Succulent Morsels News of the Chinle Cactus & Succulent Society April 2015 Vol. 7, No. 4 To promote knowledge, enjoyment, cultivation, and conservation of cacti and other succulent plants among its members, other individuals and organizations throughout West-Central Colorado APRIL PROGRAM: Hookless Cacti: Flowers, Fruits, Bees and Energy Development The April Regular Meeting of the Chinle Cactus and Succulent Society will feature Rich Alward, Principal Ecologist and Owner of Aridlands Natural Resource Consulting in Grand Junction, Colorado. His presentation will focus on The Colorado Plateau region of western Colorado and eastern Utah which host several rare endemic plants, including three federally threatened Sclerocactus species. Dispersed development, such as that associated with oil and gas exploration and production, has been shown to have indirect and far-reaching ecological effects on plant communities and their pollinators that extend well beyond any physical footprint and direct loss of individuals and habitat. Mechanisms include modification of nearby habitats via dust deposition, alteration of runoff, and introduction of invasive plants or other changes in plant communities that influence spatial and temporal availability of pollen and nectar sources. Rich Alward discusses environment changes with a friend. Understanding the potential effects from dispersed development on rare plants and their pollinators is critical not only for assessing the nature and extent of the threats, but also for proactively developing protection, mitigation, and restoration practices for land managers. His talk will expand upon these potential effects. Here s some information about Rich: As noted above, he is the Principal Ecologist and Owner of Aridlands Natural Resource Consulting in Grand Junction, Colorado. For over ten years, he has conducted ecological research on the impacts of development on native ecosystems, especially in areas supporting important wildlife habitat and rare and endangered plants in western Colorado and eastern Utah. Much of his work occurs on public lands on behalf of private developers including energy, mining, and reservoir-related projects. Work and science has introduced Alward to many great experiences in canyon country and in the Great Plains, and as far afield as Antarctica and Swaziland. He has served on the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission for nearly eight years and was appointed by Gov. Ritter and re-appointed by Gov. Hickenlooper to provide expertise in soil conservation and reclamation from the perspective of a scientist. Prior to moving to Grand Junction, he earned a Ph.D. in Ecology from Colorado State University, and both an M.S. and B.S. in Biology from the University of Nebraska. This upcoming program will undoubtedly be an interesting one, and one you will not want to miss! Rich may even tell us what he was doing talking to that penguin and why!!!

Lynn & George Dunham, brought show plants & also helped at the show.!3 Al & Pat Severson, volunteers, in front of second of three show tables.

John Moore s Aloe & Agave Corner Sue Fuller makes a point with a visitor! Show volunteers Bill Hassell (L) and John Moore (R) enjoy some humor! Don Campbell s First Prize winners: Discorea elephantipes (L) and Mammalaria plumosa (R) were real crowd pleasers!!4

FIRST GARDEN PARTY MARCH 21ST AT WESTERN COLORADO BOTANICAL! We had a great turnout for our first Garden Party of the season at the Western Colorado Botanical Garden! Participants included Maryann & Loren Benoit, Tom Burrows, Joy Bush, Don Campbell, Lois Davidson, Janet & Bill Hassell, Kathy Murdock, Shari Skeie, Susan Rose, Walt Scheer and Kate Weissenburger. As always, there were many cuttings that need good homes, and several of us snapped up specimens for our cactus and succulent gardens. Our next Garden Party is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1st, at the CSU Extension Garden. Let s have another good turnout for Garden Party No. 2!!5

All garden parties start at 9 am and usually end at 11 am. Please mark your calendars with these dates so you don t forget to come out and share in this important work at our two beautiful gardens! Gardening is great for your health, fun and an easy way to give back to your community. When the weather is too hot or cold, feel free to come earlier or later than the scheduled times. Please let Lois Davidson, ldavidso@coloradomesa.edu know how long you gardened at each session for accurate records of volunteer hours. We look forward to seeing you at the gardens. We need and appreciate your help! CCSS has a set of gardening tools, but we encourage you to bring your own as well as buckets or containers for weeds. Mark your tools so you can identify them!!6

Workshop: 2015 Field Weed Identification Workshop Friday May 1st, 2015 Workshop 9am-3pm, Palisade Insectary Tour 3-4pm Grand Junction, Colorado Registration - (copy & paste to your browser) COST = Workshop is FREE but you must register to attend! Free drinks and snacks will be provided, and each attendee will receive a copy of the latest edition of the Noxious Weeds of Colorado identification booklet! Please bring your own lunch! People who should attend: Do you have a seasonal weed management crew you need to train? Are you an environmental consultant, or oil & gas employee responsible for weed management? Are you an herbicide spray contractor? Are you a lawn & garden professional? Are you a private landowner who just wants to know how to identify the noxious weeds on your property? Are you a plant identification enthusiast who just wants to know more about the good and bad plants in the Grand Valley? If so, please join us on Friday May 1st for a field tour of several sites in the Grand Valley to learn how to identify a list of local noxious weeds in the field, followed by a tour of the Colorado Department of Agriculture Palisade Insectary to learn more about local biocontrol options. Each attendee will receive a free copy of the Noxious Weeds of Colorado booklet which will be used as a training tool. If you have further questions, please call Julie Knudson at the Tamarisk Coalition at for more information. Event is sponsored by Tamarisk Coalition, Xcel Energy, and Gates Family Foundation. Partners include Mesa County, CSU Extension, Palisade Insectary, CSU Native Plant/Master Gardeners, Western Colorado Conservation Corps, CSU Extension Small Acreage Program, and Montrose County. WHAT S BLOOMING? A lovely first bloom on a turbinicarpus schmiedickeanus ssp. schmiedickeanus, on a 1-1/4 plant at J. Hassell s.!7 Now THIS is a bloomin mammalaria! Thanks to Linda Self, a friend from Tucson, in whose garden it is blooming!

CHANGES IN MEETING ACTIVITIES At the March Board meeting, the activities at the regular meeting were discussed. Because of a limited response to having plant raffle AND a silent auction plant sale at each meeting, it was decided to alternate those activities. The next raffle will be this month (April). and the next silent auction plant in May. If interest in these activities increases, we can always resume the previous way of doing things. Let a Board Member know how you feel about it! MARCH PROGRAM: CACTI & SUCCULENT PEARLS! Don Campbell did a nice job of moderating the discussion after viewing two excellent videos of the basics of cacti and succulent care. A lively discussion took place after the program, and experts and novices alike came away with a few pearls to improve their gardening skills. (L to R) Lynn Dunham, Don Campbell, Lois Davidson, Sheri Skeie & Bill Hassell catch up before the meeting. Nice to see Judy McCart (L) on a surprise visit from Denver, as she chats with Julie Bursi. The March meeting attracted a nice turnout in our new meeting place at the WC Botanical Gardens.!8
