2 Cultivation DAFFODILS & NARCISSI (ONLY TOP-SIZE, DOUBLE NOSED BULBS SUPPLIED) Naturalizing Daffodils and Narcissi in Grass, etc. Most Daffodils and Narcissi are suitable for naturalizing but in very heavy soils, preference should be given to stronger growing kinds e.g. Trumpet varieties and many Large-Cupped. They are all admirably adaptable for grassy slopes and banks, where they should be freely planted. A splendid effect is obtained when Trumpet and other varieties are grouped separately, scattered on the ground and planted where they fall. Soil and Its Treatment. Daffodils and Narcissi will thrive in any well-cultivated and welldrained garden soil. In preparing the ground for planting, dig deeply and if well-rotted stable or cow manure is available this may be advantageously worked in 10 to 16 'inches deep so as not to come into immediate contact with the bulbs. Never use fresh manure of any kind at planting time. On poor and dry sandy soils we recommend a dressing of bone meal at a rate of about 1 oz. per square yard to be sprinkled over the surface of the ground after planting. The bulbs should be covered with soil to a depth of once and a half to twice its own depth, measuring the bulb from base to shoulder. TIME OF FLOWERING The relative period of flowering of the different varieties out of doors we have denoted by means of numbers after the names, (1) being the earliest, (7) being the latest. The earliest varieties are normally in flower at the beginning of March and the latest varieties usually flower during the latter part of April. At the end of descriptions of certain varieties we have included 'L.L.' to indicate long lasting varieties and 'V.L.L.' to indicate very long lasting varieties, in flower. HEIGHT The heights given in inches are as recorded at our nurseries. COLLECTIONS FOR BOWLS, POTS AND EARLY FORCING Customers may rely upon receiving the right varieties, as we take particular care to select suitable sorts for indoor culture Bulbs, 6 each of 4 varieties, our selection $ Bulbs, 10 each of 5 varieties, our selection $ Bulbs, 10 each of 10 varieties, our selection $68.50 FOR THE GARDEN Are made up from our named varieties and include selections from the most important Divisions, all of proven merit which will be a valuable addition to the garden. Purchasers may rely upon receiving extremely good value Bulbs, 10 each of 5 varieties, our selection $ Bulbs, 10 each of 10 varieties, our selection $ Bulbs, 25 each of 10 varieties, our selection $ QUALITY OF FLOWER Each season we go carefully over our Daffodil collection with a view to recording the quality of each variety. This we have indicated by two, three or four asterisks. after the name of each variety. We hope this may be useful to customers when making their selections. DEPTH TO PLANT Failures with bulbs are most frequently due to their having been planted too deeply or too shallow. A good general rule to follow is to cover the bulb with soil once and a half to twice its own depth, measuring the bulb from the base to shoulder. Thus a daffodil bulb measuring two inches from base to shoulder should be covered with 3-4 inches of soil.
