6 Public Realm Elements for Residential Community Elements of public realm include curbing, street-trees, paving, sidewalks, benches and seating, planters, well-designed lighting, neighborhood identity flags. For a housing unit this may include a welldesigned front yard, entry walk, a stoop, a porch and a front-entry.

21 LEED-ND a rating system by USGBC for Neighborhood Developments Promulgated in final form in 2007 Has five major categories of ratings We will look briefly at Category III dealing with Compact, Complete & Connected Neighborhoods The full text of the LEED-ND is available on the USGBC webpage

22 Compact, Complete & Connected Neighborhoods Compact Development including Transit-oriented compactness Diversity of Uses - inclusive of retail, office etc. Housing diversity - different typologies including live/work units, accessory units like apartments over garages etc. Locating and designing buildings to shape walkable streets Street & pedestrian network

Structural protection - the damaging effects of winds, fire, hail, heavy rains, ultraviolet radiation, and foot traffic are minimized Ecological improvements - one square foot of green-leaf surface supplies enough oxygen, through photosynthesis, to supply one person s requirements for an entire year

51 Passive Orientation for housing Placing the building footprint in a manner to take advantage of natural cooling breezes is one way to reduce the need for mechanical cooling which of course uses up energy Shading devices also contribute to lowering the need for cooling energy

59 Use of Renewable Materials wood

60 Renewable Building Materials Renewable has typically meant materials like wood which can be replenished by replanting forests 50 % of the Wood used in a LEED program must be FSC certified. FSC is the Forest Stewardship Council.

61 Renewable Building Materials Certified Wood - must use a min. 50% of wood based materials certified in accordance with the FSC guidelines for wood building components including structural framing and general dimensional framing, flooring, finishes and furnishings.

62 Certification of Wood source This effort was originally started to show communities in developing countries that there was a concern amongst industrialized nations for how well forests were being protected and managed. Forest certification requires that landowners and manufacturers voluntarily invite third-party auditors to certify their practices meet internationally recognized standards for responsible forest management.
