In the 1920s, architect Lilian Rice created a language for Rancho Santa Fe, writing poetry in red tiled roofs and shaded interior courtyards, adobe walls and arched doorways, influenced by the estates and villas of Spain. The style became synonymous with the village Covenant and The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. The gorgeous natural landscapes, the gently broken topography, the nearby mountains. No one with a sense of fitness, it seems to me, could violate these natural factors by creating anything that lacked simplicity in line and form and color. Lilian Rice Artesana derives its crisp, clean lines; its white facades accented in wood and stone; its tiled roofs and open-beam ceilings; and its arcaded walks and lush courtyards from Rice s timeless aesthetic. Interpreted with a modern eye it is transformed into a new vision for indoor-outdoor, resort-inspired living.
