Succulent Morsels CONSERVATION CONTINUES TO BE PART OF THE CHINLE MISSION At least annually, we like to remind members of the Chinle C&SS s commitment to preserve and conserve succulents that are at risk of endangerment and those actually endangered. Our Society recognizes and endorses the Cactus & Succulent Society of America Conservation Code and encourages members of the Chinle Cactus & Succulent Society to observe the following principles for conserving native succulent plants (as adopted on June 3, 2013 by the Chinle C&SS Board) and state that we: 1. Actively discourage illegal field collecting of entire native plants by all members. Field collecting native plants, seeds or cuttings must be consistent with all pertinent laws and regulations. 2. Prohibit field collecting of entire native plants during any Chinle C&SS sponsored field trip or activity unless such activities are a) to salvage plants imminently threatened with destruction from land development or other habitat disturbance, b) to acquire plants for a Chinle C&SS supported public display garden and c) written authorization by the appropriate jurisdiction or landowner has been obtained. 3. Exhibiting or selling entire field collected plants at any event or activity sponsored by Chinle C&SS shall be prohibited. 4. Encourage acquisition of native plants through the purchase of seeds, cuttings, or entire plants from reputable growers and nurseries. 5. Encourage native plant conservation through the propagation News of the Chinle Cactus & Succulent Society July 2014 Vol. 6, No. 7 To promote knowledge, enjoyment, cultivation, and conservation of cacti and other succulent plants among its members, other individuals and organizations throughout West-Central Colorado REMINDER NO REGULAR CHINLE MEETINGS IN JULY OR AUGUST GARDEN PARTIES STILL HAPPENING ON SCHEDULE and sharing of seeds, cuttings and offsets. 6. Seek opportunities to promote conservation of native plants by a) providing periodic reminders of the Chinle C&SS conservation principles in newsletters, at meetings and during field trips or other activities, and b) disseminating information about legal and appropriate sources for obtaining seeds, cuttings and entire plants. Golden Barrel Cacti and other succulents are displayed at the Denver Botanical Gardens. Sara Oldfield and David Hunt s article, The Conservation Of Cacti And Succulents In Botanic Gardens, Volume 7 Number 1 - January 2010, notes that Botanic gardens have an important role to play in ensuring that no species of cactus or other succulent plant becomes needlessly extinct. These gardens typically have impressive collections of cacti and other succulents for display, landscaping, research and education purposes. With a significant proportion of arid land plant species being threatened with extinction in the wild, the
living collections in botanic gardens also have huge potential for ex situ conservation and restoration of natural populations. Some botanic gardens are already using their collections to fulfill these important roles. Their article goes on to state that Threats to the species in the wild include over-collection for international commerce, the all too familiar processes of habitat degradation and destruction and the overarching problem of global climate change. A preliminary assessment of the conservation status of cacti published in 2006 suggests that 542 species and subspecies are threatened with extinction a global scale (Taylor et al, 2006). (and) according to this survey, 366 of the globally threatened taxa are recorded in botanic garden collections. The most commonly recorded globally threatened cactus in botanic garden collections is Echinocactus grusonii, known as the Golden Barrel Cactus. This distinctive species, now widely cultivated, was first discovered in Large numbers of wild plants were exported from Mexico and by the end of the 19th century there were fears about the potential extinction of the species. Unfortunately in 1995, the original habitat of the golden barrel cactus was destroyed by the construction of a dam in the Moctezuma River Canyon between the states of Querétaro and Hidalgo. Twenty years later, a new disjunct population of this species was discovered about 500 km away in the state of Zacatecas. The DNA structure of the plants from the new and original locations is currently being studied by researchers from the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, University of Reading, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Echinocactus grusonii is listed as Critically Endangered by Taylor et al, Over 130 botanic gardens have this species in their collections (as well as plants held by individual members of our Chinle C&SS). Other globally threatened cacti that are held by a wide range of botanic gardens include Ariocarpus trigonus, Aztekium ritteri, Obregonia denegrii and Turbinicarpus pseudomacrochele and Mammillaria spp such as M. plumosa, M. microhelia, M. magnifica, M. wiesingeri, and M. zeilmanniana. All of these are represented in over 30 botanic gardens which assists in assuring their preservation. Of note, our WCBG and CSU gardens do not currently have any endangered Ariocarpus trigonus- Living Rock species, altho in the past we have had E. Sclerocactus glaucus. TRAVEL N TOOLS AT THE JUNE CHINLE C&SS REGULAR MEETING We had a nice turnout for the June Regular Meeting of the Chinle C&SS on June 12th. Dave Kennedy gave a great program on his and Judy s trip to New Zealand, with lovely photos to add to the show Lynn Dunham brought in a lovely blooming Sulcorebutia candiae for Show & Tell, and Tom Burrows shared two of his favorite tools for weed control, otherwise known as "Legendary Weapons of China. Nancy Glover (left) back from a Chinle hiatis, chats with Don Campbell and speaker, Dave Kennedy (right). 2 Members socialize and catch up with news before the meeting.
Above, Kathy Murdock, Sherri Skeie and Tom Burrows look at the drawing plants, while John Moore and guest, Earle Mullen check out the Silent Auction plants at the end of the table. On the right, John Moore holds up the tools that Tom shared with the group. On the left is the Dutch Hoe (also known as a swoe ) and on the right, the Cape Cod Weeder. For those of you interested in purchasing these tools, Tom says The web site for the Garden Tool Company for the Dutch Hoe and the Cape Code Weeder) is I ve also added this to the Links page on the web site. If you want to find out more about the Legendary Weapons, Tom recommends Legendary_Weapons_of_China. JUNE GARDEN PARTIES ROCK We had a great turnout for the June 7th Garden Party at the Western Colorado Botanical Garden and made a big dent in the weed invasion there Don Campbell worked at getting the rock walk-way back in shape, and the rest pruned, socialized and pulled weeds 3
Those attending the June 7th Garden Party included Tom Burrows, Don Campbell, Lois Davidson, Janet & Bill Hassell, Kate Kossa, Glenn Mallory, Kathy Murdock and Sheri Sheie. Below is the entrance to the WCBG Garden, aglow with cacti, sedum and ice plant. While the attendance was less at the June 18th Garden Party at CSU Extension Gardens, attendees reported they made good progress on the area. The yuccas were definitely performing that Wednesday as shown by the photos below taken by Don Campbell. Don was joined by Tom Burrows, Kate Kossa, and Lois Davidson to play in the cactus beds. 4
DATELINE: MATERA, ITALY Loren Benoit reporting: We are in Matera, Italy and have found quite a lot of cactus. We saw cactus in Rome, in Vieste and huge patches of it on the road to Alberobello and Matera. The folks in Matera really like plants and they have a lot of nice cacti. Above photos were taken by Loren Benoit on their trip to Italy in June this year. FREE TO A GOOD HOME Don Campbell shares this message regarding a free plant: Randy Cook has an adoptable 7 foot tall 'ponytail palm' (Beaucarena recurvata) in an 18 inch pot that he's had for the past 39 years. He wants to give it to someone willing and able to give it a good home. Anyone interested in possibly adopting this plant should contact him at (This photo is NOT Randy's plant...it is an image, FYI, from the internet.) 5
