The Show season is underway with the Tamiami Show and the Fort Lauderdale Show behind us. Now it is the time to learn how to care for the plants you have added to your collection. Great reason to come to the meetings, bring your questions about orchid culture. If you want to make an orchid wish list, here are a couple ideas to help you. The Show & Tell table at our meetings is a way to learn what other members have success in growing and blooming. The guest speakers at our meetings are there to share their knowledge and love of orchids. Also, if you are at a show, look at the Hobbyist Display Table for other ideas. Remember, you want plants that will grow here in South Florida. The speaker at our January meeting was Judy Bailey. The presentation she gave was about Landscaping with Orchids and she had us glued to our seats. Thank you all for your comments on how much you enjoyed her presentation. Judy is at the end of her six-year student program with the American Orchid Society, now that is dedication! I look forward to having Judy back to speak in the future. 2 Page 2 MAC S ORCHIDS TO SHARE ORCHID GROWING ADVICE Mac & Helen Rivenbark are the owners of Mac's Orchids. They grow and import species from Asia and the Philippines. Mac is going to provide hands-on demonstrations on mounting, dividing, potting, and growing your orchids. He will be bring a number of plants to pot or mount along with talking about the different materials used and different ways to grow your orchids as well as culture tips. I m sorry that we didn t get to do Show & Tell! We had an excellent speaker and her program was longer than expected but I think everyone benefitted from her remarks! Please don t let the fact that we are sometimes unable to do Show & Tell keep you from bringing in your blooming plants! Many of us love to see them and it gives us an opportunity to see what s in bloom and how you are growing it even if you don t have the opportunity to tell us! Shirley s Corner By Shirley Decker While you are attending all the orchid shows in the following months, be on the lookout for a very pretty little species Cattleya named Cattleya aurantiaca. The flowers are somewhat star-shaped, with a spade-shaped lip, and borne in clusters of 10 to 15 flowers, giving a festive, showy display that will last for several weeks. Buy plants in bloom so that you can look for strong stems carrying open, bright flowers. Besides the typical orange, look for shades of yellow, red, and white. Cattleya aurantiaca is native to Guatemala and neighboring Central American countries, and blooms from late winter through spring. It is a bifoliate (two leaves on each psuedobulb.) Let it dry out between waterings. This Cattleya requires a bright location and day temperatures up to 90 F. Do not allow the night temperatures to drop below 60 F in the autumn when the plants are getting ready to set flowers for the following spring. Another species that is a neighbor geographically is Cattleya skinneri, which is called the Flower of San Sebastian in Costa Rica, where it is the national flower. Most flowers are rosy purple with a white throat, but a white form is also available. It is grown under the same conditions as the C. aurantiaca. Since both C. skinneri and C. aurantiaca are grown in the same area, a natural hybrid occurs. It is Cattleya x guatemalensis. The colors range from white to shades of pink and lavender to salmon, orange and red. This orchid is beautiful and can easily become a large specimen that puts on a great show. Some plants fill a shallow bushel basket and they have what looks like hundreds of bright flowers held well above the leaves. Constant air movement and more than 50 percent humidity are necessary to grow these plants well. An oscillating fan will do the job quite nice if you have little air movement. These orchids do not have a rest period so watering thoroughly when necessary and fertilize with in the autumn to promote the best possible flowering. If repotting use a coarse bark or a mix with mostly bark so that water drains freely through the medium and air moves through the mix, or do as I do and mount your orchid on a tree, fern, or cypress mount. Finally I want to congratulate Lori Parish for her first AOS award at the Ft. Lauderdale Orchid Show last month and two blue ribbons! Good job Lori!! She named her orchid after her grand-daughters.

6 Page 6 Congratulations to had her 3 year old orchid awarded by the AOS West Palm Beach Judging Center on January 24 th. Last year, Joan Viggiani recommended that Sandi consider bring this orchid in for judging the next time it bloomed. So, Sandy took it in and was awarded an AOS HCC! The orchid came from Krull-Smith but because Frank Smith had never registered it with RHS, Sandi was able to register and name it!! She chose to name it after both of her brothers who have passed away. The name is Blc. Memoria Brian Jonathan Susskind Brotherly Love. Frank still grows and sells this orchid, so going forward they will all carry a tag with this name!! The parents of this hybrid are Blc. Susan Harry x Blc. Sylvia Hill. Memoria Brian Jonathan Susskind Brotherly Love TICKET PRICES RISE As everyone knows the cost of just about everything has been going up, up, up! The only thing right now we see going down are gas prices and we all wonder when they will start rising again. Recently on Florida Orchid Growing - FOG Facebook page a poll was taken to see what orchid societies charge for raffle tickets. FGOS was very unique. We were the only society charging 50 cents a ticket and, we raffle 3 special blooming orchids on the ticket table. At the last board meeting we discussed the rise in the cost of running the society, the speaker s fees, refreshment supplies, rent, etc., and we felt that the time has come to increase the Raffle Ticket Prices. Beginning with our February meeting, ticket prices will be as follows: Raffle Table: $1.00 p/ticket or 6 tickets for $5.00 Blooming Orchids (on ticket table): $2.00 p/ticket or 3 tickets for $5.00 Raffle tickets are how we support!
