3 4 Summary of the results and notes 4.1 Potential for savings Compared to convection heaters, radiant heaters provide the same comfort at low air temperatures. As the influence of heat radiation very much depends on the distance to the heater, a well thought-through arrangement of the heaters is necessary to maximise this effect. If it is possible, as shown in the picture, to install the heaters at the ceiling above frequently used areas (dining table, couch, etc.), temperatures can be reduced by 2 to 3 K without loss of comfort. This corresponds to energy savings of 20 to 30%. Quick heater control could also result in savings as this would allow for the increased heating of areas where persons stay. In these two cases, the projected actual value of the final energy consumption for heating the building with radiant heaters of DIRECTTECH and taking into account the EnEV average target temperature of 19 ºC is less than 60% of the theoretical target value according to EnEV when using gas thermal value technology. If the heaters are optimally positioned and used correctly, an actual consumption of final energy for heating and hot water generation of even less than 50% of the theoretical target value when using gas thermal value technology could be obtained in one case without making any compromises regarding comfort Jena Institute of Energy Technology, c/o Dr. Dieter Achilles Page3 of 5

4 4.2 Positive side effects Due to a lack of ventilation, humidity is generated which in turn increases the risk of mould in particular in houses which are not insulated. This risk can be significantly reduced if radiant heaters are used which dry the walls very well. Furthermore, transmission losses and thus energy consumption are reduced due to the fact that dry walls have a higher overall heat transfer resistance. Furthermore, air movements due to heating are lower if radiant heaters are used; thus less dust circulates. This allows for a more convenient and above all a healthier room climate. As infrared heat is also used for medical purposes, this aspect of healthy heating should also be taken into account. 4.4 Certification according to EnEV A primary energy performance certificate according to EnEV for electrical heaters can only be granted if the heaters are exclusively operated with green electricity (possible exception: passive houses) Jena Institute of Energy Technology, c/o Dr. Dieter Achilles Page4 of 5

5 5 Conclusion We can certify that the tested radiant heaters of DIRECTTECH have very good application qualities: A. In two practical cases 1 : proven final energy consumption for heating of less than 60% of the theoretical target consumption according to EnEV when using thermal gas value technology subject to a average target temperature of 19 ºC B. In one practical case 2 : proven final energy consumption for heating and hot water generation of less than 50% of the theoretical target consumption according to EnEV when using thermal gas value technology without making any compromises regarding comfort C. Very good drying properties for walls proven by parallel measurements in practice and in the laboratory D. Significantly lower circulation of dust compared to convection heaters proven by laboratory tests and physical contemplations These facts usually meet the EnEV requirements if only green electricity is used for the operation of the heaters.
