with the global Museomix team and oversee the main aspects of the event. In June, a call for applicants is launched to enrol enthusiastic participants. It is important for the community to mix expertise (makers, digital developers, communicators, historians ) and profiles (students, professionals and non-professionals ) to create a successful cocktail of creativity and skills. A second call for applicants takes place in September to complete the teams, depending on the needs of each local Museomix. DURING THE EVENT D1 EXPLORING AND EXCHANGING IDEAS On the first day, participants receive a badge highlighting their expertise when they arrive (i.e. developer, communicator, content expert ) and then discover the museum through a guided tour with the museum teams, especially the spaces that will be remixed. Participants reflect, exchange ideas and goals. D1 The teams begin developing their ideas and explore, imagine, annotate, sketch and make storyboards. Coaches are there all the Participants then pitch their ideas to others and organise themselves into teams of seven or eight people that have different profiles for each project. time to help, provide information and point out good ideas or potential challenges. In the evening, each team presents their project to the others, showing how it enhances the visitor experience. Everyone is invited to help, advise, suggest new ideas and express any concerns. D2 This is when teams develop their prototype. They start building it using advice from the coaches and the technical resources D2 TRYING, TESTING, MAKING and materials found in the Tech Shop (digital tablets, cables, video projectors ) and the Fab Lab (3D printers, printed circuits ). In the evening, each team presents their work in progress to the other participants using a video or model and explains how visitors will interact with the prototype during their visit. D3 The Sunday morning is dedicated to finishing the prototypes. The teams set them up in the exhibition spaces and write D3 GETTING PROTOTYPES READY FOR VISITORS labels. D3 TO D4 VISITORS START TESTING THE PROTOTYPES At the end of the day, visitors can access the Museomixed exhibition spaces to test the prototypes and tell the teams what they think. The fourth day is dedicated to visitors trying out the prototypes. D48

museomix SELECTION OF LAST YEAR'S PROJECTS The second Museomix took place from October 2012 at the Lyon-Fourvière Gallo-Roman Museum and its adjoining archaeological site. Located on the Fourvière hillside, the centre of the Roman town of Lugdunum founded in 43BC. Numerous traces of the town remain, the most significant being its theatre and odeon (a small concert hall), which were made World Heritage Sites in Prototype #3 (Konnectikus team): Window on the past A huge bay-window in the Museum frames panoramic views of the roman theatres that lie just outside its walls. Konnectikus were inspired to create a dialogue between the museum interior, with its rich historic content, and the physical reality of the exterior, to enhance visitors' understanding of the remains of the historic town. As visitors approached the window, they perceived a row of four screens showing augmented reality visualisations of the view. These represented the history of the site at four points in time. Historical information was layered over the view, allowing visitors to better appreciate the richness of these exceptional archaeological remains. Prototype #5 (UesBeus team): Hey Ben Hur, slow down! This arcade-game-style chariot race animated the Museum's Roman games mosaic; it was the brain child of team UesBeus. A looped video showed the race and the different dangers participants would face on the track. As the players raced around the track, obstacles appeared, slowing their chariots. Players had to overcome each obstacle in order to get back in the race. The races were broadcast beyond the Museum's four walls: interested parties interacted with participants by tweeting cheers, messages, reactions... all of which were read out by a commentator. Young visitors (and their parents) were thrilled by this fun and educational interface that encouraged learning through play. Prototype #9 (Disk durus team): Street-sounds Disk durus decided to transform the Museum's model of a specific area of Lugdunum by creating a link between the model and real place. They invited visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the model, before stepping out onto the site itself. Visitors brought the model to life by sliding a digital tablet - disguised as a magnifying glass - over the model's protective case. The tablet allowed them to listen in on the interior life of the buildings, revealing the daily life of the area through a video reconstruction narrated by period characters. In this way the intervention allowed visitors to imbibe the life of the historic quarter, to which they could later bring their own story when they visited the site. The main aims of Museomix #2 were to create a dialogue with historic objects that transcend time, by bringing their stories to life especially those surrounding their construction, use and place in daily life. A major challenge was to place the museum and the archeological site in the midst of the historic town, recreating history against a backdrop that differs entirely to what contemporary visitors see before them. Finally, the Museomixers wanted to create a playful relationship with history and historic artefacts, turning visitors into actors. All of this mixed with humour, something that our community of Museomixers has plenty of! 10
museomix TESTIMONIES FROM THE MUSEOMIX COMMUNITY Mar Dixon Museum Consultant Bridgnorth, Shropshire Project Coordinator MuseomixUK I first heard Museomix in 2011 when I caught the hashtag on Twitter it was so exciting! Only problem was it was in French (I don t read/speak French) but that didn t stop me from wanting to get involved. In 2012 I was able to hear Samuel Bausson speak about Museomix at the MuseumNext. Now I had the explanation, I wanted to be part of it even more! After being part of Museomix in Lyon France, I am now project coordinator for MuseomixUK. I knew I wanted to bring the ethos of Museomix to the UK and chose Ironbridge Gorge Museums as the first location for several reasons but mostly because I knew the home of Industrial Revolution was perfect for this next revolution in museums. Ironbridge Gorge Museums are open-minded and forward thinking the perfect marriage for Museomix. For me, Museomix is about making real changes not just physical prototypes but with open dialog and data. And breaking barriers and stereotypes along the way. Shane Kelleher Archaeology and Monuments Officer, Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust Ironbridge Museomixer at MuseomixUK Having worked at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums for the past three years I am especially aware of the history of invention, innovation, and ingenuity in this beautiful and inspiring part of the world. This spark of creativity is alive and well at the museum and my colleagues and I are very excited to have the opportunity to host and participate in this groundbreaking international event. We are eager to meet and engage with the diverse group of talented and passionate people who have signed up for MuseomixUK and see how they interact and engage with our museums, exhibitions, collections and monuments. On a personal level, I am particularly interested in how, using technology, museums can enrich the visitor experience and make their collections more accessible and relevant to diverse audiences. Museomix has this as one of its core principles and I am looking forward to seeing what ideas the other participants come up with and develop during their time at Ironbridge. It is this opportunity to conceive, develop, test and implement an idea that makes Museomix so unique I am looking forward to seeing what we create! Antoine Courtin Digital technology applied to Heritage Studies Engineer Paris X University Nanterre Coach and Web team leader for Museomix Nantes First Museomix is a collective experience during which brains are brought together in order to re-invent the museum visitor experience; anything is eventually possible with an enthusiastic community! I enjoy taking part in a community which brings digital tools into museum storytelling. Digital tools are too often perceived negatively in museums. In this community, the use of digital tools in the museum world is considered as obvious. When one day, adding the word digital will not be necessary anymore, the challenge will be won. I have heard about Museomix through my museum literature and news monitoring. I took part in Museomix 2012 as a web team member. This year, I will manage the Nantes web team. This third edition is a real challenge as the Château des ducs de Bretagne is already at the cutting edge of technology. We will have to find new ideas, touch the magic and create dream and emotion generators. I expect these new devices to surprise me and to investigate unexplored fields like sensory or sound design. Christophe Courtin Digital project headmaster at Château des ducs de Bretagne Co-orga for Museomix Nantes I know the Museomix founders well. In 2011, they contacted me to be part of the coach team in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. I took part in the second event in Lyon in This kind of short term workshop in an interdisciplinary team provides a huge enrichment for the participants. Hosting the third edition of Museomix at the Château des ducs de Bretagne fits into the digital strategy of the museum and is moreover an opportunity for all the museum teams to reflect about their missions and their job. I am really interested in the new devices that will be developed in the playground offered to the Museomixers. I expect inventiveness and new points of view both on our exhibits and on the history they illustrate. 11
museomix ShRoPshire The Ironbridge Gorge Museums Founded in 1967 the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust is a registered charity with the twin aims of education and conservation. The Trust manages 10 museums along with 35 historic buildings and monuments, a research library, a Tourist Information Centre, two youth hostels, archaeological sites, historic woodlands, housing, two chapels, and two Quaker burial grounds. Ironbridge Gorge is known across the world as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and the place where, in 1709, Abraham Darby I perfected the art of smelting iron with coke rather than charcoal. The Ironbridge Gorge was designated a World Heritage Site in The Museomix event is being held at Enginuity in Coalbrookdale, the historic heartland of the World Heritage Site where the Industrial Revolution began and where the remains of Darby's original furnace can still be seen. Enginuity opened in 2001 and is the National Design and Technology Centre, where both young and old can discover how everyday objects are designed and manufactured with the help of large scale interactive exhibits. Workshops are held for educational groups and for members of the public during school holidays, during which they are guided through both design and scientific principles before making and testing their own prototypes from craft materials and simple components. Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron is housed in the original warehouse of the Coalbrookdale Company and boasts a fine collection of decorative iron castings along with models and displays that explain the role of the Coalbrookdale iron masters during the Industrial Revolution. Alongside the museum is the Old Furnace where Abraham Darby I made his great discovery. This Ancient Scheduled Monument was first excavated in the 1950s and has subsequently been the subject of much research. A cover building was constructed to protect the structure in Across the Gorge other museums celebrate different aspects of the Industrial Revolution. The ceramics story is told at Coalport China Museum, Jackfield Tile Museum and Broseley Pipeworks. At all of these museums wonderful collections are displayed in original factory buildings and visitors can often watch skilled craftsmen in action. The largest museum is Blists Hill Victorian Town. Founded 40 years ago the museum recreates life at the turn of the last century on the East Shropshire coalfield. Costumed demonstrators work in the shops, cottages and small factories and talk to visitors about the history of the area. The Museum welcomes over half a million visitors a year from across the world, including 70,000 educational visitors. The Trust is an Arts Council England Major Partner Museum and as such plays a leadership role for the sector. 12
