5 Introduction What is a GeoFurnace Heat Pump? The GeoFurnace heat pump is the central component of a highly efficient geothermal heating and cooling system capable of providing year-round environmental conditioning of your home or business. The heat pump system runs entirely on electrical power, the most flexible and available form of energy available today. The GeoFurnace heat pump can produce three to five units of energy for every unit it consumes ( COP ), without producing environmentally harmful emissions. A GeoFurnace heat pump system pumps or moves energy from one location to another. In the winter it pumps heat from the warm earth into your home or business. In the summer it removes the heat from your home or business and pumps it into the much cooler earth. Since it takes less energy to move heat than to create it, geothermal heat pump systems are far more efficient than any type of conventional heating or cooling system. Since geothermal heat pump systems do not use a combustion source or a noisy outdoor unit, they are very quiet and clean compared to conventional heating and cooling systems. Geothermal heat pump systems are the safest and most environmentally friendly HVAC system one can buy. Construction Quality GeoFurnace heat pumps are designed and built for long life, and ease of trouble free service. Cabinets are constructed with stainless steel and high quality fasteners. Easy to remove service panels are constructed with galvanized steel. Rubber mounted scroll compressors and blower motor, and sound deadening insulation within the heat pump cabinet ensure extremely quiet operation. The cupronickel heat exchangers are standard equipment on all models. The coaxial heat exchangers are insulated to reduce energy loss and corrosion. In addition, the insulation keeps the coil from forming condensation in low temperatures. Oversized refrigerant-to-air heat exchangers provide high efficiencies at low face air velocity. GeoFurnace heat pumps are designed and built to perform as specified over a very long service life in the extreme Northern and Southern climates. Economics GeoFurnace geothermal heat pump systems save money in ether heating or cooling mode and will produce domestic hot water when ever there is a need when the system is heating or cooling. GeoFurnace heat pump systems are significantly more energy efficient than most other heating or cooling systems on the market today. It has been documented that Geothermal Heat Pump systems can reduce heating costs by 50% to 70% and reduce your air conditioning costs 20% to 30%. The optional de-super heater can save you even more by providing up to 80% of typical residential domestic hot water needs. 5

11 Design Standards The GeoFurnace heat pump is an extended range, earth coupled energy extraction system that provides heating and cooling as well as domestic hot water heating. Engineering and quality controls are built into every GeoFurnace heat pump, so expected performance depends on proper application and correct installation. Open Loop Systems: are installed using a water well as the energy source to inject or extract heat from the water. Once the water passes through the GeoFurnace, the water is discharged from the system. The water well pump is used to transport the fluid from the well through the GeoFurnace. A solenoid valve controls the water demand while a flow controller controls the volume of water through the GeoFurnace. Closed Loop Systems: are installed in a horizontal or vertical configuration, or submerged in a pond or lake. The closed loop system consists of an underground heat exchanger constructed from high quality polyethylene or pex type A pipe. Pond or lake loops can be constructed of either stainless steel constructed heat exchangers or polyethylene. Horizontal Loops: are often considered when adequate land area is available. There are two types of Horizontal earth loop options when adequate ground moisture is available. A slinky pipe configuration of 800 feet of pipe is placed in an excavated trench, three feet wide, a minimum depth of eight feet, and minimum length of one hundred fifty feet for northern climates. When ground moisture is questioned, a configuration using 800 feet of pipe is placed in a single trench of four hundred feet in length at a minimum depth of eight feet, and a minimum width of six inches. One length of pipe and trench is required for each nominal ton of heat pump. Trenches must be spaced ten to twenty feet apart. (length and spacing of loops do depend on local soil conditions). Vertical Loops: are used if land surface is limited. Drilling equipment is used to bore 3 to 6 holes at depths of 175 feet to 275 feet per nominal ton of heat pump. Two or four high density polyethylene pipes, joined together with a U-bend fitting are inserted in the vertical bore hole. This is standard practice for residential installation. For commercial installation, to conserve on drilling costs and maximize loop field performance, a conductivity test is suggested for loop field design. Bore holes must be spaced 10 to 20 feet apart. Pond or Lake Loops: are very economical to install when a body of water is available. Stainless steel plate exchangers, coils of copper, or polyethylene pipe are placed on the bottom of pond or lake. From the popularity of pond and lake loops, the Slim Jim has become a favorite. The Slim Jim is a stainless steel heat exchanger that is ready to use. In most cases 1/4 to 1/2 acre of water surface, with a minimum depth of 8 feet is required per ton of heat pump. Dealer/Installer Requirements: Dealers and installers are responsible for the technical competence and qualification of their installers, and service technicians. All dealers, installers, and service technicians are required to attend a GeoFurnace training program before installing GeoFurnace equipment. It is strongly suggested that GeoFurnace dealers, installers, and technicians become an accredited International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) installer, to provide competency in the geothermal industry. Other training or experience may be approved by, and accepted by GeoFurnace Manufacturing at their discretion. In any case, the dealer, installer, or technician shall be responsible for the qualifications of themselves and any employees or subcontractors involved in the installation or service of any GeoFurnace equipment. In addition, it is the sole responsibility of the selling dealer to provide the owner with an Owners Manual and shall make the owner thoroughly familiar with all aspects of the operation and owner responsibility required maintenance, including the importance of filter changing, etc. Dealer shall also fully explain all aspects of the warranty. GeoFurnace Manufacturing, at their discretion, may from time to time require the dealer, installer, and technicians to undergo additional factory training and testing. Equipment Installation: Special care should be taken in locating GeoFurnace equipment. All units should be placed on a vibration absorbing pad, slightly larger than the base of the unit. All units should be placed in an indoor area where ambient temperatures will remain above 45 F and should be located in a way so piping, and ductwork or other permanently installed fixtures do not have to be removed for service and filter replacement. Special Note: All GeoFurnace equipment is designed for indoor installation only. Equipment is not CSA, UL, or ARI certified for outdoor applications. Such installation will void all warranties. 11
12 Design Standards NOTE: Always turn off main power before servicing or removing any panels. CAUTION: Before drilling any screws into cabinet, check that screws will not hit or penetrate internal parts or refrigeration lines. Loop Field Manifold: GeoFurnace recommends the use of a manifold that is located in a vault or the structure being conditioned for all closed earth loop field heat exchangers, in residential applications. Each loop pipe should have its own valve. This practice allows the installing contractor the ability to control all aspects of the installation. Purge the earth loop with the system pump. In addition, it allows technical diagnostics of the earth loop field if an issue may arise. Earth Loop Flow Center: GeoFurnace recommends the installation of a non-pressurized earth loop flow center in the installation of a closed earth loop system. The flow center allows the technician/installer to purge the earth loop pipes individually at any time, when the manifold is in the structure close to the flow center. The flow center must be wired to the heat pump s contactor. A special entrance hole is provided for the thermostat entrance hole. Wire should be connected to the terminals on the compressor side of the contactor. In the application of a combination unit, wire should be connected to labeled terminals (See wiring diagram on electric box cover). Electrical: all wiring, line and low voltage, should comply with the manufacture s recommendations, The National Electric Code, and all local codes and ordinances. Thermostat: make sure that the thermostat is a Geothermal Heat Pump thermostat with a reversing valve energized in the cooling mode. The thermostat should be located and installed according to the manufacture s instructions and recommendations. Thermostats most generally are installed 54 inches off the floor on an inside wall where they are not in the sun at anytime. De-Super Heater Package: The optional de-super heater package provides considerable operating cost savings by utilizing excess heat from the heat pump to help satisfy domestic hot water needs. The de-super heater is active whenever the heat pump is operating in either the heating or cooling mode. A thermostat monitors the incoming water temp, turning the pump off at 128 F. The de-super heater will provide domestic hot water at a very low cost in winter, no cost in the summer. De-super heater output is approximately 900 to 1000 Btu/hr per Nominal Ton of heat pump. De-Super Heater Piping: GeoFurnace recommends 5/8 or 3/4 copper pipe for the first 10 feet from the heat pump s inlet and outlet. Type A PEX pipe can be used from that point on to the water heater. A maximum separation between heat pump and water heater of 50 feet should be observed. All pipes to and from the heat pump should be insulated with 3/8 wall closed cell insulation. On Demand Domestic Hot Water: GeoFurnace offers this option on all heat pumps, and will produce hot water at any time the water heater calls for hot water. The installing contractor is responsible for pump and controls for this system. Electric Auxiliary Heat: allows for cost effective sizing of the heat pump, and provides emergency back-up heating. Electrical service is supplied separately from the main electrical panel. ECM Blower Motor: Electronically Commutated Motors substantially reduces operating cost and provides greater comfort in most applications. The ECM motor will ramp up and down as the restriction of air flow changes. If for any reason, the motor is unplugged, disconnect the power to the heat pump before re-plugging. 12

15 Design Standards Shown below is a typical installation of a water heater connected to a de-super heater package using a concentric fitting. This installation type is used on conventional glass lined water heaters but will not work on all water heaters. The concentric fitting is a tube in a tube configuration and lets the water flow in the water heater in the inner tube and out in the outer tube. When installing the concentric fitting, the water valve at the bottom of the water heater has to be removed and installed in a different location in order to be able to install the concentric fitting. 35 Product Information The GeoFurnace MTEX Series Logic Controlled System (ICM222) is a microprocessor-based printed circuit board. It is located in the unit control box for convenient accessibility. This control board is specially designed for the M series units. The board provides control of the unit as well as outputs for status modes, faults and diagnostics. Startup The unit will not operate until all inputs and safety controls are checked for normal conditions. Fault Retry & Diagnostics All faults are retried three times, with 5 minute delay between each attempt, before finally locking the unit out. 1. Blinks for high pressure switch 2. Blinks for low pressure switch 3. Blinks for flow switch Safety Controls The GeoFurnace MTEX Series control receives separate signals for a high pressure switch for safety, a low pressure switch to prevent loss/low refrigerant charge damage & a flow switch for freeze protection. Testing The GeoFurnace MTEX Series control allows service personnel to shorten timing delays for fast diagnostics. If jumper is set to no positions, timing is set to standard, if jumper is set to yes, position timing is reduced for service and startup. Flow Switch (Freeze Protection) Operation When the 24vac is applied to the y terminal, the control board monitors the flow switch input. When the flow switch senses water flow, the control board will energize the compressor contactor, and start the compressor, after the random start is over. If the flow switch is open, at start up, the control board will energize the compressor contactor for a minimum time period of 30 seconds, after 30 seconds, the control board will de-energize the compressor contactor and go into a lockout. The control board will not energize the compressor contactor unless the flow switch closes and the anti-short cycle time has expired. If the flow switch opens three times while the heat pump is operating within 1 hour, the control board will go into lockout and the fault indicator LED will energize. When the flow switch is open, or if in lockout mode, the status LED on the control board will blink three times. Condensation Overflow Protection GeoFurnace MTEX Series units come standard with a condensation sensor. If sensor is sensing condensation liquid the compressor will shut down until the water level reseeds. If the 24vac on the y terminal is removed, the control board will de-energize the compressor contactor and go into a 5 minute lockout. If the 24vac is reapplied to the y terminal again, the control board will not energize the compressor contactor until after the 5 minute lockout is over. High & Low Pressure Safety Operation When the 24vac is applied to the y terminal, the control board is monitoring the high & low pressure switch input to make sure that they are closed. The control board won t start the sequence unless the high & low pressure switch are closed. If the high & low pressure switch opens while the compressor contractor is energized, the control will deenergize the compressor contractor and go into a short lockout. The control board will not energize the compressor contractor unless the high or low pressure switch closes and the anti-short cycle time has expired. If the high or low pressure switch opens three times within 1 hour, the control board will go into manual lockout and the fault contact will energize. When the high or low pressure switch opens or if in lockout mode, the status LED on the control board will blink, one for high and two for low pressure switch. 35

67 Specifications Split System
68 Blank 7/22/
69 MS Specifications Split Systems Special Note The GeoFurnace MTex Series Split System is a ground coupled heat pump designed for a remote evaporator application. The installing contractor must provide and install a line set between the two units and a bi-directional expansion valve. The Split can be purchased as a complete package including the condenser and evaporator less line set, or the condenser unit separately. When the condenser unit is purchased separately, an A coil is used with an existing fan source. When selecting the correct sizing for an A coil for a split application, one needs to select a size larger than the rated size of the Split Condensing Unit. As a standard feature, the Split comes with a de-super heater. The de-super heater heats domestic water while the heat pump is operating in heating or cooling. This function is designed to remove 900 to 1000 Btu/ hr, per ton of heat pump, of super heated refrigerant directly from the compressor and direct it to the domestic hot water heater needs when there is a call for domestic hot water. The Split comes equipped with a circulating pump and built in thermostat to monitor the call for domestic hot water. Do not use pex pipe for plumbing the de-super heater to the water heater. Please refer to the Split installation manual for any additional information for proper installation. 69
