J U N E E D I T I O N With a happy heart I turn the reins to this great club over to our new president, Maureen Adams. It has been two great years. The members of this club are fabulous with their energy, enthusiasm and willingness to get involved in so many ways, from participating in junior and senior garden-related workshops to creating an amazing holiday house tour with all the landscaping and learning in between. May you all have a great summer and come back in September with stories to share of your gardens or of those you have seen. Remember to respect insects as they feed us all in one way or another. Most importantly, keep having fun! Always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder. E.B. White Lelia JUNE Calendar Lightkeepers Garden Maintenance: every other Wednesday Historical Society Garden Maintenance: every other Saturday 7 Executive Board Meeting: Lightkeepers Cottage, 9:30 a.m. Hostesses: Roberts, Dillon, Chace, Meers 9 Senior Center: Wilcutt Commons, 91 Sohier Street, 1:30-2:30 p.m. In this, my last newsletter, I want to say thank you to all of you who have contributed material these past 4 years, to all who have read the newsletter, to Mary Eisenhaure for editing it each month so that it all makes sense, to Barbara Canney for volunteering to take on the task of producing the newsletter for the next 2 years, and most of all, to all of you who have been supportive with encouragement and compliments. You all were my inspiration - I couldn t have done it without you. Three years ago I moved into an apartment in the city and terribly missed having a garden of my own. Producing the newsletter has allowed me to stay close to gardening in a different but fulfilling way. For this I am grateful. During these past 4 years I have seen firsthand the passion so many of our members have for this club, the attention to detail and the extraordinary efforts by everyone to come together to assure every event flows seamlessly and every member is included who wants to be included. I have witnessed the reverence paid to founding and other long standing members by younger members and a deep commitment by all to promote interest in gardening, horticulture and conservation through the generous sharing of knowledge. I have gained such an appreciation for you members, so it is with sadness that I pass on this job to Barbara and lose this close connection to the club, but I look forward to contributing my efforts in other garden club endeavors. I am proud to walk amongst you. Again, thank you. Pat C. Newsletter Editor: Pat Cammett the COMMUNITY GARDEN CLUB of Cohasset Photo credit: Debbie Jenks pcamme@gmail.com

Yes, spring has sprung as documented in May in photographs by Barbara Canny of finches at her feeder, and by Debbie Jenks at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.

I Love Butterflies by Debbie Jenks I love butterflies. Well, who doesn t? But in 2014 I realized that I had seen very few in recent years, especially the Monarch butterfly, whose numbers have decreased dramatically. My last Monarch sighting was the summer of So, I decided to create a garden devoted to plants that host and feed butterflies. In the fall of 2014 I chose the sunniest spot on my property and began by preparing the soil and installing several plants acquired at end-of-season-sale prices: black-eyed susan, milkweed, purple cone flower, salvia. The following spring I was delighted to find that those record February snows had nurtured the plants; all but one survived the winter and most of them had spread. Over the 2015 gardening season I filled up the rest of the garden an elongated triangle 6 feet at the base and about 20 feet long with such annuals and perennials as alyssum, aster, bee balm, coreopsis, butterfly bush, shasta daisy, tall phlox, zinnias, and more; provided water via butterflies preferred method, a little muddy puddle; and wire cages to deter the deer. And I couldn t resist adding the bird bath on a cairn at the apex of the garden. It has been such fun watching the plants come into flower and host at least 11 types of butterflies, including the Monarch pictured here. I m so pleased with the results that I foresee adding significantly to it this season and in years to come.

Wilcutt Commons Before and After The landscaping improvements to Wilcutt Commons by our club are a perfect example of what I mentioned on page 1 of the passion so many of our members have for this club, the attention to detail and the extraordinary efforts by everyone to come together to accomplish something so beautiful and so impactful to our community. 6 Thank You from Jan Todd As our garden club year draws to its conclusion, I d like to thank those members who volunteered to bag and to plant 750 narcissi at Willcutt Commons, Cohasset s senior center, last November. The money our club had been awarded by the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, earmarked for bulbs, was used to purchase four varieties. Naturalizing capability, time and length of bloom, size, and color were considered in making a selection. Bloom started in March with Rijnveld s Early Sensation, noted as being able to withstand surprise snowfalls, a worthy quality for a New England planting. Then in waves of color came a King Alfred type and Mount Hood. All three of the above are large trumpet narcissi. These flowers delighted all who saw them well into May. The fourth bulb, Thalia, a Triandrus narcissus, has a more delicate flower, fragrant and graceful. She was planted near paths where she would be admired as the days became warmer. The following members generously sat in my cold garage separating and labeling bulbs from the huge, heavy bags shipped from Van Engelen Dutch Bulb Company or were down on their knees during one of four November planting sessions. THANK YOU! on behalf of CGCC and those who enjoyed the rewards of your work, whose breath you took away. Barbara Dillon, Eric Eisenhauer, Maureen Flaherty, Linda Fraker, Carol Graham, Kathy Gray, Ann Helbock, Arienne Lima, Trisha Massa, Ann Pompeo, Dana Roberts, Susan Sardina, and Sheila Toomey Community Garden Club of Cohasset Presidents Awards Tish Grinnell Trophy for Floral Design: Tania McCann Barbara Dillon Award for Horticulture: Terese D Urso Lee Drew and Dolores Roy Community Cup for Service to CGCC: Arienne Lima Citations of Merit: Maureen Adams, Barbie Bowman, Pat Cammett, Judy Dickstein, Kate Farrington, Julie Hess, Sue Reagan Congratulations!

May s Garden Therapy Mum s The Word Harborview Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation Ann Helbock at Elm Bank CGCC Thanks Russo s Greenhouse, Inc. for Donations to Plant Sale by Jan Todd Thank you Russo s Annuals brighten our May plant sale with wonderful welcoming color, against all of the green perennials waiting to burst forth, just as they do to our gardens, balconies, decks, and terraces. This year s annual tent held two tables of plants donated by members, others chosen by Julie Hess and Dana Roberts, as well as a third group selected by Ann Pompeo and Jan Todd from the massive varieties of annuals found in Russo s many greenhouses. As in several other years, Russo donated all of its plants in support of our club s many charitable and civic causes and in recognition of the long personal friendship between the Russo family and Dr. Roger and Ann Pompeo. The Community Garden Club of Cohasset celebrates Russo s generosity. Russo s Greenhouse, Inc. 134 Lincoln Street Bridgewater, MA

Plant Sale 2016 Memories Our net financial gain from this year s plant sale is $3, This amount is greater t h a n l a s t y e a r s outcome which was also a great year. Congratulations for the success and a job well done. There are leftover plants at Linda Pratt s, 482 King Street, for you to purchase on the honor system. Proceed to her back yard. Thank you, Wayne Sawchuck, for your many plant donations. Thanks, Boy Scouts, for helping out first thing in the morning.
