1 Administration & Finance Campus Facilities Planning Committee Agenda Item Description Form 1. Item: UH Law Center Courtyard Upgrades 2. Requesting Department: Facilities Management (FM) Minor & Planned Projects and UH Law Center 3. Contact Names & Phone Numbers: FM Minor & Planned Projects Project Manager: Stephanie Anorga, ext UH Law Center Richard Alderman, ext Allen Emerson, ext Presenter: Stephanie Anorga (FM) and Courtney Harper + Partners 5. Recommendation/Action Requested: Approval 6. Summary: At the November 2012 CFPC meeting, the committee approved exterior enhancements to the courtyard areas of Teaching Unit II and the Bates Law Building at the Law Center. These improvements outdoor sitting/study areas, a Cougar Red, white, and grey paint scheme on the courtyard walls, and three black metal Albertus Magnus silhouettes mounted on the courtyard s stairwell wall. Courtney Harper + Partners, an architectural firm contracted through Plant Operations continuing professional services program, is working with FM, FP&C, and the Law Center on the construction document for this scope of work. Upon further study of the courtyard, the Law Center believes that shading the seating areas would significantly improve the functionality of the space. In this agenda item, the Law Center would like to present for the committee s consideration an addition to its previous request: the construction of shade structures within the courtyard. The concept development for the courtyards includes a factory-painted structural steel framework with gray, red, and frosted translucent glazed roofing panels anchored to the steel members. The framework will be fastened to the courtyard s concrete walls and will be high-wind-resistant. There 1 CFPC meeting, 03/08/13
2 will be no penetrations of the courtyard deck and thus no risk of water migration to below ground functional areas. Component finishes are warrantied for 10 years or more. The shade structures are supportive of the goals of the original courtyard improvement project by providing enhanced student social and study areas. The courtyard for the Bates Law Building is also planned as an exterior pre-function gathering space for alumni and visitors attending conference and social events at the school. The design of the shade structures will include new lighting which will provide ambient and emergency egress lighting for the courtyards to extend the use of these spaces into the evening hours. 7. Proposed Start Date: Upon approval 8. Supporting Documentation Description: Location plan and renderings, attached 2 CFPC meeting, 03/08/13
