5 Q5. Compared to five years ago, how would you describe the frequency of your recycling activities? Q5 Frequency of recycling Number Percent More frequently % Somewhat frequently % Same % Less frequently % Not sure % Q5a. Why are you recycling more? Is it because Q5a Why recycling more Number Percent Curbside recycling is now available % I now have to pay for the amount of trash I set out, and can recycle as much as I want for free % My recycling is now being collected in a wheeled tote instead of a bin % I m now using a drop-off recycling facility % I now utilize to learn where I can drop off items to be recycled % Other % None chosen % Total 156 ETC Institute (2013) Page 5
6 Q5a. Other Q5 Other Limitations on amount of waste that can be picked up each week curbside. I can recycle glass through Ripple Glass drop off. Own a house that has curbside recycling; previous apartment complex did not. It is easy!! I don't have to separate things so much. I am INCREASINGLY AWARE of how important it is to our planet; recycling information and facilities are more available. I am increasingly aware of the impact on our planet. Glass recycling is available and it has made a big difference in the amount of trash we have. I find it a more important and time-worthy activity than I did previously. To help conserve resources. Working for Johnson County has inspired more recycling in our home. More aware of what all I can recycle. Set up systems at home. Because it is pushed at work...if it easy I am not against doing it. I'm more environmentally conscious. We have had curbside recycling for more than 5 years. There are lots of places to recycle items at work now compared to 5 years ago. More awareness. Awareness! Just more aware and concerned about the environment and realize how much is recyclable versus trash. I am more knowledgeable. Hazardous waste drop offs available. More aware of services available. Ease of access at the university. I understand the impact and importance of recycling on the earth. Ripple Glass Recycling Drop Off. I take some items to work and recycle them. Gaining additional understanding of what can be recycled. I am composting at home. ETC Institute (2013) Page 6
7 Q6. What prevents you from recycling or recycling more than you currently do? Q6 Prevents you from recycling Number Percent Nothing I recycle everything possible % I do not think it is necessary to recycle % Recycling takes too much time % I do not know what I can recycle % Curbside recycling is not available % I do not know where to take materials % Recycling takes up too much room % I don t know where to find recycling information % Inconvenient locations and times % It is too much work or not physically able % Other % None chosen % Total 153 ETC Institute (2013) Page 7
8 Q6. Other Q6 Other Not sure how to recycle household batteries. Government BS. You know it is a money loser and you don't care. Stop being part of the problem. I can't recycle glass curbside. Our curbside recycling is limited, and we have disabilities that prevent us from using the large centrally located recycle containers. Packaging, such as cellophane/foam is difficult to collect and recycle; batteries are hugely inconvenient to recycle. Electronics recycling should be made easier, more frequent, and more accessible. Being able to recycle glass and plastic curbside would be a huge help. The only recycling that I don't do is composting. I don't do it and I don't plan to do it. It sort of sickens me to have that garbage in my yard, and I am older and it is too physically demanding to try to use a composter in my yard. There are some items (styrofoam, tetra packs) which are difficult to recycle. Glass should be included in curbside pickup. It is a pain and uses more gas to take it to the drop-off. I have always recycled as much as possible, even if I have to take the items someplace to do so. Not everything can be recycled. I don't haul my styrofoam all the way to a center or other things, like batteries. I cannot recycle glass products curbside. It takes up space in my house and garage that we do not have. Yard waste being picked up for bulk composting. Remaining recyclable items are used too sporadically to save in a quantity worthy of the gas it would take to get them to a recycling drop-off spot. There is no curbside service for glass and no community composting site. Household hazardous waste--i cannot recycle this by bicycle or on the bus, nor am I sure when and where I could with a car. Need this to be more convenient; I watch my neighbors put so much hazardous material in trash and even storm drains. ETC Institute (2013) Page 8
