New Approaches to Barricade and Warning Lights in Work Zones John D. Bullough, Mark S. Rea Lighting Research Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 2014 ITS-NY Twenty-First Annual Meeting Saratoga Springs, NY June 12-13, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
LEDs and barricade/warning lights Most beacons and flashing light signals used for warning are simple flashing units Light source may be filament, strobe, or light emitting diode (LED) LED beacons and signals use less power than halogen (6-16 watts versus watts) LED sources available in wide range of colors LED matrix design may permit new configurations such as animation Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
Barricade light color and visual information Question: How does barricade light color influence drivers interpretation? Survey of 86 respondents: What action should a driver take if a barricade light of a particular color is seen (yellow, red, green)? Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
Comprehension survey results Flashing yellow: 67%: slow down 8%: proceed 24%: other Flashing red: 62%: stop 9%: slow down 29%: other Flashing green: 71%: proceed 7%: speed up 1%: slow down 20%: other Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
Discussion of comprehension survey Use of red/green lights could be problematic in work zones Based in part on conflicts in comprehension in present survey and according to Factor et al. (2010) Based in part on noncompliance to Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for work zones Field tests went forward using animated yellow barricade lights Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
Animated barricade lights Conventional barricade lights use a flashing yellow light New configurations were evaluated in a field test Expanding: Size increases to provide added warning ( slow down, caution ) Sweeping: Signal face illuminates from left to right or vice versa to indicate direction of lane shift ( turn/bear left, slow down ) Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
Field test Participants drove along a rural roadway where a simple simulated work zone was set up Either with or without a necessary lane change to navigate through Barricade lights were either flashing, expanding or sweeping Test vehicle equipped with GPS sensor and data logger to record speed, lane position Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
Field test results Compared to the conventional flashing light: Drivers slowed down slightly more (by 1 mph) in response to the expanding light Drivers changed lanes sooner (by 15 meters) in response to the sweeping light Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
What other properties of warning beacons are important? Intensity Warning beacons need to be bright enough to be seen, during daytime and nighttime, but not so bright that they cause glare Laboratory experiments were conducted to measure response times to flashing warning beacons and impacts on hazard visibility Participants viewed a target near or away from a simulated truck with a warning beacon with adjustable peak intensity (80, 180, 530 candelas) Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
Response time results When viewed at night (on- or off-axis), peak intensity of 180 candelas provided shortest response times ( ) When viewed in daytime (on- or off-axis), peak intensity of 530 candelas was needed for shortest response times Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
Hazard visibility results (glare) Hazard visibility during daytime was never affected by the warning beacon Hazard visibility at night was reduced slightly by the warning beacon with the highest peak intensity (530 candelas) Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
Summary Warning beacon performance depends upon several factors: Animations, particularly sweeping motion, could provide cues to change lanes sooner Intensity: Higher intensities are needed in daytime than nighttime; too high can result in reduced visibility at night Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. All rights reserved.
