ROSE CARE CORNER for February, 2014 by Phyllis Henslin, Consulting Rosarian February Rose Care Spring Pruning: Try to finish your spring pruning by the middle of the month. After you finish pruning your roses and have all the leaves stripped, clean up all the canes and leaves and throw them away. Do not leave the cuttings and old leaves for mulch as they can contain disease spores and insects. Spraying: Spray the soil with an insecticide to kill any insects that are wintering below the soil surface. Spray the canes with a fungicide to help prevent mildew. These preventive measures will help save you work and frustration later on. Fertilizer: Apply an organic fertilizer such as Gro Ganic (which our society sells call Mike Jepsen) around your bushes. Milorganite is another organic fertilizer that is available at Home Depot or Lowes. Apply 2 cups of organic fertilizer and 1 cup of Alfalfa Meal to each large established bush. For roses in pots, use ½ the rate for each potted rose. ¼ cup Epson Salts can be applied this month to each large bush and ½ rate for potted roses to help promote new basal breaks. Remember: Always water before and after applying fertilizer to your bushes. Irrigation & mulch: Now is the time to make sure your irrigation system and emitters are working properly and make necessary repairs. As the temperatures start to increase, adjust your watering schedule accordingly. Adding a thick layer of new mulch to your rose beds is much easier now before they start putting out new growth and you have the chance of breaking the new growth off. Mulching your roses beds, keeps the ground cooler in the summer heat and helps prevent weeds from growing. Mulch from Ken Singh Farms will be for sale at the Rose Garden during February. All money from the sale of the mulch helps maintain the Rose Garden. Planting: Bare root roses can still be planted in February. Be sure and immerse them in water for 24 hours before planting to hydrate them. If you have bare root roses that are slow in leafing out, cover them with wet mulch and put a brown paper bag around the mulch to hold it in place. This process should help the buds immerse. Once they are growing nicely, gently wash the mulch away. If you still need roses to plant in your garden, check our local nurseries as they have a nice supply to choose from. Thought for the month: The best thing about gardening is that if you put it off long enough it won t be necessary. Dainty Bess February,

By Phyllis Henslin The Rose Garden has been alive with volunteers working diligently pruning all the rose beds in the anticipation of seeing the Rose Garden in full bloom again in late March, April and May. Thanks to a month of warm, sunny days, we have nearly 90% of the garden pruned. This is a First in many years!!! Great job everyone. On Saturday Feb. 1 st Boy Scout Troop 451, came and helped wheel barrow mulch to rose beds in Section 3, Section 4 and way to the west end of the campus to the Yellow Bus Stop bed. The four and a half tons of mulch was moved and spread in record time, 3 ½ hours. A big Thank You to Troop 451. and to Jimmy Tribby who enlisted the help of the Boy Scouts.. Jimmy and the boys spreading the mulch Note the size of that wheel barrow Shirley Loverin helping unload the mulch. Thanks to Helen Baird for being in charge of the mulch spreading at the Yellow Bus Stop February,

Have mulch, will travel!! Time out for cookies, donuts, water and also little fun Pruning in Section 2 Pruning in Section 4 New yellow roses being planted in the Peace bed in Section 4 February,

With our warm sunny January days, the roses are putting out new growth in rec- This rose bed is in Section 3 and now has all red roses Only in the ground 2 weeks, and the new roses Jackie was kept very busy hauling away the rose cuttings February,

IN THE GARDEN During the Holidays, the Rose Garden was beautiful and enjoyed by many visitors. The fact is with the mild winter there were so many beautiful roses it took real determination to prune them. Saturday, January 4, 2014, was the beginning of the annual winter pruning. The volunteer attendance each week has been amazing, because of the excellent turnout of volunteers each week, 90% of the pruning is complete. Congratulations to each and every volunteer for persistently working to complete the winter pruning. Pruning of the Garden is far ahead of where we usually would be. With that said, a big Rosy Thanks to all the Dead Header regulars, new volunteers who have come for the first time and to all of the ARS MEVRS Consulting Rosarians that shared their knowledge and demonstrated and lead pruning groups Rose plantings have included old and new varieties; in fact over three hundred fifty roses have been planted in beds thought the garden. Section D the east Peace Bed has all new roses; we think you will find the new plantings of Sunsprite, Sun Bright and Rotary Rose as the peace symbol interesting. The planted roses were donated by our friends growing roses and supplying roses to nurseries nationally. In the west valley, Tyler Francis and Leyton Wolfe and others from various states include Weeks Roses, Star Roses, David Austin Roses. The ARS Award of Excellence (AOE) test garden has new Miniature Roses and new Mini-Flora Roses planted for evaluation over the next two years. The garden is one of nine ARS-AOE Test Gardens nationally. This is the first year for the new test garden for the new ARS rose testing program named, American Rose Garden Selections (ARGS). Most of the test roses for ARGS have been planted; a few have not been shipped because of the weather in the east. David Austin Roses also sent some roses for testing. In a few months we will be watching them and evaluating them for performance. AOE and ARGS test roses are planted in beds B and C. Those interested in watching them can contact Marylou or LeRoy. They would be pleased to show you the rose test areas. Rose Garden Tours open to the public will begin March 15 and continue into May on designated Saturdays and Sundays. When the dates are set they will be posted on the MEVRS web page And the Rose Garden Web page, Rose Tours are an excellent relaxing opportunity to learn and gain the inside knowledge of the garden and to just take time to Stop and Smell the Roses with family and friends. Marylou Coffman LeRoy Brady February,
