4 2011 Waste Management Calendar February Contact Valley Waste or (toll free) Clear Bags for Garbage Update We introduced clear garbage bags in 2008 to improve handling safety and to encourage recycling and composting. Valley residents and businesses embraced this change and it has made a great difference - we re now sending far less waste to landfill and we re recycling and composting 20% more. But did you know that clear garbage bags are not just for curbside collection? The same clear bag rules apply at both Management Centres as well as (at curbside) for Spring and Fall Clean-up. Clear bags at the Management Centres and Cleanup protect employees from unseen hazards and help ensure banned items are not being sent to landfill. This in turn allows us to better educate the generator of the waste. Did you know the following items are banned from landfill in Nova Scotia? This means it is against the law to dispose of these items in the regular garbage. Beverage containers Steel/tin food cans Milk Cartons Plastic bags and food containers Cardboard, newsprint, recyclable paper Food waste and soiled paper Leaf & yard waste All flammable, corrosive, explosive, poisonous and infectious household hazardous wastes Paint Car batteries Automotive tires Recyclable electronics Call us for Disposal Options at , or info@vwrm.com Town of Hantsport a haven of hospitality 20 Main Street, PO Box 399 Hantsport, NS B0P 1P0 Phone: Fax: For a Quote on your new home call fax sales@denimhomes.com Enhance your experience with an award winning builder MAKING A DIFFERENCE ONE CUP AT A TIME. 12 2011 Waste Management Calendar June Contact Valley Waste or (toll free) Don t take a Vacation from Recycling! Recycling and composting are important to the environment. They divert precious resources from the landfill, conserve energy and reduce harmful greenhouse gases. The best part is that it is something every Nova Scotian can do every day. Yet so many of us don t think we need to recycle or compost while on vacation or at our summer home. finish up PAINT & HOMESCAPING Upholstery Window treatments and installation Home Color consultations Featuring Sorting at the cottage is just as important as at home. We eat the same food and drink as we do at home and thus, throw away the same valuable materials/containers. Every seasonal home in the Valley has access to recycling and composting, whether at a Cottage drop-off bin, roadside (public road), or at a private campground. So make a vow this summer. Recycle and compost while on vacation and do your part for the environment. Are you a member of a cottage association? Why not invite Valley Waste staff to talk to your group. We can go over sorting and discuss any collection issues or ideas for your area. Cottage bins are intended for seasonal residences on private roads only. 14 2011 Waste Management Calendar July Plastics in the Compost? Contact Valley Waste or (toll free) In the past while, there has been a growing problem with plastics in the green carts. Much of this stems from confusion over what types of bags are acceptable in Valley carts. Paper? Plastic? Oxo-degradable? Compostable? The food waste that is collected from our green carts is used to make a rich soil amendment called compost. When the wrong items are put in the carts and sent to the compost facility, they contaminate the finished product and also damage machinery at the facility. So what type of bag is best? Paper is the best option. Whether you purchase paper bags or reuse boxboard (cereal & cracker boxes) to hold your food scraps, paper breaks down readily and does not interfere with the finished compost. If you must use a plastic-like bag for your food scraps, please ensure that it is a certified 100% compostable bag. Compostable bags are marked with one of the following two logos. These logos certify that the bag meets industry standards for composting. Both the individual bags and the package will be marked with the logo. If the bag does not carry one of these symbols, it is not accepted in the green carts - no matter what the packaging may claim. And it goes without saying, please, no garbage in the green cart! Visit vwrm.com to download our brochure detailing acceptable compostable bags. 18 2011 Waste Management Calendar September Contact Valley Waste or (toll free) Safety First While We Watch our Wasteline The safety of our employees and those who provide services on our behalf is our most important priority and we need your help! Injuries are reported every day as the result of items being disposed of unsafely. What you put in your waste could hurt someone s mom, dad, brother, sister, son or daughter. While switching to a clear-bag collection system has helped increase visibility, there is still more we can do!! The following is a list of items that need careful consideration prior to disposal along with tips on how best to handle them safely: Explosives and ammunition Ammunition can be returned to any RCMP division. For explosives (yes, they re out there!) contact CFB Aldershot or CFB Greenwood. Glass, knives, scissors - These can all puncture workers. Please place medical waste in the garbage. Call us for more information on medical waste and its proper disposal. Propane tanks Propane tanks (full or empty) are hazardous waste. Bring them to our Management Centres, free of charge. Sharps - All Pharmacies in NS provide containers for diabetic needles and lancets and accept the full container free of charge. All other needles can be brought to VWRM in a tightly sealed container, free of charge. Ashes - Do not belong in the green cart. Green carts are ventilated and can stoke seemingly cold ashes back to life. Not only have ashes caused fires in garbage trucks and green carts, but also homes and garages when placed in the green cart next to a building. Set ashes outside in a metal container for at least 3 weeks and then spread on your lawn or garden. If that is not an option, put COLD ashes in clear garbage bags and set out for roadside collection. 20 2011 Waste Management Calendar October Where can we improve? Contact Valley Waste or (toll free) The Province has challenged all Nova Scotians to reduce their garbage by 1/4 by the year This motivated Valley Waste to conduct an audit of curbside garbage last summer to see where the Valley could improve. While we noticed that recycling and composting had improved since the last audit in 2006, we still found that 30% of what was in the garbage, could have been recycled or composted. In addition, much of the materials that made up this 30% were recurring items found outside the kitchen area. We seem to have mastered how to sort in the kitchen but in order to reach our provincial goal, we must remember that recycling and composting can occur anywhere. Contact Valley Waste or (toll free) Blue bags of recycling that are collected at roadside or received through our Management Centres go through a rigorous process before those materials are transformed into new products. Bags are opened and separated by Scotia Recycling in Kentville. It is here where cans, plastic containers, glass bottles and milk cartons and all types of paper are sorted into marketable commodities. Once sorted, the materials are baled into uniform blocks for easy shipping. Once baled, the materials are again loaded onto a truck and sold to market where they are made into many useful products.
