2 Thank you Everything in its right place! for taking the time to sort your waste! By recycling and reusing various materials we save energy and natural resources. If waste is sorted correctly, much of it can be put to use and recycled. The headings below correspond to the types of waste handled by the recycling centres. This guide lists examples of what can be brought to the centres. Please contact staff if you are uncertain. Welcome! This sorting guide contains directions to simplify your visit to the recycling centres at Falkenberg and Varberg. To ensure your visit goes as smoothly as possible and for your and our safety, we ask you to bear in mind the following prior to your visit: Don t drive up on the ramp with vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons Always close the gate/hatch on your trailer, even over short distances Follow signage and traffic regulations Keep children under supervision at all times Bring your recycling card (to Falkenberg s recycling centres) Use transparent sacks* Please ask on-site staff if you are uncertain about anything 2 Updated October 2015 *In order to ensure correct sorting and a safe work environment for our staff, we only accept waste in transparent sacks or open containers. If these instructions are not followed, you will be asked to repack the waste at the designated location at the recycling centre or to come back with correctly-packaged waste. 3 Asbestos As a private individual, you can dispose of asbestos at Sandladan in Falkenberg and Östra Hamnvägen in Varberg. You must enclose it in a plastic sack that is at least 0.2 mm thick and holds a maximum of 160 litres. The sack must be tightly sealed with tape and marked ASBESTOS and must be shown to staff before placing in the container. You may drop off a maximum of six sacks per visit. Since the staff at our recycling centres are not authorised to handle asbestos, you must do this yourself. Batteries Brushwood Small batteries under three kilos containing no acid can be placed in the red battery box Car batteries and other batteries containing acid should be placed in a separate container Batteries that are Ni-Fe go in Hazardous waste Server batteries go in Electrical scrap Pallet with asbestos (see directions regarding quantity above) Asbestos from companies. Certain hauliers and decontamination companies accept asbestos 4 Thick twigs and branches Logs up to 45 cm in diameter Stumps Please note! Remove all stones and soil Stone goes in Filling material Roots and bushes with roots contact staff The following goes in Compost: Hedge cuttings with twigs thinner than a pen Soil Bulky waste Upholstered furniture Mattresses Long PVC pipes Skis and poles as long as they are not metal Roof boxes Fibre glass, including boats, ceiling panels Large carpets Surfboards Wood with roofing felt (a few boards) The following goes in Iron scrap: Office chairs Car seats Uncertain about something? During the autumn months you can put windfalls in the designated container at several of our recycling centres. Corrugated cardboard Food packaging such as milk cartons and egg cartons, etc. should go with packaging material at the recycling station in your residential district Electrical scrap with batteries or cords (remove batteries and bulbs first) Falkenberg s recycling centres have a separate area for TVs and monitors The following go in Combustible waste: Styrofoam and plastic Thick brown cardboard tubes How to tell if it s corrugated cardboard! Split the card and look for the wavy air gap. 7

5 Filling material Concrete (not in sacks) Pottery, mugs and plates Drinking glasses Bowls Vases Bricks Stone Minerit boards Toilets (without lid) Sinks Tiles and clinker Thermos flasks; should be dismantled and sorted by material (many contain glass) For asphalt - contact an authorised contractor who deals with asphalt Fluorescent tubes Taped fluorescent tubes Remove packaging Light sources You can bring light sources such as: Light bulbs Low-energy bulbs LED bulbs Car or bicycle lamps Curved fluorescent tubes 8 Straight fluorescent tubes Fridges & freezers, etc. Hard plastic Straight fluorescent tubes go in the designated container (see below) Remove packaging Place large fridges and freezers and small fridges and freezers in the designated location Chest freezers go in a separate location Heat pumps, industrial fridges and industrial freezers Remove any food from fridges and freezers before taking to the recycling centre Uncertain about something? Windows in wooden frames can be broken up on site. Protective goggles and gloves are available to borrow. Windows with PCB joints, manufactured between 1956 and 1973, should be treated as Hazardous waste 12 Pressure-treated wood goes here, including telegraph poles and sleepers Pressuretreated or not? Cut into the wood slightly. Often green or brownish stain has penetrated some way into the wood. Stainless steel & aluminium Aluminium cans Stainless steel saucepans Sink units Shower cubicles with or without plastic (Not cubicles with glass; they go in Plate glass) How to tell if it s stainless steel/ aluminium! Check using a magnet. Stainless steel/aluminium is not magnetic. Textiles Textiles that cannot be re-used are utilised for new production of fabric. Parts of the fibres then become raw material for blankets and insulation, for example. The following can go in here: Clothing Shoes Tablecloths Curtains Rag rugs Sheets and pillow cases, towels, blankets and other household textiles The following go in Combustible waste: Worn-out shoes Carpets made of synthetic material Carpets with rubberised backing Stuffing for furniture Quilts and pillows 13

8 Items for reuse Do you have unwanted items that may be of use to someone? Tyres with rims from car Only accepted at Sandladan, Ullared and Östra Hamnvägen, where you can take a maximum of eight tyres with rims per household/year We do not accept commercial tyres such as lorry tyres and tractor tyres or tyres from companies Wheelbarrow wheels and bicycle wheels with rims go in Iron scrap Tyres without rims from car Wood White goods Untreated wood (including wood with wallpaper, paint and small metal objects such as nails, screws and handles attached) can go in here Larger metal objects must not be thrown in among the wood Pressure-treated wood should not go in here. If it is untreated wood combined with pressure-treated wood, it should go in the pressure-treated section Glass in doors and windows can be knocked out and placed in with Plate glass (protective goggles and gloves are available to borrow) Dishwashers Tumble dryers Washing machines Cookers Hot plates Kitchen fans go in the Metal container Microwave ovens go in Electrical scrap At the recycling centres at Östra Hamnvägen in Varberg and Sandladan in Falkenberg we accept: Household appliances and chinaware Pictures Furniture and mattresses Garden tools Everything must be clean and undamaged, so that it can be sold in a second-hand shop, where sales raise funds for charity.
