5 WATERFRONT PARK PHASE IV This 22-acre expansion of Waterfront Park will extend public open space along the Ohio River corridor, uniting downtown and West Louisville along the waterfront, becoming the newest addition to this world class park. 6 WATERFRONT PARK PHASE IV OBSERVATION PIER The observation pier serves as the iconic centerpiece of Phase IV providing stunning vantages and unparalleled vistas of both the river and the downtown skyline. The pier is not only a location for passive viewing and informal gatherings, it is specifically designed to accommodate a 250-person tent, allowing it to serve as leasable space for waterfront weddings, concerts, fundraisers and other such events. 7 A DESTINATION ON THE RIVER The distinct barge shape of the cantilevered pier hovers over the lower river path and creates unique and inviting spaces below the structure where one can find shade and respite. A central opening allows users to traverse between the upper and lower levels through a series of stadium steps connecting the lower pathway to the plaza and pier above. 8 WATERFRONT PARK PHASE IV EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AREA This is not your ordinary playscape it is a creative learning experience with the primary goal of connecting kids to the river through creative play structures that challenge and engage, and interactive displays that stimulate learning, creativity and imagination. 8

10 WATERFRONT PARK PHASE IV THE MIDWAY CONNECTOR The extension of the Louisville Loop through Phase IV will create a vibrant and highly amenitized walking and bicycling path through the park. Located under Interstate 64, the Midway Connector will use color, paint and creative lighting to support an open and inviting experience. CONCEPTUAL RENDERING 10

12 WATERFRONT PARK PHASE IV CONFLUENCE PLAZA Located at the easternmost corner of the site and directly accessible from River Road s planned extension, the Confluence Plaza will be the gateway to Phase IV from Downtown. The open space will blend landscape and public gathering areas with sculptural and interactive water features. CONCEPTUAL RENDERING 12

13 FORT-ON-SHORE PLAZA Named after the historic fort that once occupied this location, Fort-On-Shore Plaza is located at the intersection of 12th Street and Rowan Street. 14 WATERFRONT PARK PHASE IV FIRST PHASE OF IMPLEMENTATION While MSD s tunnel project will occupy the majority of the park site through 2020, the area immediately along the river is currently available to begin construction of the observation pier and railyard plaza, experiential play area, activity lawns and flexible space for temporary events. 15 CONNECT AND ACTIVATE The initial phase of implementation, which can begin immediately, includes improving and enhancing the Riverwalk under I-64 from 4th Street westward, and creating access to the park using the 10th Street parking lot and the existing Riverwalk. Selective clearing of overgrown vegetation along the banks will create views to the river. Lawn areas will be installed on the upper level for programming and recreational activities along the multi-use path, connecting to the observation pier. The Riverwalk s mixed-use path enters Phase IV at 10th Street, connecting pedestrians and bicyclists throughout Waterfront Park. 17 RIVERWALK AND RIVER ROAD ENHANCEMENTS Planned improvements to River Road will transform this corridor into a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly destination along the waterfront. An enhanced Riverwalk will create inviting open spaces along the water and interconnected bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
