1 FLAMINGO GARDENS ORCHID SOCIETY A F F I L I A T E D W I T H A M E R I C A N O R C H I D S O C I E T Y Page 1 February 2014 Mac s Orchids Featured Speaker at February Meeting Mac Rivenbark, along with his wife, Helen, is the owner of Mac's Orchids. He s also the former president of the Ft. Lauderdale Orchid Society. He grows and imports species from Asia and the Philippines. He always gives a demonstration on his latest Dendrobium species orchids. Mac is usually present at most of the orchid shows in South Florida. Recently, he was present at the Ft. Lauderdale Orchid Show Affiliated with The American Orchid Society Meeting 2nd Monday of the Month At 7:30pm 7241 Taft Street, Hollywood, FL us at FlamingoGardensOrchidSociety@gmail.com where each vendor was required to create an orchid display. The following picture is of his display. President s Message We have three important events coming up for our Society, the Flamingo Gardens Garden Show, our Annual Auction and the Flamingo Gardens Orchid Show. These events give you a great opportunity to volunteer, to help your orchid society move forward with its mission. When you volunteer with FGOS you are helping with a subject you feel passionate about, Orchids! This is a great way to make friends and cross paths with other people who share a common interest. As a volunteer you can contribute your skills, experience and perspective that we might not know you have. At our February meeting we will have sign up for volunteers for the Garden Show and the Orchid Show committees. We only ask you to help out for a few hours and you can select what you would like to do. We always seem to have a good time! Mac & Helen will be selling orchid plants at our February meeting. Our Annual Auction is our main fundraiser for FGOS. Please consider making a plant donation to our Auction. Think about sharing a division when you are repotting or maybe you have duplicates of the same plant. This is an easy way to help your society. Lastly it just feels good to volunteer! See you at the meeting! Jan
2 Page 2 Shirley s Corner By Shirley Decker Hi Folks! Here it is February already of the New Year! We have been having some pretty cold weather this winter; hope you all have been taking my advice to protect your orchids from the cold North wind with tarps. The wind can do more damage than the cold temperatures. The heavy fog that can cause condensation on leaves even under cover can also bring trouble. Botrytis is a fungus disease that can disfigure flowers with small black spots. Control is typically achieved in commercial greenhouses with fungicide in aerosol forms and by running fans to prevent condensation on the flowers. A small fan turned on the spiking and opened flowers at night will greatly alleviate the pressure of Botrytis. Also an application of soap or ordinary baking soda, at 1 Tbs. per gallon will help as well. Physan, RD40, Consan, and pool Algicide also give some control. Maintaining long lasting flowers on Phalaenopsis, Dendrobiums and bi-foliate Cattleyas in more perfect condition is well worth the effort. The flowers all last longer in cool weather! The lower overall temperatures of February call for less frequent and lighter applications of fertilizer. If any reddening of foliage persists, another application of Epsom salts and Potassium nitrate at 1 Tbs. per gallon each is called for. Please remember that if Epsom salts and Potassium Nitrate are used that these chemicals are fertilizers and no other fertilization is required. Like the avocados and the live oaks, many Cattleyas and other sympodial orchids have bloomed and are just commencing new growth in February. Right after flowering is an excellent time for repotting and the cool day time temperatures in the greenhouse are hospitable to the grower as well. Take stock of your repotting supplies and replenish as needed. Also watch out for mites and snails at this time of year. Above all get outside and enjoy the cool air as we all know summer is just around the corner! Shirley Mark Your Calendar for FGOS Events at Flamingo Gardens The 18 th Annual Garden Festival & Bonsai Show February 22 & 23 The 33 rd Annual International Orchid & Bromeliad Show April 19 & 20 We need Volunteers for both events!
