We fell in love with the livelyhood and comraderie we found in the marke. The amount of exchange between the merchants, the visitors, the buyers, the tourists, the residents, the community. Exchange of goods and treasures, and also words, conversations, friendships. We felt we saw a glimpse of the Chinese spirit in this market. Daphne & Yiqun RIVER Painting
Pan Jia Yuan District Pan Jia Yuan area is located in the southeast of Beijing and closed to the 3rd ring road. The convient transportation and good location facilicate the cluster of antique facilities. There are about 11 antique markets in this area(red color), 7 auctionss(blue color) and numbers of antique institutions. Pan Jia Yuan district has a strong antique atmosphere and the potential to form the antique industry chain PANJIAYUAN ANTIQUE MARKET BEIJING PANJIAYUAN ANTIQUE MARKET GEOGRAPHICALLY & HISTORICALLY The global Chinese antique art market reached a total of $7.9 billion in 2014, and there are 721 auction company sell Chinese antique art, which reach the peak in the history. 4 MARKET STUDY Djemaa El Fna Marrakech, Morocco Studying culturally and historically rich markets around the world helped find the essentials of markets worldwide to learn from them and have the ability to serve visitors from around the world. The intangible heritage is the core to increase the local indentity of market and attract visitors. CHINESE MARKET STUDY We tried to find the intangible heritage of Chinese market. The famous Chinese painting--- Along the river during the qingming festival presents a picture of Chinese market in 900 years ago. Most of the activities are centralized in a business street, including vendors, shops, theater, tea house and so on. The quite courtyards and gardens are behind the street which are used by the merchants and residents. This kind of form provide possible for the multiple functions of market Grand Bazaar Istanbul, Turkey Camden Lock Market London, England Chichicastenago Market Chichicastenago, Guatemala Chandni Chowk Market Delhi, India Chatuchak Market Bangkok, Thailand Queen Victoria Market Melbourne, Australia The courtyard study helped to understand the Chinese culture, like the hidden axis and circulation in courtyard and the human scale. At the same time, the division of view which is perfect used in Chinese garden help to build the sense of exploration. These help us to think about the market design FACTORS OF INTANGIBLE HERITAGE LAYOUTS OF WORLDWIDE MARKETS FUCTIONS OF MARKETS TASTE SHAPE INTANGIBLE HERITAGE COLOR VALUE SMELL LAYOUTS Contained in building In an open square Along streets COMMERCE + DIALOGUE + EXCHANGE + LAW + SOCIAL = MARKETS EAR HOUSE ( 耳房 ) PATHWAYS ( 廊 ) BACKSIDE BUILDING ( 后罩房 ) MAIN HOUSE ( 正房 ) WESTERN SIDE HOUSE ( 西厢房 ) TASSEL GATE ( 垂花门 ) FRONT YARD ( 前院 ) OPPOSITE HOUSE ( 倒座房 ) BACK YARD ( 后院 ) EASTERN SIDE HOUSE ( 东厢房 ) MIDDLE YARD ( 中院 ) SCREEN WALL ( 影壁 ) GATE HOUSE ( 门房 ) GATE ( 大门 ) Straight Veranda Straight Veranda Curve Veranda KEY FACTORS TO FORM A MARKET IN DIFFERENT TIME BUSINESS & TRANSACTIONS ASSEMBLIES & GATHERINGS POPULATION GROWTH LED TO MARKET GROWTH BC PAST NOW UNIVERSAL CENTER FOR LOCAL IDENTITY Features 1. Four sides are closed 2. Buildings are face to yard, whcih can help to solve the light, drainage, ventilation and tr roblem 3. The courtyard is not open to pubic and the gate is normally face to south or east 4. Use the pathways when it s raining 5. Clear axis Wang Shi Garden Liu Garden
IDEAS Our idea is to keep the intangible heritage of old Chinese market---the street market and build a humanistic scale for visitors. The street and courtyard model provides the possibility for the combination of multiple functions which help Pan Jia Yuan Market to be the incubator in this area and drive the form of antique industry chain. SREET Studied from the painting, a street is created on the site, filled with plazas, gardens and other programs. The most attractive things are centralized in this street. At the same time, the zigzag street takes the place of straight street which help to build the feeling of exploration and maximize the frontage of street. The spaces which are resulted from this kind of street can provide more activities for people and lead their directions. Basically, we promote five core concept, street, boundless, program, roof and core. If the street is like a river that is inundated with people and other activities, the roof is like a mountain that is quite and beautiful. It provides a quite space for different purpose and also solves the rain water problem. They are like a Chinese mountain and river painting which pursue a statement to balance the relationship between people and nature. Idea sketches VS. Straight street VS Zigzag street Different space forms which are built by zigzag street
BOUNDLESS There is no boundary between the market and surroundings. The secondary roads are used to distribute the people in main axis, and at the same time, connect the market with nearby communities PROGRAM The couryard idea help to build a different space which are more private and quite than main axis. In this way, the program needed quite space is easily arranged in the backyards and upper level. People have different demands can directly find the space and would not be disturbed VISITORS are nomally centralized in main axis to enjoy the fun of stalls and other recreation programs COLLECTORS like to choose quite club, gallerys or auctions RESIDENTS like to stay in the quite parks STUDENTS can learn different traditional Chinese culture in the workshop ARTIST stay in the deepest space which is good for their crreation
ROOF The big pieces of roofs help to keep the coherence of the market. In addition, studied from the courtyard, the angle of roofs help the rainwater falls into the courtyard. The bio-swales and water collectors help to collect the water falls from the roof. CORE Centralizing the most essential component is crucial for the implementation of its success. A strong cultural core is the foundation of this project, where culture is spread through knowledge. EXCHANGE EDUCATION ENTERTAINMENT Bio-swales under the roof Bio-swales on the street Water collector
SITE OPPORTUNITIES The main street connect with two important points. One is on the northwest of market, which has a small green park and several services. It is also the central point of traffic. We think this corner has the potential to be a service core. The other one is on the southeast of market, which is near the subway station. Most of the visitors come to market from this point. MT. RIVER PANJIAYUAN ANTIQUES/CRAFT MARKET Market Program Diagrams GREEN CORNER PUBLIC TRANSIT These series of diagrams highlight the order and level of program throught the design of the market site.
PROGRAMS We reorganized existing program into new program to minimize the categories and serve the different characteristics per category. The new merchandise placed on site by popularity and functional needs. It is not just a place for shopping antiques, but also feeling culture. Gradually, it will become a mutiple center for different visitors BUILDING STYLE METAL Loca tion ART STUDIO PAPER MAGNET CONTAIN RADIATE MAGNET CONTAIN RADIATE CR M At 1992, antique merchants began to appear in Panjiayuan district. The low rent price, and the convinent transportation afford the merchants from other provinces a good opportunity to sell. At first, most of them sell on the ground which is almost zero input, and after a while, it becomes a culture which attract a lot of buyers to here. After several years, Panjiayuan district becomes the symbol of Beijing antique market, and more and more antique markets came to here with different manage style, including the auction company. At this time, Panjiayuan district beome a container to absorb diverse programs With the development of Panjiayuan, it is becoming the antique culture district. And it beomes a card that people from other places would choose this as a place to learn and experience antique culture which ask itself to has the ability to increase the influence. + G M: Stall, Shops, Entertainment, Food C: Gallery, Workshop, Education, Auction R: Studio, Club Restraunt Workshop/ Auction Gallery Stalls Restraunt Studio/ Club Stalls/ Shops SHOPS BOOKS SHOPS STUDIOS SHOPS CLUB G: Green Space Recreation place/ Circulation EXHIBITION Existing Program CLUB STALL WORKSHOP AUCTION EXHIBITION RESTRAUNT Centralized in two entrance and near the musem ANTIQUE CULTURE museum EDUCATION PUBLIC AUCTION WORKSHOP STUDIOS Proposal Program BOOKS SHOPS CLUB Existing (Units: m²) Proposal THEATER Underground Parking Served for market and nearby residents LANDSCAPE Residental park, rain garden, bioswals roof garden GALLERY AUCTION LIBRARY WORKSHOP PRIVATE PUBLIC The order of program fades gradually from public to private along the horizontal level and vertical level in terms of different demands and users. 10 The Entry points are welcomed by public service functions. Along the main route, zigzag is on both sides. We can see different levels of selling: the foreground is the ground selling, the middle ground is the stalls on the frontage of courtyard and the second floor stalls. Through the main axis, you are led in the path with maximized store frontage. And you pass the series of different functioning courtyards. Stall frontage are the entries to the courtyards. Until you reach the culture center in the where the axis come together. You are always guided to the culture center that has an open air quality, and it has multi-purpose, such as resting, lounging, theater and other non-trace activities.
