Succulent Morsels News of the Chinle Cactus & Succulent Society November 2014 Vol. 6, No. 11 To promote knowledge, enjoyment, cultivation, and conservation of cacti and other succulent plants among its members, other individuals and organizations throughout West-Central Colorado NOVEMBER S PROGRAM: TAXONOMY 101 & SAVING ABUSED PLANTS! The November program for the Regular Meeting of the Chinle Cactus & Succulent Society will feature talks by two of our members, Don Campbell and Lois Davidson. Lois will make Taxonomy understandable and simplified, even for the slowest of us!!! She is an excellent instructor, having spent many years teaching at Mesa College/CMU, and will entertain us with her dry wit, for sure. When you leave, you will be able to tell your friends exactly the difference between echinocereus and echinopsis cacti, and other fascinating factoids! It will be fun! Don s topic is Abused Plants and it rather speaks for itself. He will bring in a selection of plants that are struggling for one reason or another and discuss causes, effects and treatments! However, he would like members of the audience to bring in their problem plants for discussion, as well as any questions members might have regarding how not to abuse their plants. This is a great opportunity to get answers to both subjects: what to call cacti & succulents and why, and how to keep from abusing your plants. As usual, we will enjoy tasty homemade treats by Tom Burrows, as well as have time to socialize and win free plants in our drawings. Reminder: Be sure to bring any items you plan to donate to the Annual Dinner Meeting for door prizes or Silent Auction to the November meeting! Also your problem plants for discussion and advice! SLATE OF OFFICERS SET FOR ANNUAL ELECTIONS We are pleased to announce the following slate of officer candidates for the 2015 Society year: Continuing to serve in their current capacities are Maryann Benoit, President; Janet Hassell, Vice President; Loren Benoit, Treasurer; and Janet Hassell, Newsletter Editor. Members who have come forward as candidates are Deb & Glenn Mallory, Co-Secretaries; Lisa Cain, Member-At-Large & Archivist; and Sheri Skeie, Program Co-Chair with Don Campbell. This demonstration of interest and comittment is much appreciated by the current Board, and will contribute to the future success of the Society. Additional candidates can be nominated by members between now and the Annual Meeting, and at the Annual Meeting itself.

ANNUAL DINNER MEETING DEC. 11TH By Maryann Benoit It s ADM Time Again! Mark your calendars and make reservations for the always-popular CCSS Annual Dinner Meeting scheduled for Thursday, December 11, This fun, end-of-the-year social event will again be held at the Rock Bar and Grille at Tiara Rado Golf Club, from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. As in past years, this event will include a cash bar, buffet dinner, a short business meeting and election of Officers for next year. Our ADM would not be complete without lots of wonderful door prizes, interesting gift plants for everyone, and numerous opportunities for bidding wars on beautiful and unique silent auction items. You won t want to miss this ever-popular CCSS gathering! Heading up the planning this year, Loren and Maryann Benoit encourage you sign up to attend ADM at the November 13th meeting. The cost for this year s festivities is $23.00 per individual. Should you be unable to attend the November meeting, you may call Maryann or Loren at to make your reservations. Your checks, made out to CCSS, may be mailed to PO Box , Grand Junction, CO The Benoits need all reservations no later than December 1, and payments received by December 5, Joy Bush has graciously volunteered to collect your donated items for door prizes. However, since Joy is currently away, Maryann will gladly accept any donated gardening or cactus themed items at the November meeting. Or, you may call her to arrange pick up of your items. Joy and Maryann need to know about your donations by November 22 to insure a sufficient number of door prizes. Since we never know whose name will be picked for any particular gift, please try to make items appropriate for either a man or woman. We look forward to seeing you at the ADM. Don t miss out on the fun. OCTOBER GARDEN PARTIES Thanks to all who turned out for the October 4th Garden Party at WCBG: Maryann & Loren Benoit, Bob Bubel, Don Campbell, Lois Davidson, Glenn & Deb Mallory, Kathy Murdock and Stacie Skeie. And thanks to Loren Benoit (and Maryann) for taking pictures of the event!!2

This lovely photo taken by Loren benoit shows the WCBG garden at its best. We had a nice turnout for the Wednesday, October 15th Garden Party at CSU Extension, and made some significant progress in readying the garden for winter. Gardeners for this session included Maryann & Loren Benoit, Tom Burrows, Don Campbell, Lois Davidson, Lynn Dunham, Janet & Bill Hassell, and Walt Scheer.!3

The last Garden Party for 2014 was at the WCBG on Oct,25. Those present were Maryann & Loren Benoit, Tom Burrows, Carly Cain, Lisa Cain, Don Campbell, Lois Davidson, Deb & Glenn Mallory, and Walt Scheer. 8 March 2014: Don Campbell submitted this photo of the Colorado National Monument in winter. Tall Cactus to Give Away! We have this cactus (on left) that seems to need a little more light and love than we can continue to give it. We ve kept it inside because, the best we can find, it is an inside cactus. Can your organization take this cactus? And if not, can share some tips on how to better care for this tall guy. Thanks Gladys and Mike Kelher !8 This fall blooming yucca was seen in the CSU Ext. Garden on Oct. 15th, 2014.

NEW BOTANIC GARDENS IN SANTA FE By Deb Mallory Glenn and I are just back from Santa Fe and we had the opportunity to visit their new botanic gardens. They just opened in summer 2013, so if people haven't been down there to visit since then, we would encourage them to go see the gardens. It is small right now - developed area about 2 acres, but there are plans for expansion to around 12 acres. If the poster boards showing the planned new development are anything close to what it will be, it should be stunning once done. For now, although small, it is lovely and well worth a visit. They have a nice mix of cacti and succulents in amongst the other native and drought-tolerant perennials/grasses, and the landscape design is beautiful. They were also having a special sculpture display this summer - Origami in the Gardens. The sculptures are rendered in metal, as you can imagine, but follow the traditional paper origami patterns - the photo of the horses should be obvious. The gardens are located on Museum Hill, east of the Plaza a couple of miles...not hard to get to. Perennials Little Bluestem Meadow Origami Horses!9

I wandered to the back of a gift shop and was surprised to find a little garden complete with Koi pond and some imaginative ways to display succulents. Here are her photos of these displays!!10

SCENE AT THE LAST GARDEN PARTY, SAT. OCT. 27TH Photos and captions by Don Campbell! Some might suspect these are a couple of grumpy old guys, however, upon closer inspection one can detect faint smile. Where have all the chocolate donuts gone? A Fresh Step To eat or not to eat that is the question And one more point I m over here!11
