2 Description DESCRIPTION Exposed ceiling constructions can loose their strength prematurely. To avoid this ceiling constructions are protected with fire resistant suspended ceilings. Openings in the suspended ceiling, for example for air diffusers, are only permitted if they can be closed in case of fire with suitable fire protection equipment, for example with the fire protection unit type BAK-250. Fire protection unit type BAK-250 with resistance class K90- U according to the general building supervisory approval Z is suitable for installation in suspended ceilings designed as panelled ceilings in screw-type and spatulated design that meet the requirements of an independent component of being fire-resistant for 90 minutes in the event of a fire from top or bottom and are classified in fire resistance class F90-A. The use in supply or return air installations is possible. The fire protection unit is fitted with two thermal trigger devices (72 C). One fusible link is integrated in the unit, the other fusible link is outside. This double trigger device increases the safety of the fire protection unit, as in case of fire the trigger and closing motion of the damper blade happens independently of whether the temperature occurs first inside the ventilation ducts or outside. A sliding connection pipe allows them to be adapted to different ceiling strengths, the sliding connection piece being delivered loose. The fire protection unit type BAK-250 must not be connected to return air ducts in commercial kitchens or to extractor fans. Also the use of the fire protection unit in ventilation ducts is not permitted, if function of a locking device is prevented because of extreme humidity or chemical contamination. The fire protection suitability test was carried out according to the construction and testing guidelines for shutter devices used to counter fire and smoke in ventilation ducts (fire damper) to be installed in fire resistant suspended ceilings. For maintenance, servicing, retrofitting, etc., it may be necessary to provide on-site inspection openings in suspended ceilings, shaft walls, etc. A sufficient number and size of these openings must be provided. Classification: Suspended ceiling Fire protection unit BAK-250 F90 A K90-U F60 A K60-U F30 A K30-U VENTILATION FITTINGS When the air diffusers are fitted into the BAK-250, a minimum distance of 5 mm must be guaranteed between the fittings and the inner housing faces. The following air diffusers, produced with non-flammable material, can be fitted into the fire protection unit: The fittings in the fire protection unit increase the sound volume of the air diffusers compared with the value in the diagram by +4 db(a). [N] per piece M / M Table 1: Weight of BAK-250 and dimensioning of the tension rod Accessories - Description To increase the protection, the fire protection unit type BAK- 250 can have the following parts fitted at an extra charge: electric spring return actuator (ELD-I-B), limit switch (ES 1 A). For fitting of a spring return actuator provide an inspection opening in the suspended ceilings to allow regular maintenance of parts mounted outside of BAK-250. The spring return actuator allows connection to a smoke detection system (e.g. SCHAKO RMS) so that the fire protection unit closes even in case of smoke propagation and temperatures < 72 C, thus, preventing smoke from spreading in the building. 3 Description CONNECTION OF VENTILATION DUCTS The fire protection unit type BAK-250 must only be connected to ventilation ducts made of non-flammable materials (Construction class A to DIN 4102). The ventilation ducts used must not exert substantial forces on the fire protection unit or the suspended ceiling in case of fire. The required bellow expansion joints (flexible connection pieces) must be designed as flammable, elastic connection pieces made of at least normally inflammable building materials (EN ) and must be installed between the shutoff device and the ventilation duct. Flexible part of the connection piece (polyester fabric) must have a minimum length lmin of 100 mm when mounted. Flexible ventilation ducts made of steel or aluminum can be used instead of the flexible connection pieces. MAINTENANCE The testing of the fire protection unit must be carried out according to the maintenance instructions before commissioning or delivery. After commissioning of the ventilation installation, all shut-off devices must be subjected to maintenance twice a year. If no function faults have been detected within the scope of two successive maintenances, then the fire protection units only need to be maintained once a year. It is advisable to keep maintenance records. The fire protection unit must be fitted in a way that inner viewing, maintenance and cleaning is possible in fitted condition. For maintenance purpose, the air diffuser can be dismounted from the room side such that additional inspection openings in the suspended ceilings are not necessary unless there is no spring return actuator installed. Thus, during a fire, the trigger and closing motions of the damper leaf occur independently of whether the temperature > 72 C first occurs on the inside or on the outside of the duct system. The breakage of one of the fusible links closes the damper leaf and locks it into place. The damper leaf can no longer be locked in the OPEN position, before the fusible link is replaced. 5 Inserted ceiling area Fire protection unit BAK-250 Installation details INSTALLATION DETAILS Installation The fire protection unit type BAK-250 is connected to the the ceiling with four suspensions. This is followed by mounting the suspended ceiling. Then the air diffuser is connected to the suspended ceiling or to the plenum box using a screw connection (SM mounting). The tension rod dimensions are calculated from the loads of their own weight, of the connected ducts and of the air diffuser. 8 Maintenance or functional test MAINTENANCE OR FUNCTIONAL TEST Polluted and damp air can impair the continuous operational safety. This is why, after commissioning the ventilation installation, all shut-off devices must be subjected to a functional test at a six-month interval according to section 5 of the general building supervisory approval Z If two consecutive functional tests show no defects, the shut-off devices only have to be tested at a yearly interval. If maintenance agreements are made for ventilation installations, it is recommended to include the functional tests in these maintenance agreements. The maintenance of the shut-off damper can be performed on the bottom side of the fire-resistant suspended ceiling. The air diffuser should be easy to dismount. If necessary, cleaning openings can be provided for an additional cleaning of the shut-off damper area which is not accessible from the bottom side. If there is a limit switch, drive etc. available, an inspection opening is necessary in the suspended ceilings or accessibility has to be ensured in the intermediate ceiling area. Inspection openings in the suspended ceilings should also be considered in order to allow the recurring inspections of safety systems which may become necessary. There is a risk of injury during functional tests. Therefore, to avoid any cutting, crushing, impact or other possible injuries, personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn. 1. Functional check Check all visible parts inside the housing. Carefully perform the required cleaning work, for example in order to avoid damage to the sealings. Figure 10: Sectional view of BAK-250 diffuser Manual trigger device Check the trigger device (pos.7) including the fusible link of the trigger unit 1 and 2. Remove soiling which could impair the function. If there are no visible signs of damage, perform the installation of the trigger device in the reverse order. To do so, during opening of the shut-off damper make sure that the locking bolt (pos.3) is pulled back to release the shut-off damper. 1.1 Removing the air diffuser 1.2 Trigger devices The shut-off damper (pos. 1) is held by the trigger bar (pos. 6). For the trigger device (pos. 7) to be completely visible o- ver the connection pieces (pos.4), the shut-off damper must be pressed up. Before loosening the three hexagon nuts M6 (pos.5), the shut-off damper must be supported manually to avoid spontaneous closing of the shut-off damper. After loosening the hexagon nuts, tilt the trigger device to the connection piece and remove it from the unit. Now, you can put the shut-off damper in closing position. When closed, the locking bolt (pos. 3) overruns the locking profile (pos. 2) and locks the shut-off damper in the closed position. 9 Maintenance or functional test Trigger device with electric spring return actuator ELD-I-B Electric system check Actuate the electric pushbutton (on-site), this interrupts the power supply to the spring return actuator (pos.20); as a result, the shut-off damper must close automatically. Press the on-site electric pushbutton again which restores the power supply to the electric spring return actuator; as a result, the adjusting mechanism moves the shut-off damper to the OPEN position again. The pushbutton (pos.21) is pressed on the thermoelectric trigger device (pos.22), this interrupts the power supply to the spring return actuator. After that the shut-off damper must close automatically. Depending on the on-site wiring, there are two options: 1. Either the spring return actuator opens the shut-off damper immediately if the pushbutton is released, or 2. The shut-off damper continues moving and closes, even if the pushbutton is released. In this case apply voltage to the spring return actuator (onsite) in order to bring the shut-off damper into the OPEN position again. 1.3 Bearings All hinges must be checked for tight seat. Loosened screws must be tightened and sluggishly running hinges must be lubricated with resin- and acid-free oil. Damaged hinges must be replaced. 1.4 Seal Replace the sealings which have become porous due to ageing. Paste the sealings which come off of the surface they are attached to. 2. Elimination of defects If defects have been detected during specified maintenance, they must be eliminated immediately. Defective parts may only be replaced with new original spare parts by the manufacturer. All moving parts must move smoothly and the shut-off damper must close or open correctly after triggering. For the fire protection unit to function properly again, the shut-off damper must be returned to the OPEN position.
