1 O C T O B E R E D I T I O N October is my favorite month of the year. The vivid orange, yellow and red leaves give me a renewed sense of wonder in Nature's bounty. The smell of creme brûlée in the yellow leaves of the Katsura and the sharp freshness in the cool morning and evening air bring me a sense of well being. Pumpkins, apples, cinnamon donuts - oh my October is an active month for our club. We start right in on the 2nd with a bird walk by Sally Avery. Our first horticulture meeting on the second Tuesday is followed by our Presidents Tea at the Abbey on the third Tuesday. The month is rounded out with a great program led by Iku teaching us how to make Origami decorative boxes. Lelia Conservation Pledge Did you know our club has a Conservation Pledge? 2 Announcements Executive Board Members please take note: Jackie Fitts was able to post the updated document How to Hostess an Executive Board Meeting on the CommunityGardenClubOfCohasset.org website. Once on the website, find the document under Resources. There is also a hard copy in the "pass-along" boxes, but it will be on the website for reference, as well. GCFM: Beginning October 1st and continuing for six Wednesday evening sessions, the GCFM is offering a course in the Basics of Floral Design. Students will learn the nuts and bolts of how to arrange a competitive floral design and how to enter a competition. The first class will cover the basics of preparing and entering a show, choosing containers, and selecting plant material. Subsequent sessions will cover the most popular fields of floral design and provide feedback on students arrangements. The goal is that at the end of the course participants will have a sufficient understanding of floral design - including the terminology and the mechanics - that they'll be confident to enter competitions, including Design Division II at the Boston Flower and Garden Show, which is open to everyone. All courses are held at our site at the Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley. As garden club members, you may receive Mass. Hort. member rates for courses. There will be a bird walk with Sally Avery on October 2nd, 9:30 a.m., through Bare Cove Park in Hingham Montreal Mosaiculture Once every three years, there is an international competition in horticultural sculpture, called "mosaiculture," in a major city in the world. In 2013 it was in Montreal. This is not topiary but rather creative sculptures of living plants. The greatest horticulturalists in the world, from 20 different countries, submitted plans a year in advance. Steel armatures were then created to support the works (some 40 feet high); they were then wrapped in steel mesh and filled with dirt and moss and watering hoses. Then they ordered 3 million plants of different shades of green, brown and tan, and these were grown in greenhouses all over Quebec. In late May, the horticulturalists came to Montreal and planted all of their plants in the forms at the Montreal Botanic Gardens where they remained standing for three months. 3 Flower Arranging at Cohasset Senior Center by Dolores Roy On June 12 Cynthia Chace showed a group of interested seniors how they could arrange flowers in a tea cup. She demonstrated, gave some tips, and then guided the participants as they created their own arrangements. Cynthia also told the group about her experiences and the arrangements she created as an exhibitor at Art In Bloom. Several of the ladies who made arrangements at this program expressed their delight and amazement at how long their arrangements lasted after they took them home. The next program at the Center will be on October 16. Jeanne Carroll will lead the group in creating a fall arrangement. Club Philanthropy continued The 2014 Community Garden Club of Cohasset Education Prizes (formerly known as scholarships) were awarded to the following students who have recently gone off to college: Derek Benson Caroline Evans Alexia Ritz Kate Broderick Dakota Achin Hannah Roy Foster Eymer The Nancy Gilmore Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Hannah Piasecki. Many thanks to Kitty Whitley, Annjean Moody, and Trisha Massa, for their much appreciated assistance this year. We congratulate all the recipients and wish them much happiness and success in college and in their future endeavors. Ingredients 1 C powdered sugar 1 3/4 C flour 2 t baking powder 1/4 t salt 1 C sugar 1 egg 1/2 t almond extract milk 1/2 C butter or margarine 1/2 C sliced almonds, coarsely chopped Club Philanthropy Shown below is a picture of member Barbara Dillon beside the garden she designed and planted for the John Smith Monument adjacent to Atlantica Restaurant. The funds for the purchase of plants and mulch were donated by our club. Scandinavian Almond Bars from Pat Ranney Almond icing: Stir together 1 C sifted powdered sugar, 1/4 t almond extract, and enough milk (3-4 t) to make icing of drizzling consistency. Stir together flour, baking powder and salt. Beat butter in a large bowl till softened. Add sugar, egg and almond extract and beat well. Add flour mixture and beat till well mixed. Divide dough into fourths. Form each into a 12-inch roll. Place 2 rolls 4-5 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten till 3 inches wide. Repeat with remaining rolls. Brush flattened rolls with milk and sprinkle with almonds. Bake in a 325 degree oven for minutes or till edges are lightly browned. While cookies are still warm, cut them crosswise at a diagonal into 1-inch strips. Cool. Drizzle with almond icing.

4 Junior Gardeners The following article, authored by member Arienne Lima, appeared in the Cohasset Mariner. It is included here for those of you who missed it or do not get to read the Cohasset paper. Deer Hill s Junior Gardeners Club kicked off this year with the annual planting in collaboration with Chris Kennedy of Kennedy s Country Gardens on September 15. The focus this year was maintaining the garden beds and terra cotta planters at the Deer Hill entrance planted in May 2013 by Kennedy and the Junior Gardeners. Donning gloves and shovels, the 25 junior gardeners energetically took direction from Kennedy and 7 Community Garden Club of Cohasset volunteers, to plant, mulch and fertilize the beds and nearby Butterfly Magnolia trees. Kennedy transplanted the Alpine Spruce trees, previously donated by Kennedy s Country Gardens, from the terra cotta planters to the Deer Hill courtyard in an existing perennial garden. The Junior Gardeners did not let Kennedy do all the hard work: they eagerly edged and mulched the beds themselves and were happy to push Kennedy s large wheelbarrow wherever he needed it. Under the direction of CGCC volunteers the Junior Gardeners designed an autumnal display in the terra cotta planters. They created a breathtaking edible display including kale, hot peppers, bok choy, swiss chard and beets in addition to the ornamental purple fountain grass and mums.

5 The Garden Club of Nagoya Activity Report of September 2014 One Woman s Life in Japan Our September general meeting was a speech by Ms. Hanako Ishikawa, founding and dedicated member of our garden club. For her presentation she wore a traditional Japanese Kimono and told us about her personal history and how she has dedicated herself to keeping Japanese heritage. She was born in Tokyo as the fourth among five daughters of her family. During World War II she was forced to evacuate Tokyo and live in Okayama in western Japan. She finished her high school in Nagoya later. In her younger days the status of women was still low in Japan and it was said that, Women are eternally without a home. It means that when young they were subordinate to their parents, after marriage to their husbands, and in old age, to their children. The position of a wife, married into her husband s family, was particularly low as she was also subordinate to her mother-in-law. Since the husband was usually out working, the wife and his mother were thrown into each other s company, giving plenty of opportunity for trouble to arise. Hanako got married at the age of twenty and was blessed with a boy and two girls. Her duty at her husband s home was to do all the chores for his family under strict supervision of her mother-in-law, including cooking, business affairs, and of course, rearing of the children. Such a busy daily routine hardly gave her time for herself. But thankfully, her mother-in-law allowed Hanako to take traditional Japanese lessons, such as Ikebana flower arrangement (Shogetsu), Japanese dance and even Noh play which is training available only to the upper class Japanese. Additionally, Hanako has taken several other Japanese traditional arts, such as Japanese dance, playing Koto (Japanese harp, like a zither) and Shamisen (three-stringed musical instrument like a banjo), calligraphy, incense ceremony, etc. These performing arts were taught by well-known teachers. Japanese Koto After rearing her children, Hanako started a volleyball group with neighboring house wives. Later she got a license as an official coach and in 1971 and was appointed as a director of Mother s Volleyball Association of the city of Konan as well as that of Konan Athletic Association.

6 In 1979 she took the lead in organizing a traffic safety association to promote a traffic safety campaign and movement. This association is now combined with more than forty other groups with over two thousand members. Such dedication to the city s administrative functions has resulted in her nomination to a committee on enforcement of the municipal traffic campaign. And that s not enough because Hanako has been very actively involved as an executive committee member of the social gatherings, and a chief managing director, for International Cultural Association of the City of Konan. Hanako has realized that, Practice and much training in Japanese heritage will bring remarkable development of human character. What is wealth in the truest sense of the word?
