Our May meeting on Sat, May 19 includes our Spring pot luck get together for EMG members after our education program. This month we have Dr. Raymond Cloyd of KSU giving us the specifics on helping our pollinators survive insecticides. He will address neonicotinoids, systemic insecticides and bees, and provide insight on the actual effects (based on science) on honeybees and bumblebees. From President Nancy Smelser: I want to congratulate and Thank everyone for the fabulous day we had for our Garden Show! It was such a beautiful sunny day and a great turnout. Thank you to our fearless leaders, Ginny and Debbie, and Sharon and Tom for their support, and to all the Booth coordinators and designers, and garden builders, artsy crafty crafters, raffle rustlers, garage sale gatherers, plant sale diggers and taggers, speakers, cashiers, workshop elves, greeters and guides, poster pasters, sign grabbers, flier printers and copiers, FB likers, cleanup crew, and all around carriers and haulers and deliverers and getters and do-ers, and don't forget all the spouses, family and friends who were volun-drafted to help, too! In short, EVERYONE who had a part in making the day such a huge success. "It takes a Village" and Master Gardeners make the best village people! I hope you are all full of great ideas to make our next Garden Show in 2020 even bigger and better! And now that it's finally Spring, hope we're all able to get out and concentrate on our OWN gardens! Thank you for all you do for our Master Gardener organization!

Most of these can count, except for the beginning gardening classes. o Webinars MJV/NCTC Monarch Conservation Webinar Register: Spring Garden Tour Congratulations to everyone involved in this year s very successful Garden Show! Next year s event will be the Spring Garden Tour and planning must begin now with the selection of the gardens to be included. We need additional gardens to be considered for the 2019 Spring Garden Tour. As an Extension Master Gardeners perhaps you would like to offer your garden for consideration? If so, please contact any member of the committee below. Also, if you know of someone who has a garden that you would like to nominate, please provide us with details and contact information. You will also get a chance to speak at the meeting, but this will reserve a space on the agenda. If you are planning to distribute handouts, papers, or publish advertisements on behalf of EMG s, these need to be reviewed by Marlin Bates, prior to distribution or publication, to make sure we are on track with Kansas State University requirements.

9 Organizational Meetings for Members Douglas County Extension Master Gardener Board Meeting, April 11, 2018 The meeting was called to order at 9AM. Present: Nancy Smelser, Sharon Laverentz, Mary Dillon, Martha Lanpher, Pam Patrick, Judy Adams, Cindy Hornburger, Susan Rendall, Sharon Ashworth, Tom Buller. Absent: Kathy Bourgeois Guests: Kathy Clifford, Phyllis Copt Grant Request: Kathy Clifford and Sharon Laverentz, as representatives of the Fairgrounds Demonstration Garden, requested $ in grant money from the board in order to landscape the front of the Extension Office building in time for the 100 th anniversary celebration in September The plants that will be purchased for the landscape project will also be used in the interior garden at the Garden Show on April 28, Cindy Hornberger moved that the request be considered, Pam Patrick seconded. Motion passed. Discussion followed. Monies currently available for this project are $1, from the county and $400 from the Garden Show budget. Funds are also available from the demonstration garden budget. The projected cost of the project is $3,200. The board sees this as an educational opportunity to teach the community about landscaping with native as well as traditional plants. Possibly a poster or handout could be made available on-site with landscaping information and tips. President Nancy Smelser called for a vote to grant the request for $ Martha Lanpher moved and Judy Adams seconded that the grant request be approved. Motion passed. Master Gardener Plant sale information: Phyllis Copt reported that if the Master Gardeners buy plants in quantities of 10 flats per each type, the AES will sell them to us at wholesale prices beginning in By reselling these at our own plant sale, we could realize a good profit. There would be a 10% sales tax plus a delivery fee. Public Relations report: Martha Lanpher said that information is being disseminated about the Garden Show. At this time, volunteers are needed to put posters in the downtown Lawrence area. The outlying areas are covered and so are the areas of Lawrence outside the central area. Vice-presidents report: none Secretary s report: none Treasurer s report: Current balance is $22, Income in March was $130.00, donations were $ and expenses were $ ($ of that is cash for the cash boxes at the Garden Show and will be returned). Cindy Hornburger moved and Judy Adams seconded that the treasurer s report be accepted. Motion passed. Treasurer Mary Dillon passed around paperwork concerning the Douglas County Extension Master Gardeners Special Projects Grant Program dated Mary plans to amend this document to fit

10 current circumstances. She will then submit the changes for approval and the new document will be included in the Member Handbook. Martha Lanpher moved and Susan Rendall seconded this process be approved. Motion passed. Mary presented bills to be paid as follows: Gift cards for speakers Cindy moved, Martha seconded, passed Kathy Clifford for plant materials- Cindy moved, Pam seconded, passed Sharon Laverentz for plant materials Cindy moved, Susan Seconded, passed All Things Vinyl for T-shirts Cindy moved, Susan seconded, passed Carol Anderson for Tom Swan Park, Pam moved, Susan seconded, passed Mary Dillon suggested wording changes to the Bill Paying Authorization document. These changes will allow Mary to reimburse an individual for payments even if the request is made after the board meeting if the following conditions are met 1) the committee coordinator has signed the request 2) the committee is still within their budget. If those conditions are not met, the treasurer will bring the request to the next regularly scheduled board meeting for approval. Martha Lanpher suggested additional wording to the effect that two people must sign all reimbursement requests. If the committee only has one person, the board treasurer shall sign the request. Susan Rendall moved and Cindy Hornburger seconded that the changes be approved. Motion passed. Members-at-Large: Susan Rendall: no report Judy Adams: Garden recommendations are needed for the 2019 Garden Tour. Volunteers are needed as well. Cindy Hornburger: Cindy is hosting a potluck for the class of 2017 on April 23 to find out how everyone is doing. Board members are welcome to attend. Pam Patrick: Mary Holm is the only person on the Farmer s Market committee and she would appreciate some help. Sharon Ashworth plans to contact Mary concerning this committee. Extension Agent Report: Tom Buller said that the 100 th anniversary of the Dg.Co. Extension agency will be celebrated September 16, Activities are in the planning stages. He also said that the $100 donation from the Meadowlark Garden Club, which was earmarked for scholarship, will be used to provide Master Gardening training to non-traditional gardeners in Lawrence. There will be a potluck picnic after the May 19 th business meeting. The social committee will help with arrangements. Upcoming: Native Plant sale June 2 Long Range Planning: Cindy Hornburger has created a matrix, which shows at a glance which goals have been met and which goals we are still working on. Sharon Ashworth will add additional information. This information will be presented at a later business meeting.

11 May 7 from the Long Range Planning committee will meet again. All board members are invited to attend. Sharon Ashworth will reserve a room. Douglas County Extension Master Gardeners Minutes of the April 18th, 2018 business meeting The meeting was called to order at 9AM by President Nancy Smelser She thanked Megan McGlinn, and Sharon Davis for treats and Laura Nutt for the door prize. Jim Blom showed a video of the burning of the grasses in the Fairgrounds Demo Garden. Susan Phillips provided a correction to the minutes as published in the update. Martha Lanpher is on the Public Relations committee, not the Public Education committee. Donna Black moved that the minutes be approved as corrected. Mary Wolfington seconded. Motion passed. President Smelser announced that Master Gardener Helen Everly died earlier in the month. There was a moment of silence in her memory. Vice President report: Kathy Bourgeois said we received a thank-you note from the Festival of Trees committee. That committee said that a total of $35,000 had been raised during that event. Kathy also suggested everyone visit the Spencer Museum to see the exhibit on Big Botany. Secretary report: none Treasurer s report: Mary Dillon said we have a current balance of $22, A grant was approved for the use of the Fairgrounds Demo Garden Committee to improve the landscaping in front of the Extension Office. Joan Reiber moved and Cindy Hornburger seconded that the treasurer s report be approved. Motion passed. Members-at-large reports: Susan Rendall reported that all the demonstration gardens are at last able to work in their gardens. Sharon Davis said that the 2019 Garden Tour committee needs garden recommendations. They will begin garden selection in June. Cindy Hornburger reminded the class of 2017 that there will be a get together for that class at her house on Tuesday, April 23 at 6PM. Please RSVP. Extension Agent Tom Buller said that the celebration for the 100 th anniversary of the Extension Office in Douglas County is in the planning stages. Phyllis Copt mentioned, that as part of the 100 th anniversary, anyone who would like to be part of an ad hoc committee to research gardening practices in Douglas County in the early years and/or the

12 beginnings of the Extension Council, please contact her or Tom. Jon Standing suggested we include the history of the Master Gardeners group as well. Sharon Ashworth: Volunteers are needed for the Hot line. Also, volunteers are needed for our booth at the Farmer s Market. Please contact Mary Holm or Vicki Lynn Helsel if you would like to speak on a topic. Sharon also mentioned that help is needed for shifts at the Earth Day booth this coming Saturday. Garden Show report: Co-chairs Ginny Turvey and Debbie Zabel asked for volunteers to put up yard signs advertising the Garden Show and thanked Printing Solutions for providing the signs. These signs can be used again since the date of the Garden Show was not printed. Four Cashiers per shift are needed for the show. We will take cash and credit cards. If you have receipts from expenditures for the Garden Show, please get them to Mary Dillon as soon as possible. You will also need to fill out the usual Payment Authorization Form and have it signed by the committee chairperson. We will set -up on Friday beginning at 9am for the sensory garden and garage sale. Other booths can begin set- up at noon. Bring extension cords if you need them. Avoid handing out lots of paper to visitors. If there is information they might want, have it in a format that can be photographed instead. Our break room will be in the Dreher building kitchen. There will be snacks. Cyd Schnacke asked that you bring any donations for the raffle on Friday. Carole Mitchell requested that you bring plants for the sale on Thursday. Please include a sign or label that gives the name, growing conditions and picture in bloom. Let Carole know if you want the plant back if it doesn t sell. If you have a price in mind, let Carole know. Otherwise the committee will price it. Plants MUST be in an acceptable flowerpot. No cottage cheese cartons please. Houseplants will be sold for a donation. Garage sale items can be picked up if needed. Call Diana Myers or Cathi Hamilton to arrange it. Jane Stiles-Potts asked for container gardens for the chairs that the Garden Art committee has decorated. All crafts must be brought to the Dreher building by 9AM on Thursday so they can be priced. Martha Lanpher said that a volunteer is needed to put up Garden Show posters in stores on Clinton Parkway. Business Cards are also available. She also urged members who are on Facebook to share two posts regarding the Garden Show. Volunteers are needed to help with the building workshops the day of the Garden Show. Other events: Our annual potluck will be May 19 after the business meeting and advanced education program. The social committee will provide paper goods.
