7 Chapter 32 9 Scope of Chapter 32 includes high-piled combustible storage Definition of high-piled storage: Storage of combustible materials in closely packed piles or combustible materials on pallets, in racks or on shelves where the top of the storage is greater than 12 feet in height. When required by the fire code official, high-piled combustible storage also includes certain high-hazard commodities, such as rubber tires (IFC , 202) 10 5

8 Construction documents must be submitted when high-piled storage may be present: When new structures are built Any change of occupancy or use When a storage permit is required (IFC ) 11 Construction documents must include: Floor plan of the building showing the location(s) and dimensions of high-piled storage areas; and, Usable storage height for each storage area; and, Number of tiers within each rack; and, Aisle dimensions between each storage array; and, (IFC ) 12 6

9 Construction documents must include: Distances between the storage commodity and sprinkler deflectors; and, Maximum pile volume for each storage array; and, Location and classification of commodities in accordance with 3203; and, Location of required FD access doors; and, (IFC ) 13 Construction documents must include: Location of commodities that are banded or encapsulated; and, Type of fire suppression and fire detection systems; and, Location of valves controlling the water supply of ceiling and in-rack sprinklers; and, (IFC ) 14 7

10 Construction documents must include: Type, location and specifications of smoke removal and curtain board systems, and, Dimensions and location of transverse and longitudinal flue spaces; and finally Additional information regarding required design features, commodities, storage arrangements, and fire protection features when required by the fire code official.
