4 ECHANGE PLATE TYPE HEAT ECHANGERS Since developed in 1953, HISAKA Plate Heat Exchangers have been widely used in almost all industrial fields due to the compact design and the high heat transfer efficiency. We can offer a wide range of standard heat exchanges from 0.18m 2 up to 2,500m 2 in total heat transfer area to meet the diversified and individual needs. Fundamental construction Corrosion resistant thin plates of stainless steel, titanium etc., are pressformed into heat transfer plates. A seal gasket is attached onto each plate. These plates are suspended from guide bar and bolted together between a fixed frame and a movable frame. Constant spacing between the plates allow the fluid to flow through. The inlet and outlet connections are fixed onto either the fixed frame or the movable frame. Heat transfer plates Each heat transfer plate is corrugated to various patterns to increase its strength and heat transfer area. Furthermore, the corrugation creates high turbulence and thereby achieve high heat transfer coefficient. The plate is provided with passage hole on each corner. Each plate is tightsealed with a gasket fitted in its peripheral groove. Flow passage The plates are divided into Aplate and Bplate, and a passage is formed between these plates. The high temperature fluid flows alternately and in the opposite direction of the other fluid. Thus high efficient transfer of heat is achieved through these plates. Aplate when reversed would become Bplate. As such only one type of plate can be used as Aplate and Bplate for most models. 03

Gasket materials : NBR, EPDM, IIR FPM, Silicone, T.C.G, etc. Less required installation area The lightweight and compact construction reduces the required installation space and the weight to 1/4 and 1/3 of multitube type heat exchanger respectively. In addition, lightweight and thin heating plate with less liquidhold facilitates the installation work. The plate type can be disassembled for cleaning without isolating from main line, while the multitube type needs a additional space for removal of the tubes. High performance The overall heat transfer coefficient (Uvalue) ranges from 4,000 to 9,000 W(m 2 ºC)in water application, since the plates corrugation provides high turbulent flow. This is one of the reason why plate heat exchanger is so excellent in heat transfer coefficient. In addition, this eddy flow also acts to prevent scales from generating on the plate surface. Prevention of liquid intermixing Special consideration is taken into the gasket so as to protect it from direct attack by liquid. Furthermore, the gasket is of doubleseal type so as to permit liquid draining outside the exchanger even in the case of liquid leak caused by its deterioration. Effective use of inletoutlet temperature difference up to its extreme limit The construction which permits heatexchanging in perfect counter flow with very high heat transfer efficiency makes it possible to utilize the difference between hot fluid and cold fluid up to 1ºC and less. Easy change of required capacity According to change of the treating capacity, the heat transfer surface area can be incremented/decremented by unscrewing the plate clamping bolts and increasing or reducing the number of plates. Steam available for use as heat source The use of synthetic rubber gasket of special composition permits to use steam as heat source, i.e operating temperature range up to 180 ºC maximum. Minimum heat radiation The gasket acts to shield heat radiation from the vertical and horizontal side of each plate. Heat is only radiated slightly from the finned edges of this plate. In addition, the plate front and rear in contact with the frame surface via air layer minimizes heat radiation. This heat radiation is normally less than 1% of the heating value. 04

6 PLATE TYPE PLATES FOR HISAKA PLATE TYPE HEAT ECHANGERS The plates are specially selected from various patterns so as to achieve optimum area and cost effective heat exchanger for each unit. These plates can be classified into three main types, namely. 1. "Herringbone pattern" such as L, U, R, and S 2. "Wash board pattern "such as E, and F 3. "Special wave pattern" such as G, and Y 1. Herringbone pattern The herringbone design in the L series had corrugations with pitch which are rough and deep. In S series, the pitch are the fine and shallow, hence L series are used in application where low NTU is required, and S series are best suited for high NTU application. U/Rtype is in between L type and S type. Hot temp inhot temp out NTU = LMTD NTU of 1.5 and less is generally referred to as low NTU, and 3.0 and above is considered as high NTU L series U / R series S series Even in the same series, the heat transfer characteristics of plate differs depending on angle. Shallow angle is suited to high NTU, while steep angle to low NTU. When the plates corrugated in shallow and steep angles are arranged together in a unit, intermediate thermal characteristics can be achieved. Shallow Angle Steep Angle Mixed Arrengement 2. Wash board pattern This type of plate has less metal to metal contact and is normally applied to fluid containing fibers or sludge, F series are mainly used in the food industry, whereas E series are used more conventional application, the sterilizer series would be referred to later. 3. Special pattern G series was developed for the transfer of fluid containing much slurry, Y series is used exclusively for vapor condensation. 7 GASKET FOR HISAKA PLATE TYPE HEAT ECHANGERS Features 1. Universal gaskets Plate Heat Exchangers are used in almost all process industry, as such the gaskets are specifically selected based on the operating condition of the fluid. A wide range of gaskets are available for HJSAKA Plate Heat Exchangers, such as NBR, EPDM, IIR, FPM, Silicon, etc. Special Hisaka (S1) glue shall be applied for bonding 2. SlitIn gaskets These plate gaskets do not need adhesive. The slitin gasket is normally recommended for those applications where frequent replacement of the gasket is required. Further, without the adhesives, odor is reduced. there is no adhesives odor for Food application. 3. PTFE cushion gasket (T.C.G) Though our own development, HISAKA pioneered the use of PTFE cushion gaskets for the Plate Heat Exchanger. It is normally used in applications where conventional synthetic rubber would have limitations due to the corrosiveness of the fluid being handled. With this new development, the Plate Heat Exchangers can be applied in much wider field than before due to the chemical resistance and the durability of PTFE. Special double adhesive tape shall be applied for bonding Features 1. Excellent chemical resistance against most chemical especially organic solvent. 2. Due to the elastic center core of the T.C.G gasket, it does not require strong tightening torque during the assembly of the unit. Thus reducing the chances of plate deformation due to over tightening. 3. T.C.G gasket can be used for one side only, if the noncorrosive fluid is running in the other side where conventional gasket can be used. 14 APPLICATION HISAKA JUMBO PLATE HEAT ECHANGER 5,000m 3 /h by single unit U100 Series Recently, in Central Cooling System required capacity of water for cooling of process equipment is becoming very large. To cope with this trend, HISAKA has developed Ul00 series Plate Heat Exchangers having its connection nozzle diameter of 500mm, which is applicable for flowrate up to 5000 m 3 /h by single unit. The number of units to be connected in parallel in Central Cooling System can be reduced, thus installation space and cost can be saved. 15 U100 Series Plates HISAKA use one of the largest Press Machines in the world to manufacture the U100 series plates. The 40,000 tons giant press machine allows the U100 series Jumbo size plate to be manufactured with the following unique features. Flexible Design * Plate length, several lengths available. * Corrugation Angle, 30º, 45º, 60º and their mixed combination. Thermal length of U100 plates are adjustable by its dimensional length and corrugation angles. By having corrugation angle of 45º, more compact design can be achieved rather than mixed combination of 30º and 60º only. By adjusting the plate thermal lengths to the required thermal condition, the heat transfer surface area can be optimized, thus reducing the cost of the Plate Heat Exchanger. Less Fouling * Flat area near port holes eliminate fouling at opposite corner of plates. Large flow goes through the flat area to the opposite corner of heat transfer area. This provides even flow distribution at entire surface areas which brings efficient heat transfer and eliminate fouling deposit. Unique Corrugation * Vertical corrugation also helps even flow distribution. * Horizontal corrugation eliminate plate's bending. (Photo shows the very large plate still rigid when handled). This makes maintenance work easy. U100 U130 To expect long periods continuous operation for seawater cooling application, we recommend: 1) Sea water filter with opening of 3mm or less (for U100 series) is recommended. 2) Electrolysis / Chlorine dozing is recommendable to be free from clogging of mussels and marine growth. If it were not available, we would advise alternative ways depending on site condition. 3) Periodical CIP cleaning without disassemble heat exchanger, is recommendable. 16 WELD WELDED PLATE HEAT ECHANGERWHE High heat transfer coefficiency owing to uniform distribution of flow to entire heat transfer is by special plate's pattern. A couple of plates is laser welded with oring at port holes between the Plates, thus WHE can be used for higher pressure by two times to conventional Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE). Chemical resistance T.C.G. oring and synthetic rubber are selectively used. Nozzle pitch dimensions of WHE are same to those of following PHEs WH40 = S40 W50 = U40 W90 = U90 Therefore, PHEs can be replaced to WHE without changing location of connection pipes for heat exchangers. 18 CONDENSER PLATE TYPE CONDENSER Plate Type Condenser HISAKA developed the plate for exclusive application to vapor condensing in large volume. HISAKA plate type condenser of lightweight and compact construction has the heat transfer performance of 2 to 3 times as high as the conventional multitube type and, in addition, their required installation space and weight are respectively 1/2 to 1/3 of the multitube type. Corrosion resistant metal such as stainless steel, titanium, High Nickel alloy, etc. are selectively available as the plate material. Y80 Series Advantages 1. Heat transfer coefficiency is about 2 times as high as that of multitube type. The condensing surface is always secured and the heat transfer coefficient is improved because condensed drain is immediately discharged to outside. 2. To reduce more vapor pressure drop than the conventional plate type, special consideration is taken in combination of the vapor line plates and the cooling water line plates. 3. Cooling water consumption equivalent to about half of that in conventional type. 4. The use of T.C.G gasket on the vapor and cooling media expands the application to wide field. 5. Easy cleaning and inspection of plates. 6. Easy change of the condensing capacity by increasing or reducing the number of plates. 7. Because of its inlet side passage holes and outlet side holes which are located at same side, the vapor plate can be applied to not only an total condenser but also to cooler condenser intended for vapor which contains noncondensive gas. 19 G MULTI CAP PLATE MULTI GAP For Slurry Containing Liquids G21 provide plates clearance of 10mm for both hot and cold sides, so that heat regeneration can be performed between hot and cold slurry. Mixed plate arrangement between G21 & G22 (called G23), gives biggest plate clearance of 20 mm at one side, which is available for large size particle. G plate provides excellent performance for particle containing liquid, such as slurry (PVC, latex.), sludge (quenching oil, plating solution, crystal (sodium hypochlorite, sodium alminate, etc.) G series plates have bigger forming depth. Larger corrugation pitch and less metal to metal contact points, comparing to conventional plates, which are keys of better performance for slurry, sludge and crystal containing liquid. 21 FEATURES Of HISAKA PLATE HEAT ECHANGERS FOR HVAC APPLICATION ECHANGE HISAKA SSeries Plate is especially wellsuited for HYAC applications involving large temperature changes, coupled with close temperature approaches (HIGH NTU APPLICATION), by single pass plate's arrangement. Recently, NTU designed for HVAC application is becoming higher and higher. By adopting large temperature change between inlet and outlet, circulating flow rate can be reduced. The following shows the difference in required circulating secondary flow rate for the duty of 1000RT. 14 C 12 C 13 C NTU=(147)/1=7 Required flow rate:432m 3 /h 7 C 6 C Since the secondary water is transferred to long distance through pipes and fittings in the circulation loop between plate heat exchanger and airhandling units, smaller flow rate allows to use smaller size of pumps, pipes and fittings, which makes great saving on such initial cost, as well as pump running cost (lower electricity consumption). 11 C NTU=(127)/1=5 Required flow rate:605m 3 /h 7 C 6 C Single Pass allows to arrange all inlet and outlet connection at fixed frame only. HIGH PRESSURE RATING gives complete water tightness under high operating pressure. To prove water tightness, all the heat exchangers are tested before the shipment from our factory, at the specified test pressure in one side. The other side is open to atmosphere so that it is tested under the biggest different pressure. 2. 22 MAINTENANCE MAINTENANCE Cleaning If the exchanging performance deteriorates, the plate surface must be cleaned. The performance decrement can be just judged by checking the operating temperature and pressure drop. It is recommended to predetermine a proper cleaning interval according to actual operating condition. 1. Open cleaning method The plates pack is disassembled and brushed. 2.
