1 DISTRICT II Bulletin MAY 2014 clematis A Word From Your District II Director It has been said that nearly every gardener is an optimist, or ought to be Spring has arrived, the time to till the soil, plant the seeds, fertilize, and watch the crops grow. Almost overnight, we ve gone from dreaming of g a r d e n a c t i v i t i e s t o b e i n g immersed in them. Our spring events schedule was a full one. District II s convention was held on Feb. 19, Hosted by the Garden Club Council of Ft. Worth, attendees were treated to a taste of Seasons in the Botanic Garden. Dr. Judy Griffin, author, lecturer, and herbalist was our featured speaker. TGC president, Sarah McReynolds, was our honored guest. The afternoon session was devoted to recognizing the achievements of our District II clubs. A list of District II awards and Director s citations will be found elsewhere in this bulletin, along with District II club winners at the South Central Region and State levels. Thanks to Barbara Bateman and all the members of the Ft. Worth Council who participated in making this an outstanding day for District II. Congratulations to the top 4 District II clubs for 2013: Waverly Park, Grapevine, Eagle Mountain, and Colleyville. Creative programs included making yard art and planters from recycled glass as well as an informative presentation by Les Constable, owner of Brushy Creek Vineyards.complete with his confession that his current occupation began as a hobby that just got out of hand. (Sound familiar, fellow gardeners?) District II was well represented at the Awards banquet on March 29. Our TGC convention followed SCR: same location and same level of wonderful programs and fun activities. At the concluding Awards banquet on April 2, Grapevine Garden Club was named State Gold Club of the Year and Garden Culture Club the State Silver Club for Please Note: TGC Headquarters will no longer be using a P.O. Clubs compete against each other by Club Rating such as Gold or Bronze and by size of club. The first place winners of each award in each category are sent to state chairmen. Eligibility: 1 st 5 th grade students 2. Only You Can Prevent Wildfires Smokey Bear is recognized nationally and internationally as the symbol for fire prevention. 3. Lend a Hand Care for the Land Woodsy Owl is America s icon for the conservation of the environment. 4. Each entry should be 11x17, may use crayons, markers, poster paint, water colors, etc. but no 3-D materials. 5. Judged 20 pts each for originality, design, slogan, artwork and overall effectiveness of the message. Poetry Contest 2014 Theme - Good Stewards of Our Earth 1. Eligibility: K 9 th Grade. Special Education & English as a Second Language K-9 th. 2. Contest entrants are sponsored by a garden club or Generations of Gardeners enables a grandparent s local club as the sponsor regardless of child s residence. 3. Poems do not have to rhyme. Poems may be traditional verse, acrostics, blank verse, cinquains, diamond poems, limerick or Haiku. 4. All entries must be typed and titled. 5. Judged Title 10 pts, Content 40, Creativity 30, Style 20 High School Essay Contest 2014 Theme Choosing to Make a Difference for a Better World 1. Eligibility: 9 th -12 th Grade words, typed and titled Youth Sculpture Contest - Encouraging youth to keep our planet green Contest Rules: 1. Children in 4th grade through 8th grade will be eligible to enter the contest 2. Width of the sculpture can be no more than 8 1/2" x 11" Must include recycled material. Height should be proportional to width 3. Entries should include as many photographs as can be printed on the back of the entry form; (2) 4x6 photographs are recommended. Entry form on 4. 15 GARDEN CLUB COUNCIL OF FORT WORTH FLOWERCADE 2014 The Garden Club Council, Fort Worth Iris Society, and Fort Worth Rose Society presented their 60 th Annual Flowercade, April 26-27, 2014 at the Deborah Beggs Moncrief Garden Center in the Botanic Garden. Texas Under Six Flags Our Texas Heritage Reflected in Flowers provided the theme for flower designs and educational exhibits. In addition, over 400 horticulture exhibits from club member s yards were displayed. The photography section consisting of photographs of flowers, landscapes, insects, and historical sites were an added feature. Sales Tables of hanging baskets, flower design items, plants and gardening related items were for sale to the public at Market Day on Saturday. This event was enjoyed by the public and reflected the club member s creative talents through design, horticulture, photography, and educational exhibits. Hopefully, this Flower Show inspired the public to Grow The World Green. Page 15 of 19
