The world's first and only steel panel radiator with serial flow, which provides up to 11 % energy-savings, while at the same time ensuring 100 % comfort at all operating points. A milestone of heating technology, precisely adapted to the requirements of the new standards and regulations as well as the improved insulation standards for new buildings and renovation. Give your business a real boost with therm-x2. For a clear competitive edge, complete customer satisfaction, less pricing pressure and more added value. 3
Functional problem in controlled operation. The weak points of standard steel panel radiator technology are demonstrated in this practical example. Space heating requirement Living space Area: 31.5 m² Ventilation heating consumption Ф V : Transmission heating demand Ф T : Total demand Ф HL, net : 508 W 1174 W 1682 W Radiator design acc. to DIN Heat demand Ф HL, net 1682 W Additional heating capacity Ф R,H 794 W* Rated heating load Ф HL 2476 W Operating point of the radiator A practical example that clearly illustrates the weak points of standard steel panel radiator technology today. 5 The problem. Correlation between water flow rate and output (type ). Heat output W W % 20 % 40 % 60 % 80 % 100 % 15 % Mass flow ratio m req./ m rat Conclusion: Because of the internal heat sources, in controlled operation 54 % of the maximum heat demand, and therefore only 36 % of the possible standard heat load, is required. Consequences: The radiator must reduce the flow rate to 15 %. The average surface temperature drops to well below 40 degrees. The user has the impression that the heating is defective or out of order. This results in a corresponding lack of comfort and unnecessary complaints. 5
The x2 solution to the problem: in series instead of in parallel. The x2 principle. Standard steel panel radiator technology with a triple advantage. The innovation with multiple competitive edge: significantly improved dynamics, outstanding comfort at every operating point and high energy efficiency. 6
The solution. While in the existing steel panel radiator technology, all of the panels are connected in parallel and therefore streamed at the same time, the therm-x2 uses a completely new, unique principle: serial flow-through. This means that the front panel is connected in series with the panels behind it; so the flow passes through the front panel first. In controlled operation, the front panel's output is completely sufficient and the downstream panel hardly heats up at all. Only as the output demand increases does it also contribute to rapidly heating the room with high convection output. 7
Significantly improved dynamics. The desired room temperature is reached much more quickly. Dynamic response Example: Type 22, height 600, length 1000 From idle state to the maximum heat output of the radiator at 100 % mass flow rate. Time in s Standard steel panel radiator 25 % shorter heating-up period. therm-x2 Standard steel panel radiator Valve fully open for 800 s Output = 1158 W (70 C / 55 C) T O after 200 s = 43.5 C T R after 800 s = 55 C Kermi therm-x2 steel panel radiators Valve fully open for 600 s Output = 1158 W (70 C / 55 C) T O after 200 s = 50 C T R after 600 s = 55 C Thanks to the x2 principle, the therm-x2 achieves its required heat output up to 25 % more quickly. T O = Average surface temperature T R = Return temperature m = 66.5 l/h * Source: Research report by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Hirschberg "Dynamic Response and Energy Expenditure of a Steel Panel Radiator with Panels Connected in Series". 8
up to 25 % shorter heatingup period up to 100 % higher radiation component up to 11 % energy saving Comparison of heating-up phases 10 Standard steel panel radiator therm-x2 Significantly improved dynamics, quick response and shorter heating-up period. The x2 principle of serial flow is ingenious and the result is unique in several ways. This is already clear from the dynamic heating process and the significantly shorter response time of the front panel. As the comparative example demonstrates, the therm-x2 leaves the standard steel panel radiator standing. The radiator requires 25 % less time to reach its maximum heat output Time in min. at 10 % mass flow rate W Significantly improved dynamics W The front panel can respond quickly W Up to 25 % shorter heating-up period for radiator W Room heats up more quickly 9
Maximum comfort at all times. Greatly increased radiation component for outstanding heating comfort. DIN EN requires the following with regard to the dynamic heating process: "For rooms with intermittent heating operation, a reheating factor must be determined in agreement with the user." Consequence: The heat output that has to be installed must be increased by the required reheating output. Result: The controlled operation takes place more frequently under partial load. This reduces the radiation component and therefore the comfort. Standard steel panel radiator In contrast, VDI 6030 demands: "In order to ensure optimal comfort at all times, the radiator should provide maximum radiated heat output, even at low flow rates in partial load mode." For example, in controlled operation at 20 % of the nominal mass flow rate (= approx. 65 % of the heat output of the radiator), the radiated heat output of the therm-x2 in the room is approx. 1.5 times higher for types 12 and 22 and 2 times higher for type 33 when compared to standard steel panel radiators. Radiated heat output therm-x2 Profile-V / -VM / -K, therm x2 Plan-V / -VM / -K radiation component Type 12 Type 20 Type 22 Type 30 Type 33 Standard steel panel radiator 20 % 35 % 20 % 20 % 10 % therm-x2 30 % 45 % 30 % 30 % 20 % Source: Research report from WSPLab, Dr.-Ing. 11 up to 25 % shorter heatingup period up to 100 % higher radiation component up to 11 % energy saving Kermi therm-x2 steel panel radiators W Maximum thermal comfort at all times, even in partial load mode W Significantly higher average surface temperature of the front panel W Increased radiation component = more heating comfort Example: Type , flow temperature approx. 50 C Time [min] Mass flow rate [%] Average surface temperature [ C] therm-x2 Standard steel panel radiator Ø [%] after approx. 40 approx after approx. 43 approx after approx. 45 approx Because of the additional heating load according to DIN EN that has to be factored into the design calculation, as well as the internal heat sources, the maximum radiator output requirement may only be required on around 10 days. This means that for 90 % 95 % of the heating period, controlled operation takes place at a partial load of between 10 % and 30 % of the mass flow rate. During this time, the average surface temperature decreases significantly. The result is a corresponding lack of comfort and complaints that take a great deal of time and expense to deal with. With therm-x2 the situation is completely different. A thermographic comparison clearly shows this: a significantly higher average surface temperature of the front panel. The radiation component is consequently up to 100 % higher. This means that the therm-x2 not only successfully counteracts the negative effects of DIN EN on the partial-load behaviour. Additionally, only the steel panel radiator that fulfils the requirements of VDI 6030 in every respect. This leads to a high degree of customer satisfaction due to a significant gain in feel-good warmth and comfort. 11
High heating efficiency. Innovative technology which effectively saves energy. DIN and DIN V describe the energy efficiency of all heating system components in the German Energy-Saving Ordinance (EnEV) certificate. Until now, only standard reference values have been used for radiators. Improved specific characteristic values have been a false indication until now. Shorter heating-up periods, a higher radiation component and lower radiation loss as well as the longer hot water path give the therm-x2 an energy efficiency that is unparalleled in the field of steel panel radiators. During controlled operation the rear panel is hardly heated at all. Due to the low heat output on the wall side, it performs a radiation shield function. All of this, in conjunction with factory preset valve inserts, leads to a reduction in energy costs of up to 11 %. Based on the expenditure figures currently specified in the DIN standard, use of therm-x2 for e c in conjunction with a P controller (design according to 1K or 2K) brings about a 0.03 improvement in expenditure, or 0.02 if a PI controller is used. The degrees of utilisation specified in DIN V also improve when therm-x2 is used. The value to be used for η c improves by 0.03 when a P controller is used (design according to 1K or 2K), or by 0.02 when a PI controller is used. With energy-savings of up to 11 %, the therm-x2 has a valuable positive influence on the building's energy efficiency which is decisive for the energy certificate. W High heating efficiency. W Reduction in heating costs W Effective contribution to protecting our environment 12
up to 25 % shorter heatingup period up to 100 % higher radiation component up to 11 % energy saving Comparison of annual primary energy requirements: old building, old building according to WSVO95, new building according to EnEV approx. 300 kwh/m²a approx. 100 kwh/m²a approx kwh/m²a old building old building (according to WSVO95) new building (according to EnEV 2014) Efficient energy-savings of up to 11 % with: x2-inside technology (up to 6 % energy-savings) W Faster heating-up period. The forced flow effects a shorter heating cycle, shorter operating times and the valve closes more quickly. W Higher radiation component in the room. Due to the higher average surface temperature of the front panel at every operating point. W Lower radiation loss at the outer surface. Due to the lower average surface temperature of the rear panel at every operating point. W Greater ΔT between flow and return. The hot water needs to pass a greater distance inside the radiator (different heat exchanger characteristics). This increases the energy yield, especially in partial load mode with lower mass flow rate and lower circulation and generation losses. k v -factory preset valves (up to 6% energy-savings) W k v -factory preset valves ensure more or less ideal hydraulic conditions in the heating system ex works. W Approximately 20 % of the pump drive current is also saved. 13
Evaluation of the x2 technology using actual measurements. Comparative measurements between therm-x2 and standard steel panel radiators W 1st measurement: heat pumps (flow 40 C) W 2nd measurement: condensing boiler (flow 55 C) W 3rd measurement: low-temperature boiler (flow 70 C) Measurement: heat pump Specified system temperatures: Flow (T v ): 40.0 C, Air (T L ): 20.0 C Standard steel panel radiator therm-x2 Δ Mass flow rate: 65±1 l/h 65±1 l/h - Standard volumetric flow: 123 l/h 123 l/h - Ratio m req. /m des. : 52 % 52 % - Flow temperature: 41.8 C 42.1 C - Return temperature: 31.8 C 30.5 C C (- 6 %) Average surface temp. front: 32.4 C 37.6 C C (+ 16 %) Average surface temp. rear: 33.1 C 30.1 C C (- 9 %) Radiation into the room Standard steel panel radiator therm-x2 Δ q = W/m² q = W/m² + 7 % q = E * C S * ( T ) Average surface temperatures of the front panel: Standard steel panel radiator = 32.4 C therm-x2 = 37.6 C Radiation exchange with wall / window q 12 = E * C 12 * [( Panel) T 4 ( T W.F ) 4 ] Standard steel panel radiator therm-x2 Δ q 12 = W/m² (wall) q 12 = W/m² - 20 % q 12 = W/m² (window) q 12 = W/m² - 17 % Average surface temperatures: Standard steel panel radiator = 33.1 C therm-x2 = 30.1 C Wall = 17.0 C Window = 14.0 C Formula symbols: q = Heat flow density [W/m²] C = Radiation exchange constant [W/m²K4] E = Emission ratio T = Average surface temperature [K] 14
Methodology Evaluation of the results is based on a momentary reading. To do this, a measuring point was accessed at the end of the heating phase. All calculations are based on this measuring point. The same measuring point was used for all heat sources / temperature levels. This enabled a one-to-one comparison of results. For the data shown, the differences amount to 9-10 %. The values for other calculation variants were somewhat smaller, but still approx %. The advantages of the therm-x2 are largely based on the fact that the high radiation component of the front panel becomes effective in the room. Static investigation with internal loads An internal load of 120 W is now continuously applied to the room, along the same lines as the static investigations of an empty room without internal loads. Before the completely coupled calculations were performed with room air flow, a building and system simulation was carried out. This will be used to investigate whether a savings potential can be detected for the x2 relative to the standard steel panel radiator. They are in the 5-10 % range. The average surface temperatures of the panels (room-side panel higher, wall-side panel lower) show the significant advantages of the therm-x2. 17
