Basic information is given on service facilities, utility systems, safety gear, etc and also briefly on organisation and money allocation. Chemical laboratory safety is detailed in the booklet General Safety Regulations (also available at All personnel working in our laboratories should carefully read them. This applies also to the additional rules and regulations that may apply to the departments or to a particular laboratory or instrument. Whenever you feel uncertain about the contents of an instruction, a warning poster or other important texts (especially if written in Swedish), ask your host or supervisor to explain it! 4 About Kemicentrum and the Organisation of the University Kemicentrum is one of the largest research units for chemistry in Scandinavia. It was founded in the late sixties and includes the Chemistry Sections of the Faculty of Science and of the Faculty of Technology. Kemicentrum hosts the following three departments: Department of Chemical Engineering Department of Food Technology, Engineering and Nutrition Department of Chemistry The staff amounts to around 450 persons divided into approximately 180 faculty members, 160 postgraduate students and 110 technical and administrative personnel. More than 900 students attend the various undergraduate programs and courses in chemistry and chemical engineering. The turnover is approximately 475 million SEK. About 19% is used for undergraduate programs, and 81% for research and postgraduate studies. MONEY ALLOCATION In round figures, about 53% of the income at Kemicentrum is directly allocated by the Swedish Parliament. Lund University receives one amount for the undergraduate programs and one for each of the faculties for research purposes. This money is then distributed to the departments of the university. Research councils and other external funds supply the rest of the income. This is allocated directly to research groups as grants for short-term or long-term projects. Grants as well as portioned money are then charged for rent and other overhead costs. ORGANISATION OF THE UNIVERSITY The vast majority of Swedish universities are in principle part of one organisation with one set of rules (The Higher Education Ordinance, Högskoleförordningen) and share the same pool of money. The rules and the money allocation principles allow, however, for many local decisions. Lund University is headed by the University Board and its chairman, the Rector Magnificus or Vice-Chancellor. On the next level are the faculties and below them the departmental level. Service facilities Maps of Kemicentrum are found on pages 6-7. In the center of building I you find common facilities like information desk, library and cafeteria. 11 Safety installations This section describes some permanent installations aimed at improving the safety of personnel and goods. Other aspects of safety are dealt with in the General Safety Regulations. ENTRANCES - CARDS AND SAFETY During working-hours (7.30 am pm) entrances A, B and E are open. Outside working-hours, all entrances are locked. Between pm am only entrances A and E can be entered with an entrance card. The premises are moreover divided into sections by locked internal doors. To get in, you need an entrance card. If you are only staying for a short period you can get a guest card at your department. If you are staying for more than 3 months you should get a proper card. Check with your administrator that you are registered in the LUCAT and LADOK systems. You then go to LTH Studiecentrum (See map on page 8). Don t forget to bring your passport! Opening hours are found on University departments are popular targets for thieves. Therefore, be careful not to leave valuables lying around! We try also, however, to keep thieves out as far as possible. Thus, You are not allowed to "help" anybody get in through a locked door! Excuses like "I forgot my card" or "My card doesn t work" are not acceptable! It is strictly forbidden to lend the card to someone else! Please note, also, that if you hold a locked entrance door open for more than 30 seconds, a warning buzzer will sound. (You shut off the buzzer by closing the door!) ELEVATOR, TOILET AND OXYGEN ALARMS All elevators are provided with alarm telephones connected to the fire department. If you get stuck in the elevator, press the button (more than 10 sec.) until you get an answer. Explain your situation and you will be rescued as soon as possible. Some toilets have special equipment for disabled persons, including alarm buttons. When the button is pressed, it may take a while before assistance arrives, especially outside working-hours. Cold stores are also equipped with alarm buttons. There is a heavy fine for misuse of these alarms. In the room for filling liquid nitrogen there is an alarm for oxygen. If the oxygen level drops below 20 % the alarm will start to flash. Leave the room immediately! If the fan system doesn t start when entering the room leave the room and contact the caretakers and tell them about the problem. 9
12 FIRE ALARMS Measures to be taken in case of fire are detailed in the General Safety Regulations. All buildings are equipped with fire alarms. These are activated automatically, by smoke detectors, or manually, by pressing a button. (You should learn the location of the nearest button, as well as of fire protection equipment!) The fire alarms may be activated for other reasons than fire and smoke, e.g. imminent explosion risk, or accidental gas release. The alarm is a persistent series of short, loud bell rings. In building I the alarm can even be activated by a pressure drop in the sprinkler system, as well as if the pressure in the ventilation system s main line is too low. When you hear the alarm, you must leave the building immediately! If it can be done without delay, take your clothes, car keys, etc, and shut down computers and other sensitive equipment (a fire often causes power failure). Do not return until so advised by the fire department personnel. There is a heavy fine for causing false alarm, whether deliberate or accidental. STRICTLY FORBIDDEN Smoking is strictly forbidden anywhere, anytime! Note that smoking easily triggers off the smoke detectors and renders you a heavy fine. Dogs and other pets are not allowed within Kemicentrum. Utilities Generally, our supplies of electrical power, water, gas, compressed air, etc, are very dependable, as is the ventilation system, notably the suction power in the fume hoods. However, occasional shutdown of these utilities is unavoidable. When shutdowns are planned, you will be alerted well in advance. Warning notices are posted in places like entrance doors. The notices have conspicuous colours, usually orange. Please note these warnings and take the necessary precautions! If you are not sure of the contents of a warning, ask your host or supervisor! In case of power failure, ensure that the screens of all fume hoods are closed. This will prevent leakage of solvent vapour as the ventilation stops during the electrical outage. Furthermore, sensitive equipment should be shut down in order to prevent it from being damaged when the electricity turns on. In the General Safety Regulations, inside cover, you find where to turn in case of a pipe burst or a similar accident. 10
13 Lecture halls, seminar rooms and conference rooms Lecture halls, seminar rooms and Kemicentrums conference rooms are all found in building I. Here you also find the library and the cafeteria. BOOKING The maps on pages 6-7 show where the lecture halls, seminar rooms and conference rooms are located. Bookings are managed by the Information desk (extension no ). In the lecture halls, eating or drinking is not allowed. Lecture halls and seminar rooms should be in good order when you leave, that is blackboard cleared, lights out, windows closed, etc. Transport and parking General information about how to get to Kemicentrum is found on BUSES From Lund Central Station you can take a bus to Kemicentrum: Buses: 20, 21, 166 and 169 From: Lund C (Train station) Stop: LTH or IDEON Bus: 6 From: Lund C (Train station) Stop: LTH The bus stops are marked out on the map on page 8. Information are given at Skånetrafikens website, ARRIVING BY CAR There are several car parks around Kemicentrum. If you come by car regularly, you can buy a parking permit, valid for one/two terms. For occasional parking, day tickets can be bought in the parking meter or in the Information desk. Ask your administrator for advice. Parking is not allowed outside the car parks. BIKE For bicycle parking use the special racks outside the entrances. It s strictly forbidden to bring the bicycle inside. The cleaning personnel will not be happy if your bicycle can be traced from the entrance to your office! 11
