8 1. GENERAL INFORMATION VM-5T OVERVIEW This is a highly reliable dual channel thrust monitor which monitors the bearing vibration of rotating machinery. Both a 10-slot rack mounting type and a single-unit independent type with a built-in power supply are available so that it can respond flexibly to any system design from medium and small scale rotating machinery to TSI. The monitor inputs thrust signals from the VK Series Vibration Transducers and displays them on LCD. It can also set ALERT and DANGER alarm levels in any high and low limit directions independently to detect machine failures early on and inform the operator of these failures, thereby preventing damage to the thrust bearing in advance. It has a built-in voting logic function which outputs a contact signal corresponding to two channels by OR for an ALERT alarm or two channels by AND for a DANGER alarm, thereby ensuring highly reliable shaft position monitoring. It also has a built-in self-diagnostic function to inform the operator of input transducer failures, thereby preventing rotating machinery from false shutdowns. FEATURES Conforms to API St d 670 The monitor is available as a single unit independent type or a rack mounting type. Has a self-diagnostic function. Allows the operator to change each setting even in the field. Important information such as measured value, alarm set value and gap voltage is normally displayed. Can isolate recorder output (option). LED display / contact output (DANGER / ALERT alarm). LED display / contact output (Input abnormal alarm). Mandatory Caution For alarm output wiring proceed as described in the instruction manuals for the VM-5G Single Unit Instrument Rack and VM-5Y Relay Module Unit used in combination with this monitor unit. If megger test is made on the signal cable between transducer and monitor, disconnect the cable from transducer and monitor. Be sure to discharge the charged electric load before connecting the cable to the transducer and monitor. If this caution is not adhered to, the transducer and monitor could be damaged. Prior to factory shipment, the timed OK channel defeat function is set to OFF. Therefore, the ALERT and DANGER alarms are not cut off even if the OK alarm is ready to be output. -1-

Prohibition Mandatory INTERCONNECTION OF TRANSMISSION CABLE Connection of signal transmission cable For interconnection between the VK driver and the monitor, or between the VK driver and safety barrier, and safety barrier and monitor, make sure to use 3-core shielded cables or pair shielded standard 3-wire instrument cables, since the signal transmitted is weak. (Do not use unshielded cables or non-pair shielded multicore cables as the measured values could be affected by external noise.) Recommended cables Cable Recommended Note CVVS (3-core shielded cable) Conduit pipe Shielded wire INSTRUMENT CABLE (Pair shielded standard 3-wire) Conduit pipe Outside shielded Shielded wire Excellent Good Recommended cabling as per API st d 670 Normal: Silver-plated braid Recommended: Copper tape shielded (Core wire: Soft copper wire) Use conduit pipe (cable rack) for wiring. Although vibration and displacement signals can be transmitted in one instrument cable, use separate cables, because a high vibration signal exerts injurious influence over other displacement and vibration signals. Recommended: Outside shield of aluminum or copper tape. Provide separate cabling for pulse signals (phase marker, revolution) and for Mandatory displacement and vibration signals. Avoid running signal transmission cables together with control and power cables. Install all cables in conduit pipes or on cable racks. -5-
