1 Landscape Horticulturist Regulation and Training Standards Consultation Discussion Guide Introduction SUBMISSIONS DUE: February 6, 2018 This consultation guide is sent on behalf of the Landscape Horticulturist Provincial Advisory Committee (PAC). All PAC s are established by the Apprenticeship and Certification Board (Board) and make recommendations regarding technical training and the content of regulations. The Landscape Horticulturist PAC is currently considering recommendations to the Board on amendments to the trade regulation and trade training standards. Before it makes any recommendations, the PAC must seek input from employers and employees in the trade. Based on the feedback it receives, the PAC may re-evaluate its recommendations. This discussion guide has been created to solicit your feedback in order to inform the PAC. Background The trade regulation for Landscape Horticulturist was registered in The task of updating the training standards for Landscape Horticulturist was added to the Board s Strategic Plan for for the purpose of harmonizing the technical training with national Red Seal standards. Proposed Recommendations A. Training Standards The Landscape Horticulturist PAC is asking for your feedback on the proposed Chart (Appendix A) which outlines the units in each level of technical training. You may refer to the current Chart (Appendix B) for comparison. Do you agree or disagree with the changes to the Chart? If you disagree, what changes would you recommend? B. Regulatory Scope Please consider the following proposed changes to the scope statement and determine if the tasks outlined are representative of the scope of the trade. 2 Current Scope Statement "landscape horticulturalist" means a person who, to the standard indicated in the occupational analysis for the trade, (a) constructs and installs hard and soft landscaping in accordance with principles of landscape design and construction; (b) operates and services tools and machinery used in landscaping and horticulture; (c) controls plant production; (d) maintains inventory of plant materials for production and retailing purposes; (e) manages the growth cycle of plants, climatic conditions and nutrient levels in greenhouses; and (f) oversees the production cycles and daily maintenance of nurseries. Proposed Scope Statement "landscape horticulturalist" means a person who, to the standard indicated in the occupational analysis for the trade, (a) constructs and installs hard and soft landscaping in accordance with principles of landscape design and construction; (b) operates and services tools and machinery used in landscaping and horticulture; (c) controls plant production; (d) maintains inventory of plant materials for production and retailing purposes; (e) propagates, cultivates and studies plants, and treats injured and diseased plants; and (f) maintains and repairs hard and soft landscape elements.
