3 1. General CAUTION Do not run engine while this heater is operating. This manual covers a Water Heater Kit, Part Numbers and -2, manufactured by Hobart Brothers Company, Ground Power Division, Troy, Ohio 45373, U.S.A. Refer to Figure 1 for illustration. The water heater kit is installed inside the enclosure of the generator set, and is connected to the cooling system of the diesel engine which drives the unit. Its purpose is to keep the coolant warm when the engine is shut down for extended periods of time in cold weather, and thus permit the engine to start more quickly. 2. Description The heater unit is mounted to the generator frame with a bracket and attaching hardware as illustrated in Figure 1. Hoses, clamps, and fittings connect the heater to the engine s cooling system: heater input to the engine water inlet from the engine block; heater output to the engine water pump housing. The heater element is connected to 120 VAC for or 240 VAC for , 50 or 60 cycle line current by plugging an extension cord into the weatherproof inlet (supplied with heater) that is mounted on the generator enclosure on the left side of the front canopy. A thermostat turns the heater element ON at 100º F and OFF at 120º F. Heated coolant is circulated throughout the cooling system by a thermal siphoning action. Mounted low in the system, a head pressure is maintained at the heater s intake and a simple one-way valve in the heater unit insures the direction of coolant flow. CAUTION Drain the engine coolant system before working on the heater. Afterwards, refill the cooling system and bleed at highest point to remove any air lock. CAUTION Do not operate this heater while the engine is running. 09/08/98 Page 3

The codes are in accordance with the Federal Supply Codes for Manufacturer s Cataloging Handbook H4-1, (CAGE CODES) and are arranged in numerical order. Vendor codes are inserted in the nomenclature column of the parts list directly following the item name and description.
