Mrs. Coppolo, owner of Redland Herb Farm, will introduce students to growing herbs in South Florida, cover the seven deadly sins of herb growing and talk about the medicinal and culinary uses of herbs. You will be able to share your personal harvest with no fear of wondering where your fresh herbs were grown. Potted herb, tomato and salad greens will be available FOR SALE during class. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 20 (one session) Fee: Member, $25; Non-member, $35 PLANT PROPAGATION BY SEED AND CLIPPINGS Susan Casey Do you ever look at a plant and wonder how it got its start? Want to get your garden growing with the plants you already have in it using seeds and clippings? Lifelong South Florida resident and nursery owner Susan Casey will demonstrate the various techniques used to expand your garden from existing foliage. See how she grows vegetables in raised beds, containers, elevated grow boxes on legs, Earthboxes and in kiddie swimming pools. Elaine will also show off her various experiments with fertilizers and potting mixtures. Other edibles will be highlighted such as fruit trees, bananas and pineapples. MOTES Dr. Martin Motes This is perfect timing for Vanda fans to learn about these gorgeous orchids. South Florida will have numerous orchid shows and sales during the upcoming months and here is your chance to hone your knowledge. Learn from this expert Vanda grower whose book, Florida Vanda Growing: Month by Month, will be available for purchase during the class. Dr. Motes will introduce students to Vanda culture: basic care, watering, feeding, light and air requirements all on a month by month schedule. During the Sunday field trip (which will be held at a commercial Vanda grower s nursery) students will have a hands-on potting and basketing session which will also include grooming and displaying techniques, an overview of tools, tricks and gadgets, and a tour of the nursery and landscape. All students will go home with two orchids (a $25 value). 3 HORTICULTURE BUILDING A SUBTROPICAL GARDEN Carlos Somoza The key to building beautiful gardens in South Florida relies heavily on choosing the right building materials for your application and applying common sense construction techniques to your garden design. Miami landscape designer, Carlos Somoza, will present both natural and man-made building material alternatives including locally quarried and imported stone, precast pavers, and tropical hardwood decking. Tired of buying and killing your orchids; or them not thriving or blooming? This course will cover the basic principles of growing orchids successfully from buying and watering to potting and fertilizing. Students will leave this short course excited about living in South Florida, which is the perfect subtropical environment for growing orchids. The most frequent orchid growing mistakes and how to prevent them will be covered during class. 4 GRAFTING TROPICAL FRUIT TREES (AT FAIRCHILD FARM) Dr. Noris Ledesma The three hour class will be spent in a practical session of the whip and tongue grafting technique; a challenge to master but has one of the highest rates of success. The art of grafting to gardeners is a fascinating subject to learn. Ms. Ledesma will show participants the process of growing rootstock, to nursery beds and finally in established orchards. You ll then practice and graft an avocado. Please bring your grafting knife; or you may purchase one during class. This class takes place at the Fairchild Farm, located in Homestead. Directions will be sent to registered students. 9:00 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 5 (one session) Fee: Member, $40; Non-member $55 BEGINNER BEEKEEPING FOR THE BACKYARD GARDENER (AT FAIRCHILD FARM) Dr. Noris Ledesma In this class for the novice beekeeper, you will learn about beekeeping and harvesting honey. Additionally this class will focus on the horticultural relationship between bees and tropical fruit trees. Books, bee hives and bees are available for purchase during the class. 5 HORTICULTURE A TOUR OF CHRIS MIGLIACCIO S BIODIVERSE GARDEN Chris Migliaccio This garden tour will feature longtime palm and aroid instructor Chris Migliaccio s beautiful, biodiverse, budget-minded and animal-friendly garden landscape. Integrated beautifully into a residential neighborhood in Cutler Bay, you ll be inspired by his garden that features natives, palms, aroids, wildlife attractors, walkways, specimen displays and outdoor work areas. Participants will receive a plant, a handout of gardening suggestions and plant sources. A map to Chris s garden will be provided to registered students. 10:00 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 9 (one session) Fee: Member, $25; Non-member, $35 LANDSCAPING USING NATIVES, CITRUS AND ATTRACTOR PLANTS Susan Casey Want to learn the perfect spot for native plants? Interested in attracting pollinators, big and small? Why not take advantage of the wonderful variety of plants suited to South Florida, including citrus, and create your own tropical paradise. Learn about choosing varieties, planting, fertilizing and specific plants that will be bird and butterfly attractants. Photo by Mary Neustein/FTBG DISCOVERING THE NATIVE ORCHIDS OF SOUTH FLORIDA Jason Downing Florida is home to nearly half of the orchid species found in the United States. In South Florida, many tropical orchids have established by blowing over from the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Mexico and include globally endangered species. Through his lecture and garden tour, Jason will help you in identifying these natives when you are enjoying Florida s great outdoors. He will introduce you to living samples found around the Garden, including orchids that are part of the Million Orchid Project. After a tour of Fairchild s native orchid collection and the orchid micro-propagation laboratory YOU will become a steward of the Million Orchid Project when you transplant orchids in the Garden and take one home to transplant in your yard. 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16 (one session) 14 Registration is online at
6 PRIVATE TOUR OF MR. & MRS. LOUIS WOLFSON III s ESTATE GARDEN Susan Casey The grounds of this estate garden are a prime example of natural beauty in multiple small habitats. One can walk next to a lush mangrove that leads you to a private beach. Nearby is a magnificent enclosed pool surrounded by a variety of colorful plants; some are potted, others bedded and still others are attached to trees. Rainforests, beds of brilliant bromeliads, orchids, palms and many other surprises are in this ever changing project which has been decades in the making. Directions to this private garden provided upon registration. 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16 (one session) BROMELIADS: EASY TROPICALS FOR YOUR SOUTH FLORIDA GARDEN Peter Kouchalakos Learn the basics of growing these attractive, adaptable and colorful epiphytes. While most often seen growing in the ground or on trees, they also do well in pots. Our instructor/grower will take you through propagating pups, choosing the optimum growing medium and containers, watering and misting, providing air circulation and lighting, fertilizing and methods of combating pests. He will also share his experience in growing show plants. Photo by Mary Neustein/FTBG HORTICULTURE TOP 40 ORCHIDS FOR SOUTH FLORIDA Guillermo Salazar Professional orchid collector and American Orchid Society student judge, Guillermo Salazar, will take you on a wonderful visual journey of the most beautiful, colorful and easy orchids to grow in your South Florida garden. You will learn key growing requirements and tips for success while incorporating them into your own garden style. Students are welcome to bring pictures of their plants and/or small samples (in a secured plastic bag) and lots of questions! Each participant will receive a valuable orchid care guide and a list of the orchids covered in the class. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 4 (one session) JANUARY TO JUNE
7 PROPER TRIMMING TECHNIQUES Bob Brennan When you trim your trees and shrubs, do you worry you may be trimming too much? Or possibly not trimming enough? This class is always a great refresher for gardeners to take as they get ready for that busy growing season here in sunny South Florida and to be prepared for the start of hurricane season on June 1st. After learning about the importance of plant choice (the right tree for the right place) you will learn the basics of trimming, including how to predict the plant s response. A natural look is the goal: this is not a topiary class. Basic tools will be on display and Fairchild s arborist, Bob Brennan will demonstrate proper trimming techniques on specimens in the Garden. 9:00 to noon Saturday, May 14 (one session) THE BAMBOO GARDEN: A PRIVATE GARDEN TOUR AND LECTURE Gary Rich Bamboo, the largest member of the grass family, evokes images of the tropics. Be inspired as this talented grower takes you on a walking tour of his bamboo garden. Gary will demonstrate proper plant placement, trimming, mulching, fertilizing and maintenance to successfully grow bamboo in South Florida. Directions to this private garden provided upon registration. Bamboo will also be FOR SALE during the tour. 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21 (one session) Fee: Member, $25; Non-member, $35 GROWING MANGOS IN SOUTH FLORIDA (AT FAIRCHILD FARM) Dr. Noris Ledesma This course presents mango cultivation throughout South Florida. We will discuss propagating, pruning, harvesting and handling at both the commercial and home garden level. She will discuss how to grow them, how to combat insect and disease problems and review the many varieties to choose from. Campbell Fairchild is pleased to have their Director of Horticulture offer his expert grafting techniques in this hands-on workshop at the Fairchild Farm. To the novice, grafting seems like a mysterious and difficult procedure. In truth, it is a precise, straightforward technique that can be learned like any other. Once you master it, you can multiply your favorite plants or choose from the incredible multitudes of cultivars and species not commonly available. You ll learn both the benefits and disadvantages of grafting. Various techniques will be demonstrated and you will be given an informative tour of the farm/grove. Plant material will be provided for practice; students may purchase a grafting knife during the class or you may bring your own. This class is limited to 15 students and will take place at The Fairchild Farm located in Homestead. A map will be provided upon registration.
