Digital Addressable Lighting Interface
Who started DALI? It is supported by major manufacturers of ballasts Initially promoted by: And now including: BAG, Erco, Insta, Johnson controls, Magnetek, FCS lighting, Hadler and others
What is DALI? It is a defined method of controlling electronic ballasts via a digital control signal A protocol for load interfaces and dimmers A physical layer for load interfaces and dimmers An addition to the existing European electronic ballast performance standard EN60929 annex E
DALI - AG AG-DALI the DALI Activity Group is based on the statute of ZVEI, which is the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association. Open to all and supported by the members Web site
Why digital? Digital signals are less sensitive to noise Digital signals eliminate volt drop problems of analogue control Digital signals can provide a much wider range of information than can be provided by an analogue system Digital components are becoming smaller, making it easier to incorporate more intelligence into less volume
Why is it needed? Technological advances in electronics and building communication systems have not been implemented into lighting electronics More intelligence can be incorporated into fittings Low cost local room control Possibility for ballasts to be incorporated into a building management system
Two wire control DALI Benefits The power and signal share the same wires Polarity free control signal Reduces installation problems
DALI Benefits Low baud rate of 2400 Insensitive to cable type and cable topology Small data packet size Maximises system response High amplitude and slew rate limited Maximises noise immunity and minimises unwanted emissions
DALI Benefits Addressing 64 addresses can be controlled independently via the same control wire
Analogue switching Mains for loads must be fed through control device
Digital switching Luminaires can be switched ON/OFF via the control signal Mains and dimming circuits are independent, allowing flexibility
DALI Benefits Grouping 16 Groups can be configured. Each address can belong to more than one group.
DALI Benefits Grouping 16 Groups can be configured. Each address can belong to more than one group.
DALI Benefits Grouping 16 Groups can be configured. Each address can belong to more than one group.
DALI Benefits Typical office layout Totally flexible for easy reconfiguration
DALI Benefits Scenes 16 Different scenes can be stored in each device (ballasts/converter or dimmer) for different tasks and moods. Recalled from a pushbutton as an example SCENE 1 DEVICE
DALI Benefits Scenes Fade time can be programmed for each individual address FADE TIME: 5sec. SCENE 1 DEVICE
DALI Benefits DALI uses a logarithmic regulation curve such that the human eye observes the light changes as linear. 100% 1% 0%
DALI - Benefits Backchannelling (two way communication) The status of a DALI system can be checked by software: Ballast status (on/off) Lamp load (%) Lamp status (fault/ ballast in standby) Address
DALI- LONWORKS gateway INFORMATION BETWEEN LON AND DALI MASTER CONTROL (BROADCAST ON/OFF/UP/DOWN) SCENE CONTROL (BROADCAST SCENE nn) DIAGNOSTICS (QUESTIONS FROM LON) LON GATEWAY DALI LUX LEVEL AND PRESENCE DETECT. INFO (ONLY FROM DALI) ANSWERS TO DIAGNOSTIC QUESTIONS LPT-10 NO NEED FOR EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY
System Guidelines Up to 64 addresses/system Up to 250mA/system - say 10-15mA power consumption per control - 2mA power consumption for ballasts (to standard) Up to 300m cable length using 0.5sq.mm VDC power supply from units via DALI network or PSU-unit Two core cable mm 2 (mains rated) Each system can be configured into 16 groups Each unit in a DALI system can be programmed with 16 different scenes Multiple DALI systems can be linked together via building management network
Lighting control Costs v Function
Applications DALI can be used anywhere controlling of fluorescent lighting is a requirement, from smallest office to the largest system (via a gateway to Building Management System, for example LON) Intelligent luminaries Simple wiring Energy saving Middle size rooms Stand alone systems Simple wiring Easy configuration and flexible to use Energy saving with constant light control
OFFICE ROOM With suspended fitting
Installation example, Office A suspended fitting with 3x28T5 down - and up-light and multi-sensor Functions; PIR sensor I.R. receiver and programming Daylight control On/off and dimming via cord control Installation needs no re-wiring of mains
OFFICE ROOM With two fittings
OFFICE ROOM Small office/office cell Two fittings with 1 ballast each and multi-sensor. Functions; Presence sensor Panel control with scenes or Daylight control I.R. Remote control and programming Benefits: Only extra installation of control wire to sensor/panel (no central unit) Comments: Manual control of light functions. Easy scene setting for light modes. Off only from presence sensor.
CLASS ROOM
CLASS ROOM
CLASS ROOM I.R.control Door panel on/off Room light CONVERTER to 1-10V Fittings for room light and converter controlling blackboard fittings. Functions; Presence sensor Panel control with scenes Rotary for individual control I.R. Remote control and programming Benefits: Daylight control of room light, off only for both room and blackboard fittings.
CONFERENCE ROOM
CONFERENCE ROOM
CONFERENCE ROOM Fitting, suspended. 1pcs. I.R.control Fittings, ceiling mounted. 6pcs. Door panel on/off Whiteboard Spotlight Whiteboard Scene panel Dimmer Functions; Presence sensor Panel control with scenes Slides for individual control I.R. Remote control and programming Benefits: DALI can use one channel units, that will build the system unit by unit, exactly to what is required.
Mirror HOTEL ROOM
HOTEL ROOM FITTINGS Mirror
HOTEL ROOM CONTROL PANELS D Mirror F C B A
HOTEL ROOM CONTROL PANELS CARD SLOT A Door: Key card or scene panel B Bath room: On Off panel C Table and mirror lamp: On Off panel D Bed: Slider controls for lamps and scene panel F Remote control have same functions as scene panel, and raise / lower. All panels works as I.R. receiver.
LON BUILDING MANAGER SYSTEM HOTEL ROOM CONTROL UNITS Dimmer 800W Dimmer 800W Dimmer 800W Dimmer 800W Relay & Supply Relay & Supply LON Gateway Dimmer and relay functions all depend on light source, and need of dimming. Important to note is that 5% lower voltage to lamp with low voltage halogen, doubles the lifetime. Note: Mains are not shown in drawing.
