1 District II 2018 Fall Bulletin Harvest Seeds for Future Planting HELLO DISTRICT CLUBS, We have almost made it through this hot dry summer. I hope the heat made you more conscious of the importance of planting drought tolerant plants. This summer was not an exception, but I believe it is the new normal. Areas within District II are growing so quickly, water will become a BIG concern. Please do your part to conserve our water. This earth is your home. Treat it with respect and concern for future generations. Our District theme, Plant America, Harvest Seeds for Future Planting is continuing through this garden club year. Many clubs had programs on how to harvest seeds. I hope this was beneficial to your clubs and that you will continue to promote this theme. As you plan your projects, do not forget to take advantage of the many awards that are available, some have money included. Most of the awards are due November 1 st. Contact Karen Rice for award information. Our District II Convention is October 16 in Bridgeport and should be a fun day. Please consider making this an outing for your club members and support District. Hosting clubs put a lot of work into these conventions. We have a very knowledgeable new Council President, Barbara Baker. I hope a least one member from your club will attend each Council meeting, the third Wednesday of each month Sept. - Nov. and Jan. - May at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden Center. She has planned interesting programs and information to share. As club presidents, I ask you to encourage leadership from your members so that they are prepared to take offices and chairmanships. Tell them to accept new roles, as opportunities not work. I hope you start your club year with more members, projects, and fun. Send me an along the way to let me know what your club is doing. See you October 16 if not before. Where ever life plants you, bloom with grace. Barbara Bateman, District II Director District II Executive Board Website: District II Director Asst. The teacher and Principal are seeking Grants. In addition, the Club President has gone before the City of Keller and gotten approval to use a City facility for monthly meetings. The Club will be partnering with the City on existing projects and a few future projects. The Keller Club is off to a good start and attempting to keep our membership growing. Fort Worth Garden Club Council will meet on September 19, at the FWBG Garden Center. 9:30 social, 10:00 meeting. Gail Manning will present about monarch butterflies. Gail is an entomologist and is the conservation officer at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, where she has worked for 12 years. Gail has been tagging monarchs butterflies since 1994 and has conducted a family tagging event at the garden since Gail will talk about the amazing fall migration of the monarch butterfly, as it travels through Texas coming from Canada and headed to Mexico. She will give a preview of the October 6 Monarch Migration Festival. The Arlington Garden Club was established in 1926 and is one of the oldest continuously active garden clubs in Texas. The Club meets at the Fielder Museum in Arlington and has been meeting there for twenty+ years. Over these years, we have taken over the design, funding, planting, and care of the flowerbeds at the museum. The Monarch Waystation on the grounds is maintained by Master Naturalists. The South Gardens, where the Rose Garden is located, had drip irrigation installed in the spring, The Club raised the funds for the labor and mulch used in the project by its annual Spring Plant Sale. The City of Arlington, which owns the Museum property, donated all the irrigation components. Water conservation is very important to our Club, so we decided this would be a worthwhile project to take on for Our latest project deals with the North Garden. At one time, the roses were located there, but were moved in 2015 to the 5 From back left, Anita Garmon, Molly Hollar, Julia Burgen,. Bottom left, Adell Campbell and Martha May

6 South Gardens where they receive more sunlight. The Club decided to convert the North Garden to a Bird Habitat and a preliminary design has been developed. Work will begin on this garden in the Garden Club year. The Arlington Garden Club holds two plant sales throughout the year to fund our projects and to raise funds for donations to others who help care for our earth. The Fall Sale is in late September and involves the Garden Club only. It is our way to introduce ourselves to the community. The Spring Sale in April is a much more involved project that includes presentations, representatives from the City environmental departments, other gardening organizations, and vendors. It is always a fun event and one that is looked forward to by many in our City. We are excited about the future of our Club. We will celebrate our 100 th anniversary in Our hopes are that our Club will be an even greater asset to the community and that we continue to share our love of gardening and our commitment to the earth for many generations to come. In January 2018, a Colleyville Garden Club committee, chaired by Donna Ray and Melanie Drury, met to start planning the Club s 23 rd Promenade Garden Tour scheduled on Sunday, May 6, Committee members started looking at gardens in July 2017 to determine which gardens would be a good mix for Promenade. Five beautiful gardens in Colleyville were selected to showcase on our nationally recognized tour. The focus was on different types and sizes of gardens, each unique and special in its own way. Homeowners of four of the five gardens are members of Colleyville Garden Club. Colleyville Garden Club members volunteered to work as hosts and tour guides during the tour. Master Gardeners were located throughout each garden to answer questions. Additional highlights on the tour included a raffle and educational exhibits about bees and seeds. The popular plant sale featuring plants seen on the tour as well as some plants from members own gardens was held at Colleyville s historic Webb House. Shoppers are always standing in line waiting for the plant sale to open, so that they can be first and get the best plants available. The planning committee made a decision to change what had traditionally been a Post Promenade Party to a Pre-Promenade Party. The reason for this change was that after a long day of setting up, working and cleaning up after Promenade in the hot, Texas sun, many members and homeowners were too tired to party. The party was held on Friday, May 4, at the beautiful home of one of our members and was open to Colleyville Garden Club members and their guests, homeowners and sponsors. The party An Evening under the Stars was spectacular. Three food stations were set up - Italian, Indian and TexMex prepared by club members and attendees competed over who would take home items in the Silent Auction. The Colleyville Garden Club s Promenade Garden Tour was a great success. The homes were beautiful, it was a warm, sunny day and we had a tremendous turnout for the tour. Many thanks go to our members who work so hard to put this together, our Sponsors, and ticket vendors. Promenade is the club s only fundraiser and our proceeds go toward civic beautification projects and college scholarships. DISTRICT II SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS!!! In the Monarch Butterfly sanctuaries in Mexico, local people look for dead tagged butterflies. They collect them and Monarch Watch pays $5 per tag to recover the numbers. This practice brings money to the community and gives people a reason to protect the sanctuary. Several nature organizations will be celebrating the Monarch Butterfly Celebration with activities from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The Fort Worth Garden Club Council will be providing a portion of the tagging supplies for the children and tablecloths for the worktables. 7

8 Flowercade Every spring members Clubs participate in Flowercade, a design and horticultural garden show sponsored by the Fort Worth Garden Club Council. Members enter themed designs or specimens of flower, plants, or potted plants for judging and eagerly vie for the attractive ribbon awards. To enter the horticultural category, all members need do is walk out into their spring gardens and select a flower or branch to enter in the Flowercade show. Preparation of the entry is key, and how to prepare a specimen will be explained at the November, 2018 and March, 2019 Council meetings. The design section is more challenging, but great fun. The categories consist of large floral designs, table settings, and artistic crafts. The Fort Worth Garden Club Council holds workshops on design with examples of entries. More Flowercade information is coming at Council meetings and newsletters.
