5 CONCERT HALL BAMBERG NICE QUIET SPOT Good acoustics: Everything has been thought of in the concert hall in Bamberg. And that was no easy task because good SOUND is dependent on a multitude of factors. Expanded natural graphite helps in providing the right audible levels to enhance the experience of your favorite concert. In 2009, the concert and congress hall in Bamberg got a new two story foyer. The home of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra Bavarian State Philharmonic now not only has a worthy architectural flagship but the expanded and renovated glass and steel construction also has a seamless Radiant Ceiling with a graphite core which provides pleasant indoor temperatures. The design is not satisfied with being merely functional. Instead, the plasterboard ceiling is integrated in an unusual but striking support structure. It protrudes freely into the room, is fitted with numerous recessed luminaires and curves upwards in the direction of the staircase. The top floor is also equipped with a seamless, plasterboard, graphite core Radiant Ceiling. At 4.15 meters, it cools under a special fire-retardant ceiling. The architectural design is complex: the ceiling follows the buildings contours internally with 50 different kidney-shaped curves. 5

7 BMW MUSEUM MUNICH PERFECTLY ROUNDED The wheel is not the only thing that s round: The company museum of car manufacturer BMW is every bit as round. So, it is a good thing that the construction material for the geometrical shapes, which are key to the building, make just that possible, and on top of that deliver a comfortable indoor climate. It took 4 years to completely renovate the listed BMW museum. When it reopened in 2008 it had been restored to its original 1973 state even though everything has changed! Now the ceilings have been reworked with ECOPHIT modified, perforated, smooth coated plasterboard elements. Just like their cars, the high tech element is not instantly visible, but you feel it immediately in the balanced indoor climate, in the summer and the winter. Visitors to the museum are led along the pedestrian walkway through the spiraling building. New exhibition spaces line the path. It is not only the floor which follows the oblique geometric shapes of the walkway, but also the planked Radiant Ceiling follows suit. Even the numbers add up. The thermal conductivity of the panels has improved by a factor of three thanks to ECOPHIT. 7

9 MARINA TOWERS DUBAI IN THE DESERT Everything about the Dubai Marina Towers is very high. Well, nearly everything, because the temperatures stay low. The ECOPHIT Radiant Ceilings are exceptionally economical so the only thing that s going up is the COMFORT. Skyscrapers soar several hundred meters into the air, one after the other. That is Dubai Marina. This new urban district of Dubai is already a very impressive sight, and it is planned to expand further over the next few years. The starting signal for construction sounded in 2003 with six modern towers having up to 37 floors which make up Marina Towers Dubai. Enormous skyscrapers are not the only things that climb high in the Persian Gulf: soaring temperatures turn air conditioning systems into indispensible energy guzzlers, or so it would seem. Proof that climate control systems can be environmentally friendly even at temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius lies in Radiant Ceilings equipped with ECOPHIT. The testing scenario: two identical rooms, two cooling systems. The first, a conventional air conditioning system, the second a metal cassette ceiling with ECOPHIT. 13 NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY SINGAPORE TYPICALLY TROPICAL In the Energy Research Institute at Nanyang University in Singapore, daily research is carried out into possibilities to increase the EFFICIENCY of energy systems. The ECOPHIT Radiant Ceilings in the office of the Energy Research Institute demonstrate how it should be done. Researchers, engineers and scientists in work together closely on the energy systems of tomorrow. They do not limit themselves amongst the horizons of their individual expertise but look for solutions that are international and interdisciplinary. One such example is ECOPHIT. It is installed in s headquarters in Clean Tech One and was developed about 14,000 kilometers away: in Germany. 14 THE RADIANT CEILING THE COOLING IS THE ONLY PART YOU DON T SEE Some things set limits. Anyone who has ever planned a building will know this. The same applies to everyone who has moved into a building. Heating and cooling systems are good examples of the type of components that rob freedom of design in a room. It is a different story when warmth or cooling comes directly from Radiant heating or cooling systems. Radiant Ceilings or ceiling sails provide free valuable space, minimize or eliminate unsightly components and increase architectural design freedom. ECOPHIT goes one step further: the Radiant Ceilings rely on expanded natural graphite into which a meander tube is embedded. This innovative material distributes temperature more evenly and quickly than conventional radiant ceiling systems. 15 RADIANT ENERGY THE SUN PRINCIPLE The sun produces energy both visible and invisible. The light we see is only a tiny part of the energy which reaches us from the sun. The majority of the energy which reaches earth comes to us not as light but as pure heat radiation. When the sun s radiant energy encounters an object or indeed a person, it creates WARMTH. Room air temperature When HEATING, the Radiant Ceilings give off energy into the room which warms bodies and other objects which it encounters. Room air is not directly heated, rather it is indirectly heated through temperature differences between objects. Nature seeks equilibrium. Room air temperature When COOLING, bodies and objects give their radiant heat back to the cooler ceiling. Warm air also rises, is cooled by the ceiling and flows back downwards. 15

16 VISUALIZATION OF A RADIANT CEILING ELEMENT To ensure that the radiant panels are not affected by non-conditioned spaces above the ceiling, INSULATION can be applied to the rear side. The CONNECTIONS are flexible and the ceiling elements are therefore easy to install. Connections for inlet and outlet are installed invisibly and allow various types of constructions. A MEANDER TUBE is embedded in the graphite panels fully surrounded by the graphite matrix. The ECOPHIT Activation Board conducts heat rapidly and uniformly due to the high thermal conductivity property of graphite, thereby activating the ceiling surface which distributes the radiant energy evenly into the room. 17 EXPANSION OF THE RAW MATERIAL BETTER CONDUCTIVITY, HIGHER PERFORMANCE The name says it all: ECOPHIT is based on natural graphite which is expanded in a refining process. This process causes the natural graphite to increase in volume making it soft and conformable. Thermal conductivity can be adjusted through mechanical compression. The natural material graphite consists of pure carbon layers lying parallel to each other. Warmth and cold are transported along these flakes. The expansion process increases the volume of the tiny graphite flakes by a factor of between 200 and 400. As a result, the density and the weight decrease. Through compression to panels, the thermal conductivity increases. Both characteristics can be controlled in a targeted way during production a benefit in the application with ECOPHIT. 17

Their experts have come to this conclusion after having examined the complete life cycle of the Deutsche Bank-Tower in Frankfurt. 20 HEATING AND COOLING WITH ECOPHIT EFFICIENCY IS THE KEY Costs and environmental guidelines are the most important questions in construction planning. The answer to both is: efficiency. 21 SYSTEMS COMPARISON SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN The performance capability of a product can best be seen when benchmarked with standard products. Two engineering firms have evaluated and compared the performance capability of ECOPHIT with that of a reference system without graphite. These are the savings: 55% electricity. This corresponds to the yearly consumption of about 1,900 detached family homes 67% heating and cooling energy. This corresponds to the heating energy for about 750 detached family homes 74% water per year. This corresponds to the contents of 22 Olympic sized swimming pools 89% less CO 2 per year as much as emitted by 6,000 cars, each driving 12,000 km Fact: Green Building Certification according to LEED (Platinum) and DGNB (Gold). Around 10,000 ECOPHIT Radiant Ceiling elements on a surface of about 17,000 square meters make their contribution towards these savings. 21

22 SYSTEMS AND APPLICATION WHICH CEILING SHOULD IT BE? A construction element that saves money and resources? Great. But whether a heating and cooling system really proves its worth is demonstrated by whether the planner is limited in scope or not. Or, even better: When it offers the planner new possibilities for space allocation and creates an opportunity for design flexibility. SEAMLESS CEILINGS make it difficult to realize what lies within. The surface consists of seam-sealed plasterboard panels whose existing low level of conductivity has been increased by the addition of granular expanded graphite. GRID CEILINGS have the advantage that ECOPHIT heating and cooling systems can be integrated in new as well as existing ceilings and it makes no difference which kind of ceiling surface or even which geometric form we are dealing with. The ceiling elements can always be distributed so as to achieve optimal heating and cooling results.
