16 Annex E: Material properties 1. Geometric properties grading Special aggregate grating because of particular use eg crushed rock 0/31.5DG 80 Changed from single size (2007) to all-in aggregate ease of compaction

Physical properties Los Angeles Coefficient (LA) An indicator of resistance to fragmentation Limit set at < or = 30 (previously LA40 improved strength) Water Absorption (WA) An indicator of potential durability Limit set at < or = 2% for gravels and non-limestone rock Irish Concrete Federation to carry out survey Limit for limestone may be reduced subject to survey by Irish Concrete Federation Magnesium sulfate soundness (MgSO4) An indicator of potential durability This test must be done (previously only when WA exceeded 2%) Limit set at < or = 25%

18 Annex E: Material properties 3. Chemical properties Acid soluble sulfate (AS) Limit maintained at < or = 0.2% Total sulfur (S) Limits revised as follows: S < 0.3% S between 0.3% and 1% (inclusive) - Petrographic Assessment required S > 1% - Not suitable

Geological & petrographic properties Geological description of the aggregate (end product) Professional geologist - to identify deleterious rock types (if present)on the basis of mineralogical composition. All information on lithologies and mineral recorded Mudrock most likely to swell and to contain framboidal pyrite Mudrock content limited < 10% Petrographic assessment of the aggregate (end product) Only carried out when total sulfur content is between 0.3% and 1% Professional geologist/ petrographer Thin Section petrographic assessment & (if necessary) X-Ray Diffraction Primarily to establish the form & distribution of pyrite present (if any) Predominantly reactive pyrite means it is unsuitable as hardcore for use under concrete floors Professional geologist to make a declaration taking all parameters into account to deem it suitable. If Pyrrhotite is present a limit of < or = 0.4% S

EN 16236:2012) Assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVoCP) System 2+ (Previously System 4) Initial Type Testing (ITT)* A new source of aggregates Major change in raw materials Factory Production Control (FPC)* Organisation, control procedures, inspections & tests, records, control of non-conformities, handling, storage & conditioning of production areas, transport and packaging, training. 23 Annex E Procedures for production 2. Sampling and testing plan Note 1: Test frequencies may be revised based on the advise of the professional geologist. Note 2: Test frequencies are generally related to periods of production. A period of production is defined as a full week, month, or year of production working days.(i.s.en )

24 Annex E: Material properties Geological assessment of the quarry deposit Professional geologist initially, annually and at a major change of lithology (or as per Prof Geo) Initial assessment to identify & map proportions of lithologies, document problematical lithologies, evidence of reactive pyrite, reference any limitations on use. I.S. EN (6.3.4 Knowledge of the raw material)

25 Annex E Procedures for production 3. Traceability The Declaration of Performance (DoP) should include a statement declaring Annex E material as a special aggregate required for a particular end use i.e. unbound granular fill (hardcore) for use under concrete floors and footpaths. The relevant delivery docket should state that the material complies with Annex E of SR 21. The following description should be used on dockets: "GRANULAR FILL SR21:2013 ANNEX E"

26 Annex E Procedures for production 4. Certification Materials produced in compliance with I.S. EN and SR 21 Annex E should only be supplied by producers who have achieved third party certification in accordance with assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVoCP) system 2+. CE Marking Declaration of performance
