4 Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) for maximum air comfort and quality How Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) works The range of Silavent HRX-aQ MVHR units also offer options which include specialist Total Heat recovery exchangers to further improve air quality and negate the need for a condensation drain. By selecting this heat exchanger, the HRX-aQ will become an Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system, allowing optimal air comfort. What is Energy Recovery Ventilation? Heat that causes a change in temperature in an object is called sensible heat. For example, when an object is heated, its temperature rises as heat is added - this increase in heat is the sensible heat. Similarly, when heat is removed from an object and its temperature falls, the heat removed is also referred to as sensible heat. Without a heat exchanger, exhausted sensible heat in a dwelling would be lost. All pure substances in nature are able to change their state. Solids can become liquids (ice to water) and liquids can become gases (water to vapor) but changes such as these require the addition or removal of heat. The heat that causes these changes is called latent heat i.e. the energy that is used to add or subtract moisture from air. An Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) is a type of air-to-air heat exchanger that not only transfers sensible heat but also latent heat. Because both temperature and optimal levels of moisture are transferred, ERVs are considered Total Heat (or total Total Heat recovery exchanger enthalpy) devices. In comparison, a standard Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) can only transfer the sensible heat and therefore does not make use of the latent heat. Why select an Energy Recovery Ventilator? Clean, pre-warmed and OPTIMAL levels of moisture are transferred Incoming air is able to harmoniously react with the home environment for greater air comfort Ultimate control and integration Integration of the Bluebrain control ensures the maximum benefits of ERV are felt through simple control. Why Total Heat recovery exchangers are required A relative humidity (RH) of 0-60% is generally considered healthy for a domestic property, however normal household activities and the outside environment can significantly impact how a building performs and its humidity levels. As homes become more air tight, humidity levels and air quality can be negatively impacted; increasing the need for even more advanced ventilation systems. This can also be seen in poorly ventilated and highly populated developments such as apartment blocks and dwellings for communal living, including hotels, care homes and student accommodation. High levels of humidity can cause a build-up of moisture which may lead to health issues for occupants, as well as mould growth and the formation of condensation about the home. HRX-aQ Total Heat heat recovery exchangers are cleverly designed to maintain comfortable indoor moisture levels and prevent these problems from occurring. NOT NEEDED WITH ERV UNITS WINTER EXAMPLE During the colder winter months, the ERV system works in the same way as a HRV system, but has the added advantage of recovering some of the moisture from the extract airstream to avoid drying out the inside air to a level where it could become uncomfortable. SUMMER EXAMPLE During the summer months especially when the outside air is hotter and more humid than the inside air, the intake air transfers some of its sensible (temperature) heat to the colder exhaust air. At the same time, the intake air also transfers some of its moisture to the exhaust airstream. Because of this, the supply air will be cooler and drier than the outside air. Allows freedom in locating your ERV unit. Note: The moisture always moves from the air stream that is the most humid to the one that is the driest. Moisture key: Optimum The diagram above illustrates how the Total Heat recovery exchanger exhausts odours and contaminants whilst extracting waste heat and water vapour. 5 Advanced control Advanced control Increase value/speed (+) Decrease value/speed ( ) The HRX-aQ aims to revolutionise heat recovery by also including features such as wireless control, night time cooling, delay on timer, auto frost protection and intelligent summer bypass. Through advanced AMIE technology (Air Management for Indoor Environments), the Bluebrain controller not only offers simple pre-programmed functions, but also allows for straight forward commissioning. Flexible, intelligent control Commissioning made easier Engineered to include independent speed control, the HRX-aQ Bluebrain control cleverly allows more accurate commissioning through simple speed adjustment buttons. AMIE technology takes the hassle out of commissioning! Incorporates AMIE technology Intelligently manages air conditions Control functions Dirty filter indicator BMS capabilities Digital humidity control aiding homeowner comfort Through advanced AMIE technology, unlike conventional humidity sensors, the HRX-aQ controller will enable occupants to have direct control over managing the humidity levels in their home - to suit personal comfort levels. By accurately measuring air humidity, the HRX-aQ s extract speed automatically changes from background to boost as the level of humidity increases, thereby providing optimal ventilation performance. Advanced bypass control Perfect for night time cooling or during warmer periods, the HRX-aQ controller detects when the air temperature reaches a pre-set level and intelligently activates the bypass mechanism; allowing in cooler, fresh and filtered air. The bypass is also programmable by time, enabling occupants to activate the mechanism Set temperature trigger point (TEMP) Set date and time (DAY) Set humidity trigger point (HUM) Adjust summer bypass (BYPASS) Copy program (COPY) Select and edit program (PROG) Escape function (ESC) Save function (SET) For more details on the control features, please see pages 6-7. Automated filter maintenance and replacement reminders Ease of maintenance and filter replacement is an important consideration when specifying MVHR not only to ensure performance of the unit is maximised and air quality maintained, but also for peace of mind for both the client and occupants. The HRX-aQ Bluebrain control will therefore remove this concern by providing helpful maintenance reminders for cleaning its filters. Building Management Systems (BMS) The HRX-aQ controller is intelligently constructed to be compatible with Building Management Systems. It incorporates volt free contacts for fault and filter cleaning indication on the Building Management System. 8 Intelligent Air Solutions Intelligent Air Solutions 9

8 Whisper quiet Whisper quiet One of the most important considerations in modern MVHR design is noise and its impact on a dwelling s occupants. With background (normal) ventilation down to db(a) (typically no louder than a whisper), the HRX-aQ is the quietest Silavent MVHR unit in the market. Manufactured from high density EPP material (expanded 00mm DEEP MODELS polypropylene) for optimum sound reduction, combined with integral flow straighteners for reduced internal resistance, the highly efficient HRX-aQ ensures that break out and induct noise is minimised. Designed to lower noise The inclusion of rectangular socket connections in the unit not only removes the need for flexible duct connectors, but further reduces the likelihood of invasive noise through improved system performance. 0mm DEEP MODELS attenuation solutions For acoustic attenuation within the duct system itself, look to install Domus rigid duct sound attenuators, which lower sound noise by up to 55dB. Additionally, Domus Thermal duct insulation is designed specifically to improve the thermal insulation of rigid ducting. 10 Complying with Building Regulations Best practice design and installation Domestic ventilation Note: a. In addition, the minimum ventilation rates should be no less than 0. l/s per m of internal floor area (this includes all floors, e.g. for a two-storey building, add the ground and first floor areas). b. This is based on two occupants in the main bedroom and a single occupant in all other bedrooms. This should be used as the default value. If a greater level of occupancy is expected, add l/s per occupant. Student accommodation and care homes Approved Document Part L of Building Regulations mainly focuses on the assessment of energy performance and the calculation tool used for non-domestic buildings (the Simplified Building Energy Model or as otherwise known, SBEM). SBEM makes the following air flow assumptions: Bathroom (extract) Bathroom (supply) Minimum rate Minimum high rate Minimum low rate Kitchen 0 l/s adjacent to hob, l/s Total extract rate should or 60 l/s elsewhere be at least the whole dwelling ventilation rate given in the table below. Utility Room 0 l/s 8 l/s Bathroom 5 l/s 8 l/s Sanitary 6 l/s 6 l/s Accommodation l/s 0 l/s 5 Whole dwelling ventilation rate a.b. (l/s) STUDENT ACCOMMODATION REQUIRES TABLE.a - EXTRACT VENTILATION RATES ROOM INTERMITTENT EXTRACT CONTINUOUS EXTRACT TABLE.b - WHOLE DWELLING VENTILATION RATES NUMBER OF BEDROOMS IN DWELLING Bathroom (extract) Bathroom (supply) CARE HOMES REQUIRE l/s 0 l/s Design of continuous mechanical supply and extract with heat recovery (MVHR) systems Continuous mechanical supply and extract with heat recovery (MVHR) (also known as system ), is an effective way of balancing indoor air levels for a healthier living environment. Determining air flow rates* Step For any design air permeability, identify the whole dwelling ventilation rate from Table.b. Where the designed air permeability is intended to be leakier than 5m³/h.m² at 50 Pa, allow for infiltration in all dwelling types by subtracting from the whole dwelling ventilation supply rate, as listed in table.b: 0.0l/s.m³ x gross internal volume of the dwelling s heated space (m³) - however review Building Regulations cautionary advice in sec 5.0. Step Calculate the whole dwelling extract ventilation rate by adding-up the individual room rates for a minimum extract rate, from Table.a. The required extract rates Step The maximum whole dwelling extract ventilation rate (i.e. the boost rate) should be at least the greater of steps and. The maximum individual room extract rates should be at least those listed in Table.a for the minimum high rate. The minimum whole dwelling supply ventilation rate should be at least the whole dwelling ventilation rate found in Step. *Ref pg 9 of 00 Building Regulations. The position of supply or extract valves As detailed in the NHBC specification, you should ensure that air valves are appropriately specified for wall or ceiling locations, in addition to supply or extract. To enable supply and extract ventilation within a room, low velocity air valves should be positioned on the opposite side of the room to internal door openings. These should be positioned no closer than 00mm to walls when located on a ceiling and no more than 00mm from the ceiling when located on a wall. Whilst extraction air valves positioned in kitchens, should be a minimum of 600mm away from hobs. To aid homeowner comfort and avoid drafts, the position of air valves should take into account the location of tall furniture, seating and sleeping areas. If installing linear grilles, do not site them over doorways, as the supply air is not likely to ventilate the rooms correctly. Air transfer To ensure sufficient transfer of air throughout the dwelling, there should be a minimum gap of 0mm between the underneath of the door and the fitted flooring. If installing floorboards (or other similar surfaces) or there is no flooring in place, it is recommended making an undercut of 0mm under the door frame. Noise Any continuously running fans should be quiet enough so as not to discourage their use by occupants. By incorporating high quality Domus sound attenuators, as well as correctly installing the system, noise will be minimised. Duct and insulation To minimise pressure losses and air leakage, specify a high quality duct system, such as the Domus duct range and ensure installers are BPEC accredited to fit and commission an MVHR system. 00 Building Regulations demands duct insulation such as Domus Thermal, must be the equivalent of 5mm at 0.0 W/ (m.k) thermal conductivity, equating to a minimum thermal resistance of 0.65 K/W per m². In addition, the insulation also requires a continuous vapour barrier when insulating the duct between the MVHR unit and external terminals. Siting the MVHR unit: Position the MVHR unit as close to the external terminals as possible to minimise the duct runs and hence resistance within the system. Access to filters should be considered for easy maintenance. Further recommendations on best practice MVHR design and installation is also listed in the 00 Building Regulations, CIBSE guide, B 005 and NHBC Specification, 06.
