4 SCOTIA RECYCLING LIMITED FEBRUARY 2015 SOLID WASTE AND YOUR TAX DOLLARS CONTACT VALLEY WASTE or (toll free) Valley Waste is an inter-municipal organization encompassing the Municipality of Annapolis County, the Municipality of the County of Kings, and the Towns of Annapolis Royal, Berwick, Bridgetown, Hantsport, Kentville, Middleton and Wolfville. We are essentially, the solid waste department for these nine municipalities. We re governed by an authority board, made of municipal representatives, and receive an operating budget from a portion of taxes collected in each municipality. For the past few years, we have experienced increased budget constraints. Costs to core solid waste services have increased (curbside collection, landfilling, recycling, composting) while at the same time, funding has decreased. As a result, unfortunate budget cuts were made to balance these increases. The following information breaks down the average cost per serviced unit for all solid waste services in the Valley Region BUDGET Curbside Collection... $ Residual Disposal... $ Management Centres... $ Organics Processing... $ Recycling Processing... $ Education & Enforcement... $ Administration... $ Fiscal Services Financing... $ 7.79 Capital Reserves... $ 3.37 Construction/Demolition Debris... $ 3.10 Information Technology... $ 1.12 Less Revenues (funding, tipping fees)... $ (71.11) Average Cost per Serviced Unit... $ Distribution of Costs/Serviced Unit BUDGET Curbside Collection... $ Garbage Disposal... $ Management Centres... $ Organics Processing... $ Recycling Processing... $ Education & Enforcement... $ Administration... $ Fiscal Services Financing... $ 8.09 Construction/Demolition Debris... $ 2.60 Capital Reserves... $ 1.88 Information Technology... $ 1.21 Less Revenues (funding, tipping fees)... $ (67.24) Average Cost per Serviced Unit... $ Note: A serviced unit is a single family dwelling, seasonal home, apartment and all business units. 12 KD ROGERS WELL DRILLING For most residents of the Valley, garbage day goes smoothly and there s rarely a problem. However, sometimes, bags aren t taken and it can be hard to figure out why. Follow these guidelines to ensure that your bags and green cart are picked up every collection day. 1. Have it out on time. We can t stress it enough to have your bags out before 8:00am (or 7:00am in some areas). The collectors try to maintain the same route but, for countless reasons, they may have to change their course and arrive at a road much earlier than usual. Play it safe and have it out by 8:00 am 2. Bag limits. Did you put out more than one solid colour garbage bag? More than 4 garbage? The last page of this calendar details bag limits and how to package waste 3. Follow the sorting guide. Did your garbage bag contain food waste or recyclables? Did the green cart have plastic shopping bags inside? Make sure you re recycling and composting all you can. In Nova Scotia, certain items are banned from landfill and can t be put in the garbage 4. No heavyweights, please. The collectors do their best to take all waste but sometimes, items are just too big to JUNE IT WASN T TAKEN! NON-COMPOSTABLE BAGS A common mistake made in green carts is the use of non-compostable bags. A paper bag to contain food waste in your cart is the best option. If you must use a plastic like bag, please ensure it is certified compostable and is marked with one of these logos. CONTACT VALLEY WASTE or (toll free) collect. Be sure that bags weigh less than 15 kg and green carts weigh less than 100 kg 5. Make it accessible. Many circumstances can block a driver s access to bags - snow drifts, parked cars, unsafe terrain, dogs, unsafe storage bins. Be sure that what you set out is accessible and clearly visible to the driver If you re still wondering about a missed collection or sorting, contact us anytime with questions or toll free info@vwrm.com Uhlman Branch Road, Nictaux Box 598 Kingston NS B0P 1R0 Site Tel: (902) Tel: (902) Fax: (902) Debris Construction Waste Disposal Hours: Mon-Fri 8am to 5pm Sat 8am to 12 noon We take wood, concrete, drywall, pipe, shingles, carpeting, tile, etc. Call us for a complete list and prices. 14 KD ROGERS WELL DRILLING Each year, Northridge Farms in Dempsey s Corner turns over 10,000 metric tonnes of Valley organics into a rich soil amendment called compost. Farmers and gardeners use this compost to improve the health of their soil. Unfortunately, plastics, metal, glass and garbage are still ending up in green carts on a daily basis. These items can ruin the finished product, cause personal injury or damage machinery at the composting facility. Shopping bags are not meant for composting. Only food waste, yard waste and soiled papers go in the green cart. REDUCE ODOUR IN YOUR CART Wrap food waste in newspaper or cereal/cracker boxes Keep the cart in the shade Put the cart out every collection Clean out the fridge the day before collection Refrigerate or freeze very smelly items until collection Hose out the cart periodically NEVER USE REGULAR PLASTIC OR BIODEGRADABLE BAGS They don t break down and contaminate the compost. INSECTS A PROBLEM? If maggots arrive, put the cart in bright light and leave the lid open. They will crawl down away from the light. Practice preventative measures after next collection. 22 KD ROGERS WELL DRILLING NOVEMBER CONTACT VALLEY WASTE or (toll free) We call it yard waste, but it s not really waste. Leaves and pine needles are a valuable resource. The great thing is, you can easily manage most of them on your own property with a little help from Mother Nature. MULCHING Mulching leaves is probably the easiest alternative to bagging them for roadside collection. Shred leaves with a mower into small pieces and spread over your lawn. As the tiny pieces of leaf decompose, they ll add nutrients and organic matter to the lawn. Shredded leaves can also be lightly dug into flower or vegetable gardens as an organic fertilizer and soil conditioner. Photo caption: You ll have a healthier lawn - as leaf mulch breaks down, it naturally fertilizes the soil. Can t manage all the leaves on your own? Bring leaves to our Management Centre for free (remove from bags, please). We also have a list of people who want clean leaves for their own composting. LEAVE THOSE LEAVES ALONE! COMPOSTING If you haven t tried backyard composting already, there s no time like the present to start! Leaves are a wonderful addition to any backyard composter and break down quickly to make a first-rate fertilizer. Valley Waste can provide you with information on starting a backyard compost pile, where to purchase or how to build one. Pine needles make great mulch for acid loving plants such as blueberries, rhododendrons, bleeding hearts, holly and yews.
