1 EARLY SPRING 2018 Clippings from the Garden The Newsletter of the F.W. Vanderbilt Garden Association, Inc. A little preview of Spring at Adams Thanks to all the volunteers who manned our table at the Adams Garden Show February 23-25! Kickoff Meeting Our Spring Kickoff meeting will be held Sunday March 25, from 2-4 PM in the Wallace Visitor Center at the FDR Home and Library in Hyde Park. Bring refeshments and get volunteer hours for doing so (attending the meeting also counts as volunteer hours). See you there! Notice!! To all volunteers: Just a reminder that you will need 15 hours to stay an active member. Please keep this in mind as we work through the garden season. This can be a combination of garden and non-garden hours. Thanks for your dedication and we look forward to a new season. VIP committee Bookmarks The workshops to make bookmarks will be held on April 6, 13 & 20 at 9:30 AM in the Tool House. These are needed to replenish ones sold at Adams, Cranberry's & the Vandy Visitor's Center Gift Shop. No skill needed! Please bring any pressed flowers you may have. Any questions, please contact Mary Boscher at Garden Tea 2018 Our 5th annual garden tea will be held on Sunday September 9, 2018 from 2-4pm in the formal gardens. The event is fashioned in the spirit of the early 1900's. It will feature a selection of teas from Harney and Sons, tea sandwiches, scones, cupcakes, and cookies. The Botticelli Players will provide live music and on the heels of the 100th anniversary of the Women's Suffrage movement, Susan Goodier, PH.D. will be our guest speaker. She has devoted her life to researching and writing about the Women s Suffrage movement. The event will take place under a tent (if heavy rain is in the forecast, the event will be moved to the Wallace Center). So, dress in period clothes or wear a hat, but definitely save the date as we sell out every year! 1

2 What s going on in the gardens - by Dale Badgley With spring just around the corner (hopefully), we have been preparing for the gardening season. About thirty rose replacements have been ordered. The annual plant order has been placed. We are expecting about 7,000 plants. The order is divided between Adam s and Sabellico s. The delivery dates are May 14th and 21st. Replacements have also been ordered for the perennial and cherry walk areas. The cannas have already been potted up and are being stored in the tool house. As soon as the weather cooperates, we will trim back the grape vines. Last fall we hired a professional arborist to prune the cherry trees. There were dead branches and many crossed branches. Some of them were getting too tall. They look a lot better now. We are crossing our fingers for blossoms this year. If they don t produce, we may have to replace them. No date has been set yet for starting. An will be sent out as soon as we know when we can get into the garden. Looking forward to seeing you all soon! Storm update: tree damages Tool House As a result of the March 2nd storm, the park lost lots of branches, limbs and some trees. One tree snapped and landed on the Tool House, resulting in some damage to the roof. Power and heat in the building has been turned off, and no one is allowed in. NPS is in the process of cleaning up and will be repairing the damage. Student art exhibit From April 1- May 31, 9:00 am-6:30 pm daily, there will be a student art exhibit at the Henry A. Wallace Visitor & Education Center. In partnership with the FDR Presidential Library/Museum and the Dream Rocket Project, this year's theme is "Dream big, everywhere in the world...everywhere in your life." The exhibit features student art pieces from educational institutions around the region focusing on FDR's Four Freedoms: Freedom from Want, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, and Freedom from Fear. 2

3 President s Message As we start another gardening season, thoughts turn to the founders who had the vision to think ahead. Ours is truly a remarkable garden with a most exceptional history. From the barren land and crumbling structures thirty-four years ago, to the breathtaking garden beds that wow visitors from around the world, we are ready to ensure an extraordinary experience to all who come. Everyone reading this newsletter has a real part in its continuing success. I thank you. Being a volunteer means you deeply care and that shows and is appreciated. Every person who is a member and supports our sales and educational events - such as Earth Day, Memorial Day Weekend Plant Sale, and Garden Tea knows that this garden is well worth it. This year, I ask you to stroll in and "see" the garden as a first time visitor. Let's share ways to improve the experience, work together to impart its history, and along with the National Park Service, ensure its continued rehabilitation and beauty. Details are not available as of this newsletter publication, but information can be had by calling closer to the date. Please consider becoming a Garden Interpreter to give garden tours the third Sunday afternoon of the month, May thru October. Local student writes about Barefoot Kate In January, 10th-grade Millbrook High School student Alice Rosi-Marshall won a local essay contest by writing about Barefoot Kate. In Stone Faced she wrote Since I was eight years old, I have found refuge in the Vanderbilt Gardens. What fascinated me most was the statue of the woman forever dancing underneath her brick archway. Take Note: Our Plant Sale is Memorial Day Weekend, May 26, 27 & 28. Jim was on our Board of Directors from 2004 to 2007, serving as Vice-President for two of those years. Jim was also the Sponsor Co-ordinator for several of our Artists in the Garden fundraisers, selling ads for the art show booklet. Our condolences to his family. Gardeners Quote Soil is what people used to call dirt, before they became gardeners. If you have really good soil, you can grow almost anything.
