3 ROSE CARE CORNER for April, 2015 by Phyllis Henslin, Master Consulting Rosarian April is the month of beautiful roses. Our rose gardens are in full bloom and there are several rose shows in the area where you can either enter your roses in a show or just go and look at all the award winning roses. You may find some that you will want to add to your garden next fall. Now is the time to grab your camera and take pictures of your garden and individual roses. Those pictures will help you to remember the good performers and the bad ones you may want to replace. Remember: Glendale Rose Show April 4 th and Phoenix Rose Show April 18 th. I encourage you to cut some blooms and enter them in these Rose Shows. See you there!! You want your roses to remain fresh for as long as possible as you pick them. When you cut a stem from a bush, an air bubble will immediately lodge in the stem and will not allow it to take up water. Take a bucket of clean water with you as you cut your blooms and submerge each cut stem in the water, Then make a new cut under the water before you put them in a vase. Now the stem will be able to take up water and the bloom will last longer. Springtime also brings infestations of thrips and aphids that cause buds to not open properly and brown edges to appear on the petals. Aphids are green and cluster on the bud and also on the stem just below the bud. Thrips are tiny insects within the bud, difficult to see, and damage the blooms from within. Using your water wand to blast off the aphids with a strong blast of water will generally keep them under control. To control thrips and a severe infestation of aphids you can spritz the buds with Bayer Advanced Rose & Flower Insect Killer. Spider Mites may also start to appear on your roses. They love hot dry weather. They are very tiny difficult to see insects that will collect by the hundreds on the underside of the rose leaves. Spider mites suck juice from the leaves, create webs on the underside of the leaves and leave them rusty looking. They start on the lower part of the bush and work their way up. The easiest way to control spider mites is with a strong blast of water from your water wand every 3 to 4 days (both the underside and top of the leaves). A water wand is a gardener s best friend. Fertilizer: Your roses are growing and putting out those beautiful blooms so they need to be fed. There are several fertilizers you can use, it s your choice. Arizona Best Citrus Food is an economical granular fertilizer to use or if you prefer a water soluble fertilizer, use Magnum Grow or Miracle Gro. Adding 1 TBS. of fish emulsion to 1 gallon of water and applying it to your roses will add size and color to the blooms. Water: Temperatures are on the rise so adjust your watering schedule. Remember: Without sufficient water, roses will not survive. WATER, WATER, Roses love & need water! Thought for the month: Give a rose to a friend or neighbor; it will make you both feel good APRIL,

7 A Thank you volunteer breakfast was held in the Rose Garden on Saturday March 7 th. Approximately 40 volunteers attended and enjoyed breakfast and a social morning in the garden. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the end of rose pruning and the spreading of mulch in the rose beds. Without our dedicated volunteers, there would be no Rose Garden, so the next time you see a volunteer working in the garden, please stop and thank them. Several areas had roses starting to bloom and the flowering trees in the Rose Garden were magnificent. Several volunteers were awarded pins for their many years of service in the Rose Garden. They were: 5 year pins Judy Paskell and Lois Downin 10 year pin Mary Lum 15 year pins Lynn Twitchell and Phyllis Henslin The volunteer breakfast ended with a drawing of raffle numbers for gifts for all and each volunteer took home a miniature rose to plant in their rose garden. Lots of goodies on the raffle table for everyone to chose from Judy Paskell receiving her 5 year pin and APRIL,
