8 MEVRS Rose Lore February 2015 Vermi-compost: Worm Castings, The organic pest repellant Presented By Sena Kassim Sena (aka the Worm Whisperer) holds degrees and certificates in Herbalism, nutrition, landscaping, arboriculture and water harvesting. Edible gardens, vermicomposting and water harvesting are all part of her integrated landscape designs. Steve Sheard s Story I had heard about the use of Worm Casting from fellow Consulting Rosarian Retta Marconi-Dooley and Retta wrote an article for the Rose Lore in I said to myself: OK, I will try it sometime! January 2014 Gardeners World was going out of business and was selling Worm Castings, 3 cubic feet for $1.00. I could not resist and picked up 20 bags and pushed them into my shed. The middle of March 2014 I found my roses covered with all those nasty bugs, Green Fly, White Fly. I remembered my bags of worm castings and put a shovel full around each bush. Within a week my roses were CLEAN!!! Other than washing for spider mite and feeding I did nothing more to my roses. In November 2014 I exhibited roses in our MEVRS rose show that did not even have Thrip damage! JANUARY,

9 An internet search revealed: A key element for insect repellency is the level of chitinase-producing organisms. Chitinase is an enzyme that will dissolve chitin. The exoskeleton of bugs is made of chitin [so obviously they don't want to hang out where their skeletons will get dissolved!]. Bugs have various detection mechanisms to determine the level of chitinase in plants and soil. Once the chitinase level is high enough, they will leave the area. Worm castings test with a very high level of chitinase-producing organisms. (From Good things to know about worm castings). From Uncle Jims Worm Blog: Worms are ECO friendly as they provide free fertilizer and keep kitchen waist out of the landfills. Worms make great Pets Grand Children love them, you can go on vacation for a month, no special food they eat anything coming from the kitchen! No Vet bills, quiet, provide environmental friendly waist. A simple home to live in. 10 Starting From Scratch Mary Van Vlack Introduction: On several occasions our excellent editor, Jeannie Cochell, has requested that members submit articles to provide a variety of content and voices in the Phoenix Rose Society newsletter, and each time I have felt both guilty and inadequate. Guilty because as former editor of the Scottsdale RS newsletter and current editor of the PSW District newsletter, I understand very well why she needs these contributions and I know I could write - something. But inadequate because I could not think of anything to write about that anyone would find interesting and is not already well-covered by Jeannie and other PRS members. Last spring, however, a topic dropped itself at my feet, and Jeannie said she was willing to consider it. After 32 great years, my husband, David, and I decided to sell our home in Arcadia and move to something smaller. Our former home was 4300 square feet with a 25,000 square foot yard intensively landscaped and at one time almost 200 rose bushes, while our new place is 30% smaller with an 8000 square foot yard and no roses at all, hence my title, Starting From Scratch. As I thought about the idea, it began to sound more like a series than just one article; Jeannie says she s willing, so. Part 1: The Thorny Path From Someone With Roses In Their Yard to Rosarian Before writing about our work to make a new rose garden, I thought I d write something about how I got to be where I am with roses. My father was the gardener in our family, and in addition to the big Midwestern vegetable garden, grape vines, apple tree, and foundation plantings of flowering shrubs, he planted roses. A row of hybrid teas marched along the edge of the veggies, and in the front he planted what was meant to be a hedge of Pinocchio, a pink Kordes floribunda from the 1940 s. Pinocchio never amounted to much, but the Peace rose in the back yard drew rave reviews from everyone who saw it. In 1973 David and I bought our first home in Denver, and with it came, you guessed it, a rose garden. The house was a 2-story Victorian cottage in Washington Park, and the previous owner (who had lived there since the 1930 s) was a gardener. In addition to an overgrown privet hedge in front and a perennial bed the length of the back yard, off the back patio there was a rose garden of about 20 plants, mostly unlabeled hybrid teas, including a Peace and a Snowfire, both less that 30 high with spindly little canes. There were also two large rambling plants with pale foliage and cerise-pink blooms with wrinkled petals in the spring. Our next-door neighbor told us the gardener called them rugosa roses. On line and in rose books I ve found similar but not identical pictures of R. rugosa at least the foliage looks right. I cut bouquets for the table, replaced a few hybrid teas defeated by Denver s erratic winters, fertilized when I thought of it, but didn t do much more. JANUARY,

11 Our next stop was Belleview, Washington, outside of Seattle where we bought a new home on a steep hillside. The builder had landscaped the front yard to get a sale, investing in a few nice plants, a weeping cherry, a beautiful deodora cedar, and a few rhododendrons, and then filling the remaining space with Douglas fir trees. Thankfully most of the firs died before we closed on the house, but two remained alive in the 6 wide strip between the driveway and the uphill property line. Douglas firs grow like weeds there, reaching feet tall and 25 feet wide under cultivation and larger in the wild; realizing they would soon cover the driveway, we pulled them out to replant in a corner of the backyard. Our uphill neighbor arrived to supervise (the firs threatened her view of Mt. Baker) and then asked what we meant to plant there instead. When I said roses, she gave me hug, offered her teen-age daughters as babysitters, and then took me on a tour of Seattle s public rose gardens. Early the next spring we planted hybrid teas and grandifloras in the rain, fitting about 18 into the space, including Peace, of course, and a stunning pink rose I had discovered in another neighbor s yard, Dainty Bess. In the rest of the yard we planted fruit trees, azaleas, rhododendrons, and spring bulbs, which were equally interesting to us at the time. Three years later another job transfer brought us to Phoenix, so we began again in another totally different climate. Next month: The Thorny Path Continues Through Arcadia Reprinted, with permission, from Mary Van Vlack and the PRS newsletter. THANK YOU MARY!! And we look forward to your upcoming articles JANUARY,

12 ROSE CARE CORNER for February, 2015 by Phyllis Henslin, Master Consulting Rosarian Spring pruning: Try to finish your spring pruning by the end of February. After you finish pruning your roses and have all the leaves stripped, clean up all the cut canes and leaves and throw them away. Do not leave the cuttings and old leaves for mulch as they can contain disease spores and insects. Also do not put them in your compost pile. Spraying: Spray the soil with an insecticide to kill any insects that are wintering below the soil surface. Spray the canes with a fungicide to help prevent mildew. These preventive measures will help save you work and frustration later on. Fertilizer: Apply an organic fertilizer such as Gro Ganic (which our society sells, just call Mike Jepsen to order it) around your bushes. Milorganite is another organic fertilizer that is available at Home Depot. Apply 2 cups of organic fertilizer and ½ cup of Alfalfa Meal to each large established rose bush. For roses in pots, use ½ the rate for each potted rose. ¼ cup of Epson salts can be applied to each large bush and ½ rate for potted roses to help promote new basal breaks. New basal breaks help to keep your bushes young and healthy with those nice new green canes. Remember: Always water before and after applying fertilizer to your bushes. Irrigation & mulch: Now is the time to make sure your irrigation system and emitters are working properly and make necessary repairs. Lack of water is one quick way to kill a rose bush. As the temperatures start to increase, adjust your watering schedule accordingly. Add a thick layer of new mulch to your rose beds now before they start putting out new growth so you don t risk breaking off new growth on your bushes. Mulching your roses beds helps keep the soil cooler in the summer months, conserves water and helps prevent weeds from growing. Planting: Bare root roses can still be planted in February. Be sure and immerse them in water for 24 hours before planting to hydrate them. If your bare root roses are slow in putting out new growth, cover them with wet mulch and put a brown paper bag around the bush to hold the mulch in place. Keep the mulch moist and once you have new growth, wash the mulch away from the bush with a gentle spray of water. Our annual rose auction will be held on February 7, 2015 in the White Tent. The tent is near the East parking lot. You can preview the roses at noon and the bidding starts at 1:30 pm. A list of roses available and photos can be found on the MEVRS website. The rose auction always provides lots of fun and rival bidding. Tea and refreshments will be served. Secret -- One of the roses in the auction JANUARY,
